The Canadian American.
In 2007, a band of dedicated Rye enthusiasts bought a farm in Vermont lovingly named Whistle Pig Farm. They teamed up with master distiller Dave Pickerell, formerly of Maker’s Mark, to bring genuine Rye Whiskey back to the forefront of American Whiskeys. What they do is outsource elements of their production to Canadian distillers, using grain produced by others. Their ultimate vision is to make Whistle Pig an “estate producer,” which means that all aspects of Whiskey production will be onsite, from growing the grain to bottling the spirit. But until then, this is the best choice of a Rye Whiskey hailing from Canada, and we can’t dispute that!
The first thing that you need to know is that Whistle Pig 10 Year Old is more than a regular straight Rye Whiskey. And by “more” we mean more Rye, more flavor, more spice, and more quality. You see, WhistlePig 10 Year Old is made 100% from Rye grain. Rye is the most temperamental of grains to distill, and the vast majority of Rye Whiskey on the market is actually a blend of at least 51% Rye, the rest being corn, barley, wheat, or whatever else might be laying around. This makes a BIG difference.
Another big difference is that all of this Rye is aged for at least 10 years. Again, most of the Rye out there is aged two or three years. And all of that aging is in a combination of first-fill ex Bourbon casks and new charred American oak casks, then bottled at a whopping 50% ABV. In fact, don’t say that you have tasted Rye Whiskey until you have tasted WhistlePig 10 Year Old neat OR in your favorite cocktail.
SmartAss Corner:
What the heck is a “whistle pig” anyway? Even though the label for Whistle Pig Rye is adorned with the sketch of a tuxedo clad hog, “whistle pig”, groundhog and woodchuck all refer to the same animal.

Ratings & Reviews
Robin,
Very smooth
Curtis,
Very smooth would get this again
Wade,
What can I say, love Whistlepig.
Gregory,
Like like Rye but this one is beyond my rye level.
Benjamin,
A good sipping Rye. Bought a bottle
For my father-In-law, he loves it.
Erik,
The worst bottle I have gotten. It is still sitting in the cabinet.
Stephen,
In my openion the Pig missed its mark on this one.
Jeffrey,
Good on the rocks. Probably just as good a rye as I have ever had. A little steep in price though.
Brian,
Love the butterscotch aftertaste
mike,
Light on the initial. Then a bit carmely, the finish has a long tail with a spice profile. Very smooth, no need to be cut, drink it neat. Solid
Matthew,
Very rye forward, but very smooth. I'm typically a bourbon drinker, but this Rye has become my new go-to. You can absolutely taste the difference between this and cheaper ryes.
Incidentally, I recently learned that a Whistlepig is one of the many names for the guinea pig.
Sophia,
I've been trying to expand my beverage tastebuds from scotches to ryes. I've been hearing murmurs lately about WhistlePig and thought this would be a good time to try it out. Enjoyed the sips, but didn't find it as bold in flavor as I expected.
Caressa,
Pretty decent for the price
Michael,
Decent, good for something different, not as much my thing but for those liking rye I'm guessing it'll rate higher
Mike,
I am just not a rye guy but, even if I were, I am sure there are better ones out there.
Rebecca,
Ordered it because the name made me laugh. Will order again because it's among the best whiskies I've tasted. My husband and I both love it!
Steven,
Smells like, cinnamon and nail polish remover
taste like oily leather and pipe tobacco ... like sipping through grandpa's catchers mitt
I'm hoping its just the neck pour. Ice ain't cutting the horse harness-like leather flavor though
Wayne,
Loved it
Jerry,
Good but nothing to brag about
Gregory,
Smooth taste especially for a rye whiskey, with just the right spice
Eric,
Amazing loved it!
Doug,
Good rye. Didn’t last long in my bar.
Paul,
I liked WhistlePig. I thought it was very smooth. I think this is a 5 star whiskey
Carlos,
I like rye bourbon and this for me worked perfectly.
John,
Not a big Rye person and it seems a lot sweeter than an Irish Rye I have. Ok for an occasional change from Scotch.
Maurice,
Amazing!
Jeffrey,
Personally I'm not a big fan of rye bourbon. It has a lot of spice to me and not very smooth when it hits the back of your throat.
David,
I expected a straight rye to be in blended
Paul,
Not a big whistle pig fan, but sips well
Jeff,
Tobacco/leather at first and then cherry and smooth finish
Max,
Good rye. Strong taste of apple (which I enjoyed). However, there are comparable tasting ryes at lower prices.
Andy,
Me and my wife did not enjoy this 10 year Whistle Pig Rye. As the current flavor spiral suggests, we got plenty of mint and rye on the palate. Just too dry for my tastes. Disliked it both neat and in a Manhattan. Bulleit Rye or Rittenhouse Rye gets the job done for us.
Bryan,
Enjoyed this Rye a lot but no more than the regular Piggyback Rye. The latter being one of the best bangs for your buck IMHO.
Martin,
nice and spicy with interesting fruit and nut notes
Beth,
When I got this in my welcome package I decided that this was going to be put until my 1st granddaughter was born (about 6 weeks at the time) well she decided to come early and we just got to open it and the bottle is already gone. It was delicious. Absolutely no complaints it was delicious can't wait to buy another bottle wish they had a bigger bottle
John,
Delightful, even for those new to rye appreciation
Tina,
One of my absolute favorites! Just the right amount of spice and goes down smooth.
Jeff,
It was OK, but I am mostly a fan of simple american sour mash whiskey and some bourbons. It seems that all of the tasting choices provided to me by Flaviar involve rye and single malts / scotch, which I simply do not like.
Tammy,
We absolutely loved it! One of the smoothest I’ve ever tasted! We would buy it again, for sure!
Anthony,
Was not a fan. Did not enjoy it at all.
Jeffrey,
Nice
Matt,
Outstanding flavor
Matt,
Outstanding flavor and robust taste.
IBrahn,
Amazing taste and smooth the whole way down. The price is a little up there but well worth every penny.
Andrew,
A very enjoyable stiff drink. My wife and I both took a sip and decided this was pretty darn good. At 100 proof the flavor is less intense than one would expect. In a whiskey coke the coke flavor over powers it unlike things like Woodford Reserve. We really like it but some may find it a bit on the mild side.
Thomas,
Hands down amazing. Best Rye whiskey I've had in a long time. Definitely pricey. Keep the cork as long as you can and savor what you have.
Patrick,
I've typically like the Whistle Pig selections I've had in the past but this 10 year missed the mark for me. No bite and sweet tasting.
Casey,
Great flavors with a really good finish!!
Wayne,
Excellent, would highly recommend.
Jason,
Very clean, smooth sip. The mint comes on as a pleasant, subtle surprise before giving way to a smoky finish.
Stephen,
Good smooth whiskey
Blake,
Good stuff!! Love it:)
Jerry,
Smooth, complex, just the right bite
Ted,
Nice and smooth with a bit of spice. It goes well with a pipe or a cigar on a chilly night, by the fire.
Jim,
Disapointed
Carl,
It’s good, but not worth how expensive it is. If you ever get a chance, willet’s ryes are super good.
Joseph,
I had seen this in stores and thought how could a rye this expensive be worth it. Well, I got the 375ml for my bottle with my membership and wow...I am blown away. This bottle is incredible. I just tried it in an old fashioned (hard as it was to use something so expensive and tasty in a cocktail, even one as expressive as an old fashioned) and I wish I hadn't--I didn't need to know old fashioneds could be this good!
For me, the only obstacle is price. This is hands down the best rye I've ever had, but it is expensive. Definitely a must try, though.
Kenneth,
Love this one!
Bradley,
I thought it was a very good rye whiskey! I enjoyed the whole bottle and would not hesitate buying it again.
Praveen,
Over-rated. Caramel and vanilla taste with slight astringent spice finish leaving me wanting a more complex draught.
Scott,
Love this rye!! Nice spice with a slightly sweet finish
Dylan,
Meh. I love WhistlePig's higher end offerings but tried this as their line has gotten more expensive. This bottling is fine but not worth the money when there are other great ryes at $40 for a 750ml.
Charley,
Good solid rye
William,
Definitely leads with the spice. Would prefer a bit more barrel but it is subtle and lingers
Arthur,
This was a quality Wiskey. A good sipper on the rocks.
Oscar,
Good taste, smooth finish but a little bland. Overall great choice for those occasions.
James,
Great drink. Got this as my first shipment and makes me happy I joined
Nicholas,
I am not a rye bourbon fan.
Michelle,
Love a great rye. Enjoyed sipping this one.
Blake,
Very smooth
Brian,
This bourbon, for the price point, was a challenge. I wanted to like it. but i enjoy a sweeter bourbon and this bourbon seemed a bit flat with a flavor profile that bland. I had to search for the flavors too much. There is some pear in it that is kind of nice in the after taste but beyond that, its a bit boring for the money. I'll always say that my favorite bourbon is either the one i'm drinking or the bourbon that is free. In this case, it was both. So i can't kick it out of bed for farting on my leg. But... I wouldn't go out of my way to buy it.
Ian,
I get a lot of spice, rye, oak, and sweetness. Fairly good rye. I’d recommend.
Joshua,
Spicy neat but settles with some water. Butterscotch notes. Sips nicely with a little water.
Joshua,
Quite smooth, little bite on the finish but very good.
Lyshemah,
Defiantly a kick of spice. I’m more of a sweeter whisky fan but I would sip on this for a while.
Sergio,
Spicy but nice. With a bit of water it becomes very smooth and a lot of flavors come out.
Daniel,
Spicy and warm!
John,
Not a fan drinking it neat but it made a tasty Manhattan!
Adam,
This rye is exceptional. The darker, caramel tones are smooth and gives a nice warmth as you drink it.
Bryan,
100 proof.
Brian,
About as good as a rye gets imo
Eugene,
It was great! I will be ordering this one again!
Eddie,
Sorry, it confirmed that I do not like Rye whiskeys or Bourbons.
Fernando,
Very good!
Anthony,
I was not disappointed by the whistle pig name. As a rye I was immediately introduced to all the spices, along with that much needed bite. Perfect for old fashioned and whiskey sours. Really any spirit forward cocktails.
Willard,
Great rye whiskey! Will definitely but again.
Paul,
Surprisingly good. I actually preferred the 10 year old over the 6 and 18 year old versions. A great bargain! I can't wait to try the 12 & 15.
Ryan,
Tasty, though I’m not sure it’s worth the price
Courtland,
Great tasting whiskey.
Brett,
Really good. Super smooth
Nicholas,
Great for mixing since it’s bitter, but it’s actually quite strong and if you’re into that kind of thing then this is your whisky. I drank it on the rocks and mixed with other things and both times it was great.
Robert,
Not bad! This was my first Rye Whiskey. I wasn't sure what to think beforehand but have come to enjoy the smooth taste and unique (for me) flavor compared to traditional corm whiskeys.
Clifford,
This was my first test box. I liked the flavors in this rye, will be getting a bottle for my bar.
Stephen,
Smooth and enjoyable. It's a small bottle, which makes it a little on the pricy side. However, a nice sample. Definitely willing to purchase again.
BILLY,
THE SINGLE MALT SCOTCH TASTES WERE EASIER TO FIND A SPECIFIC TASTE WITH THE GUIDES.....VERY HELPFUL. A REAL PLEASURE , VERY WELL PACKAGED AND PRESENTED. LOOKING FORWARD TO MY NEXT ORDER AND MORE NEW TASTE / FLAVOR.
BILLY,
JUST PURE ENJOYMENT , MY TASTE BUDS ARE NOT REFINED ENOUGH TO IDENTIFY A SPECIFIC FLAVOR BUT I SAVORED EVERY SIP.
JOE,
Exceptional fine tasting Rye. Smooth with a little spice. Pleasing to the nose and a fine lingering after taste. This is a new favorite in my home bar.
Brandon,
This was my first Rye. Had a little more spice than I’m used to but it was smooth going down. I’m excited to try it as a mix now that I’ve had it clean.
Holly,
Nice smooth rye, doesn’t need anything else added
Keith,
Nice complex flavors offering a more distinctive taste but a bit harsh of a bite to it. I'd order it again.
Chris,
Caramel, clove, pepper and a bit of hay on the nose. A nice spicy bite that mellows surprisingly soon to a charred marshmallow and cinnamon
Teeratorn,
Smooth but a little bit too sweet
miguel,
Has a nice bite to it..if you dont like that you wont like this! But i think its perfect
Victor,
It was smooth with a little bite at the end but all round a good bottle
Christopher,
I like everything from Whistle Pig. It was a treat to have this one.
John,
I am not a fan of bourbon or rye whiskey.
luke,
Did u taste this one?
Emile,
A lovely rye. Character and finish of the best bourbons with the distinct rye taste permeating throughout. Should be the gold standard by which all other ryes are judged.
Caleb,
pronounced rye taste,smooth finish
Joe,
Wow!! This Rye has an exceptional taste up front with a very smooth finish. Definitely one for the bar.
Antonio,
New to ryes, this was good
Antonio,
This was perfect with a swift warm after taste
Jeff,
It’s okay but nothing great about it. I got it in a tasting box and probably wouldn’t buy again. Little harsher than most I like for sipping
John,
Really smooth. Spicy with a sweet finish.
Michael,
New to ryes. I liked this alot.
Adam,
Sweet taste with a strong bite
Allegra,
I like some ryes, but this is one I won't be ordering again. I can't even find a mixed drink that it works in.
Jeremy,
Very smooth
Tammy,
Loved It. It was smooth finish.
Chris,
New favorite!
Jim,
Not a Rye fan, but found this to be smooth and robust.
Jocelyn,
Wow
Bill,
I always wanted to try this and was price shy...what a mistake...amazing taste!
Eric,
not a Rye fan
Dino,
Great sipper. But even better with a mixer. This I will buy again
Austin,
I enjoyed the sweetness when pared with ginger ale. On its own I found it smooth and fragrant.
Charles,
Nice smooth sweet caramel taste will be a main stay in my cabinet
Travis,
There is a final taste in here I can’t pinpoint but wow what a great rye. A new Canadian rye favorite.
Mr.,
Loved the price....it’s very smooth for a low cost whiskey. No after taste. Mixes well. Wife even likes it!
Christian,
I’m not sure what to think of this one. After researching it, reding the reviews, and then tasting it, it wasn’t what I had expected. The way it hit my palate it struck me as average.
Mike,
For a 10 year rye, it exceeded my expectations. Great quality for the price.
Marshall,
On my third one, nough said!!!!!!!
andrew,
Not that flavorful. Just kinda bland
Tony,
Tasty rye, little bit spicy and complex
Jonah,
Not a big rye drinker but this was a nice way to be introduced.
Sonia,
Very robust flavor. Love the tones.
Joe,
The Rye flavor in this 10yr old is subtle. The overall flavor of this Rye whiskey was very tasty, smooth on the finish, and hints of spices.
Noah,
I really liked the full rye flavor
Michael,
Being semi new to the finer whiskeys out there, I guess I need to sample more ryes. I did not like this one.
Matt,
Pretty high rye flavor up front and definitely spicy. Interesting finish I didn’t love. A little underwhelmed but overall a tasty rye.
Scott,
I do not like rye,but that was the only choice I was given for my last quarterly club order. Is there a way I can make sure rye is not one of my choices anymore?
Billy,
This is a very nice, flavorful whisky. Unfortunately, it's high ABV works against it since I don't find it to be particularly smooth and it's harshness cuts against it's great flavor. While I have enjoyed drinking it, I don't think I'll be ordering it again, especially at it's price point.
Gary,
Not to my taste. Sorry I ordered it when there are so many better choices.
James,
Liked it.
Jonathan,
I enjoy this. Good spice at first but then smooth as you keep drinking. Very nice.
Tylor,
Ok
Chuck,
I enjoyed it, no smoke taste, best when 62 Degrees.
Joshua,
I liked it.
Robert,
It was OK. Not as smooth as I was expecting after hearing so much about it. I never put water or ice in my rye. With WhistlePig I found myself wanting to.
Adam,
Strong spice at first sip. Since I’m not a big spice guy, that taste invades and overtakes any subsequent flavor. Not bad, probably better as a mixer (am drinking it on ice).
Kevin,
This is a delicious rye. What great spicy flavor. I first tried it neat, and was pleasantly surprised by the spiciness. I then made a Manhattan, which is how I usually drink rye, but it subdued the unique taste. Drink it neat!
I thought the price was a great bargain until the little bottle showed up. 375ml? I guess it’s my fault for not noticing that. Fool me once.
Andrew,
Excellent full flavor. Perfect on some ice to sip after a long day.
Christopher,
Spicy and full of flavors. Two fingers and a rock make for a great glass of whiskey in the evenings.
Michael,
Smells very nice, but Powerful spices which are a tad to much for me.
Wade,
It’s a solid rye option if that’s your flavor. You can practically chew on it. Lots of flavor.
Richard,
Too much rye for me. Falviar didn't give me a choice so I had to pick it. I've had it before and would never buy it for myself.
Mason,
Extremely spicy. Opens up and becomes quite sweet with a bit of water. Overall a very nice though surprisingly complex makeup.
Warren,
Nice flavors on this one
Bryan,
It was very fine and smooth.
Michael,
Smooth, nice tasting rye with a calm, sweet finish.
David,
A good rye but not worth the cost for me. There are better rye's at a much better price point!
Laura,
A little sweet start, then a smooth finish.
Chris,
Super smooth and mellow bourbon.
Valerie,
I loved this. Never had it before. Very smooth. Great for sipping straight.
Kevin,
Nose vanilla first with oak and smoke. Flavor spice vanilla heat with oak and honey.
Emily,
Smooth, good flavor, caramel notes
Scott,
Not on the level of Maker's Mark, but a damn fine whiskey.
Allen,
Fantastic. Strong, but great for sipping. Very smooth and long, enjoyable finish.
JOHN,
absolutely a delicious tasting rye
Gary,
15 year Whistlepig is awesome. My 2 sons and I are huge fans. From start to finish a perfect 10.
Michael,
Taste was good but the price is outrageous. A half size bottle at a full size price. I can get a full size bourbon at the same price.
David,
Bordered on the less than smooth side and not very subtle
Chris,
Loved it. Drank it straight and made a Manhattan with it.
Egan,
Absolutely delicious! Spicy in the most pleasant way possible and balanced with sweetness and velvety smoothness.
Corey,
Spicy, but smooth.
Peter,
Whistle Pig is like a good friend sitting on your tongue
Francis,
- Very bold/Full flavor without being overwhelming.
- Sweet candy/fruit smell.
- well rounded burn (not harsh hit but more smooth rounded).
Andrew,
Spicy, lasts on the finish. Citrus notes on the second sniff.
GREGG,
One of my favorites, some spice with a smooth long complex finish.
Jonathan,
Smooth with a little spice. Very nice
Douglas,
I am not a rye drinker but found this smooth and had a good finish
Mark,
A smooth Rye, without that over powering Rye flavor. A definite try if you are not into Rye whiskey. Great in cocktails too
Mark,
My favorite but might be because of sentimental value
John,
Very nice taste and after taste. I never had it before and appears to be a new favorite as I ordered another
Adrian,
Smooth, spice, and ‘twas very, very nice. I’d pick up this bottle.
Brian,
Was a strong proof whiskey that didn’t let up from start to finish.
JOE,
A very smooth rye. I enjoyed it.
Isaac,
Amazing. Absolutely loved this
Nathan,
Just Okay- a little to sharp for me but other people that I was testing with seemed to like it.
Chris,
Sharp rye after taste. Overall smooth.
William,
Absolutely phenomenal. Best rye I’ve ever had. Insanely smooth over ice.
Monica,
I love the smooth finish. The amazing taste and flavor.
Eric,
7 out of 10, but a high 7. Smoother than expected.
Charles,
I did like this particular spirit. The honey notes were unmistakable, but not overpowering. This was my first rye. I typically enjoy bourbon. This was smooth.
Melissa,
enjoyable for sipping
Melissa,
enjoyable
William,
It was the worst tasting Rye that I have ever tried. Also way to expensive.
Bryan,
7.8, Not the biggest fan of rye, only tried a couple, but this was the best so far, smooth with a spicy finish, I could easily drink it again.
Ray,
Lots of ethanol in the nose, overpowering even; smooth, caramel palate; finishes with pleasing warmth
Brent,
Perfectly spicy with light notes of honey and brown sugar.
Nate,
A very enjoyable libation
Brian,
New to rye. Very good
Stephen,
almost as good as Bourbon. thumbs up.
Ronald,
One well rounded rye.
I have been impressed with the flavor profiles they come up with. I shall have to keep an eye on their offerings.
Jared,
Candy cherry sweet to me. Lingers with flavor of almost a cherry liquor. Not for me.
Craig,
A little harsh and bold. Strong Rye.
NATHAN,
Bold and very different. A little harsh for my taste, but I generally prefer my rye to be very close to bourbon
Ryan,
Awesome! Exceeded the hype.
David,
I"m new at tasting but really enjoyed the WhistlePig Rye. I enjoyed the finish (or after taste) very much. I truly enjoy bourbon but look forward to tasting more out side of my comfort zone.
Ashley,
Husband loves this, it is his new favorite
Ray,
I absolutely LOVE this rye. Not overly complex, beautiful nose and great rye flavor with a very long finish with new flavors just popping in over time. Fantastic.
michael,
it was my first experience with rye whiskey, i liked it, just thought it would be smoother since it was 10 year.
Cameron,
Who really cares about the back story of of WhistlePig... this is a damn good rye. One of my favorites for under $100.
Alan,
This was nice. It had a strong but pleasant flavor. A bit more of a bite than expected but very good. The only problem was that the bottle was finished to quick. I need another.
Brendon,
Very good semismooth will definitely buy more but was expecting it to be just a little bit smoother
Jeremy,
I don't have a huge amount of experience with different whiskys but I do really like ryes; and I really like this rye. In a cup with a little ice and it's good to go. Has the rye spice without being overwhelming.
Ryan,
My first Rye; a little sweet for me, but I'm a fan. Much more complex than I was expecting.
Joshua,
I really enjoyed this and I'm not usually a big rye drinker. It has the nice spice of a rye but didn't feel like an assault on my mouth the way a rye's spice sometimes can. It's much smoother, subtle, and sweet.
jose,
didn't like it at all had about 3 glasses and it got better by the third glass but then i felt it the next morning and thats usually a sign of a bad whiskey in my opinion.. this does not happen to me when i drink my other whiskeys and certainly not after just 3 glasses. the first glass i had it neat just so i can taste all the ingredients the 2nd and 3rd i had it with an ice sphere and it did open up the whiskey and became smoother but its safe to say i am not a fan and will never be trying this again.
Ernesto,
I am definitely not an expert but I really enjoyed this whiskey. Easy to drink and was quite nice
Chris,
First bottle to try. I enjoyed my first taste. Felt fairly smooth. Enjoyed the aftertaste.
WESLEY,
Excellent - a surprise in a bottle. Go with the 375ml if you are intrigued. Mint, honey, floral notes on the nose. Cinnamon, spice, citrus fruits on the pallet. Finish with more mint, pepper, and citrus notes. Wonderfully complex.
Roland,
Almost banana in the nose after swirling to calm the initial alcohol burn. Definitely detect the vanilla and the rich butterscotch on the end. Nice subtle heat and spice. I can see why the spiral has mint; that herbal note is there. Enjoyed it and look forward to further tasting. I just tried it neat this first time.
Ivan,
Has a nice spicy burn when taken neat
Tim,
Drinkable for the strength, mid-body, rye spice.
Max,
Good. Smooth at first with slight more burn as it progresses.
Alan,
Dad- Not as good as Breckinridge but still excellent
Daniel-Smooth at the beginning and first swallow. Gets a little more burn as it goes down
John,
I hated it.
william,
not as good as the Angel
Brian,
Smooth and sharp. Goes great with a dark blend cigar.
Bill,
This whiskey should never be degraded by adding ice or water....just sipped a tiny shot of it and it exploded my senses. Very nice.
Andrew,
I’m not well versed in the Rye game yet, but I really liked it. A good spice and a deep butterscotch to it. A little syrupy but in a good way.
Robert,
Reminds me of the old Irish Ballad "Rye Whiskey - Rye Whiskey, Rye Whiskey I cry. If I can't have rye whiskey I surely would die. Ditty goes on about a duck swimming to the bottom of the ocean for more rye whiskey.
Chris,
This is my first Rye. I was not expecting what hit me. Totally different than Bourbon! Not a hard bite and the flavor was on point. I'll def buy this again.
Andrew,
I enjoyed this rye whiskey on the rocks. Once the ice started to melt the drink got to be really smooth.
Jessica,
Definitely a solid Rye whiskey. Was very promising on the nose and I was very excited, but on the follow through it left me with much to be desired. There was just nothing that stepped up to the plate to differentiate itself with something special that I guess I was hoping for considering the price and the reputation.
Joshua,
Good
Amanda,
Not a bad front end flavor, but wasn’t a fan of the back end flavor.
Courtney,
Definitely not my cup of tea, or should I say whiskey/bourbon etc. I even tried it again after being less than sober and had to pour it out
Jeremy,
Best rye I've ever tasted! Smooth with nice clove finish.
Marc,
Ol reliable. Love it had it before. One day I’m goin to Whistle Pig distillery. I’ve had 15 and 18 the piggy back and farm stock. 18 is the best can wait to try a boss hog.
Peter,
Strong and spicy, cherry vanilla nose. Slight hot pepper and creamy vanillin palate strong rye, char. After sitting nice long garden mint finish.
David,
Very smooth for a Rye and for a 100 proof whiskey. My lady and I both enjoyed it.
Joe,
Was more than expected for a rye! Nice surprise.
Stephen,
Smooth and sweet with very little bite.
Riley,
Tried on the rocks & neat, preferred neat you tasted more of the different flavors. Will try again.
Ken,
very smooth. great for sipping
Richard,
Smooth with a slightly lingering aftertaste
William,
Just Ok
Zachary,
Very smooth
Tom,
Really a good rye.
Leslie,
Was really excited to try this one, but ended up not liking at all.
John,
Great, smooth with hidden sweetness
robert,
Great Rye. Fruity and spicy, with some heat. Nice representative of the 100% Ryes.
Kevin,
This tastes like dirt. I am a huge fan of Rye and my go to is Michter's. I've wanted to try Whistlepig for a while because reviews were decent. Not sure if I got a bad bottle or what, but it seems like Whistlepig Rye is made with real hints of pig butthole. Seriously gross.
Gabe,
Thank you Kevin. Your review made my day.
Jim,
Mild nose with spice and a hint of mint. Bold finish with ice adding more pepper taste.
Brandon,
Well balanced and the heat just lingers on the toungue
Zack,
Not a fan.
David,
Very pleasant surprise. Have not been a fan of rye but this was exceptionally smooth
Doug,
I have had older versions of whistlepig and it is apples and oranges
This one is not good... spring for the >10 year ones
Josh,
A very smooth flavor with a strong smokey finish
Todd,
Very good rye. Nice bite on the tongue with a smooth finish.
Russ,
Terrific! As advertised this is an awesome combination of toffee and malt, with just a touch of action at the end.
Brandon,
Very different. Very tasty.
David,
Enjoyed
Tim,
Spicy nose. Hot! (100 proof). Spice and something like pear or apple. Has that sweet, slightly metallic flavor that I find in Irish (triple-distilled) whisky. Bright. Green. Drying, but candy-like finish (contradictory, I know). Not unpleasant, but not as much my thing.
Jan,
Love the smoke but too bitey
Ross,
Strong, initial taste, but turns mellow afterwards. Best served with a splash of water.
Ken,
Stout flavor, I had to let this linger on the tongue to settle, then swallow. Warm all the way down. Flavor lingers on the palette. Nice legs. First try was neat. Next will be on a single ice cube.
Andy,
I had heard about whistlepig and wanted to try it, it was mediocre and the rye did not stand out
Charles,
It's okay. There is a secondary taste that I can't quite identify and don't particularly care for. It is similar to flavors I have tasted in some scotches but it isn't peat. Lingers for a long time.
Lauren,
Good flavor, but weak
Brian,
Strong
Tom,
Subtle vanilla notes up front to sage and spice with a not unpleasant, but very present heat all the way down. Smooth enough straight up, but I'm thinking rocks for this full flavored pig.
John,
Surprisingly complex with layers of spice and botanical flavors and a long even finish. Good enough to skip the mixers and sip with ice... or neat. Of course an Old Fashion or Manhattan with this fine liquor would also make for something special.
Ray,
Simple, but smooth. I didn’t notice the sweet as much as I noticed the spicy, smoky, leathery qualities.
Tim,
Delicious whiskey that is dangerously smooth.
Ryan,
Great mellow taste
Rev.,
Very nice for the price point. Has some but to it with a nice oak undertone. Very nice for lazy sipping.
Wayne,
not a fan
Marshall,
I haven't uncorked it yet. Being by myself and in quarantine, I have had no one to share it with.
My sojourn into scotch has come to a screeching halt.
The three you set me just solidified that I am not a scotch fan.
Can't wait for my next sampling!
Andy,
This is good. Wish it was just a bit more balanced but the Caramel into butterscotch transition is really nice. I would buy again.
Tammy,
Nice and sharp tasting rye whiskey.
Kirk,
Wonderful smooth and easy drinking
Zachary,
Great Rye whiskey with a good bit of spice up front and then a cooling back note of mint. Very easy to drink and smooth throughout.
Michael,
First time trying rye whiskey and I really liked this one. Spiciness is at the forefront that definitely warms you up. Would be a great drink to have with a nice fire going on a cold night. Great aroma and a smooth finish.
Skyler,
Smooth, finished it pretty quick!
Bob,
Very strong but also very smooth going down! Overall we really enjoyed this!
Antonio,
Overrated. I’ve been waiting to try it, but came away disappointed. It taste good on the initial intake, then has a nasty bite. I’m glad I only have the small bottle.
PJ,
Disappointing for the finish and legs for this rye, considering it’s reputation.
Lawrence,
Big, bold flavors! For me, when drinking a Rye Bourbon I expect that first sip to have that spicy warmth on the finish...but after that initial taste... the spicey bite of the rye, mingkes with notes of vanilla, sugary sweet notes like butterscotch dance on the palate, only complementing the smoke and oak. DAMN FINE Bourbon but definitely not for the beginner.
Casey,
Smooth rye best served on the rocks. Would not expect anything less from Whistlepig!
Elizabeth,
My first rye whiskey. Do not care for the taste. Don't have any other ryes to compare it to. I prefer any bourbon to this. There is a distinct after taste that I do not care for as well.
Tracey,
Dangerously smooth
Daniel,
Perfect tones to end the long work week with, good with or without ice depends on the day
Michael,
I am a big fan of the WhistlePig line and love Ryes in general. This was unpleasant to taste, like an ashtray taste to and a cloying finish t back of the tongue, even diluted. Still recommend the Old World 12 yr and the Farmstock. This 10 year is very different.
Luis,
I’m a rookie when it comes to this tasting stuff so take what I say as just an opinion of what I personally like. This was a little too sweet for me. I tasted too much licorice but if you like something a little sweeter you will like this. Just my thoughts
Heather,
This was between a 6 and 7 for me. I love the story of the company and how they are producing their whiskey; I really wanted to like this! But it was just so-so. Not great neat, and not much improved with water or ice. I think it would be better in cocktails? But that's not really my thing.
Javier,
It's earthy taste, which I attribute to it's mint flavor, didn't appeal to me off the back. I appreciated it a little more after sitting with it on a few other occasions and tasted some of the sweeter charred notes. I doubt I'd buy this spirit again though.
Janean,
Mixed emotions about this. Have purchased some various mixers to try with this- a sweet and sour mix. Just haven’t tried it yet, or a few other ideas.
For me, this is a Expensive and for the taste, unless I find a super way to mix, wouldn’t repurchase.
Brad,
Not bad. Not really a neat-type whiskey. Great for a whiskey sour though.
Stephen,
8.1. Solid taste and sits nicely on the tongue. It is exactly what you expect out of a whiskey. Defiantly need to get this again
Mark,
The classic. So good and spicy and energizing. Every time I have some, my first thought is why do I drink anything else? Curiosity is the answer, but I would be happy with this on my bar cart and little else if it came to that.
Fay,
It had a little more bite than I like.
Ben,
Tasty as heck. Easy to drink. More please!
Christopher,
So full of flavor, I couldn’t resist another pour, and then another.
Caron,
From the looks of my empty bottle, I did enjoy this brand of Rye Whiskey. I looked forward to Whiskey Wednesdays when I added a bit of Ginger Beer and Lime seltzer. Just the perfect drink to help me get through the week!
Traci,
One of my favorite ryes.
James,
Very smooth
Don,
Very smooth, and a great aftertaste! Minty, yes!
Jake,
Incredibly smooth from start to finish
Derek,
A bit medicinal for my taste, wouldn’t purchase again
Joseph,
Fairly smooth and pretty flavorful
Brent,
Warm up front that fades into caramel and berries. A holiday in a glass!
William,
I really enjoyed Whistle Pig. very smooth and easy to sip.
Michael,
Very smooth
Don,
Good taste and smooth for a rye.
Tyler,
Cinnamon and vanilla and oak ones on aroma. Initial taste is sweet, but it follows up with some spice from the Rye and slight burn.
MIKE,
I’ve never tried a rye before, caught me by surprise. Not a huge fan but it wasn’t bad, just not my style.
Jordan,
Smooth, not too spicy.
Aaron,
Best rye I've ever tasted.
Kevin,
This was my first bottle from Flaviar. The first sip is spicy but finishes nicely.
Jim,
It had a little kick with first taste but, finished off nicely. I'd buy it again.
Steven,
Very good
Kevin,
I enjoyed this rye a lot. Spicer to me than woodford rye.
Andrew,
Kind expected more body for such a high proof spirit. Smooth and sweet with a hint of spice. Over all a pretty tasty whiskey. Personally, I'm happy to get a half bottle of good stuff over a full bottle of less worthy spirit, but would I buy it again? Probably not. It's a tasty rye but not super special. I think Rittenhouse Rye is a little richer/ more enjoyable for a lot less money.
Rob,
I thought this was pretty good - I just drank it neat. When I ordered it, I didn't realize it was a 375ml bottle. I didn't think it was $80 a bottle good, but not bad.
William,
Excellent Taste. Wonderful color and aroma. Look forward to buying it again!
Kimberly,
Alone was very harsh but mixed wasn't bad.
Michael,
Kind of flat. Almost a pine like aftertaste. Might be a good mixer but not for sipping.
Scott,
This little bottle starts off like the scope of
most in this label. A touch of fire, cinnamon, caramel , oak, peppery, but the finish is light and horrific. The taste dissipates quickly leaving behind a distinct and disturbing chemical taste much like paint thinner aged in pine. Not kidding. I would not venture to try to label this as having a bite at the end. Not even close. I will not buy it again. To be clear though, have had no issues with the rest of the brands offerings as I have enjoyed them immensely
Alanna,
I really don't care for this. It starts out okay, but it's a bit hot and there's some flavor that lingers on the finish and reminds me of astringent. Water helps, but I also hadn't noticed it was a smaller bottle for the price. Pass for me.
Bryan,
Devine flavors.
Norman,
Harsher than anticipated, best serve with an ice cube, good flavor.
James,
I enjoyed it. Makes a very good manhattan.
Douglas,
great rye
Ben,
Flavorful. Easy to drink.
Tyler,
Fantastic rye! You really get that rye flavor pallet, but it doesn’t taste overdone. Excellent.
Christopher,
Enjoyed it very much after some ice opened it up. Nice spice up front.
Colin,
My first try at a rye as I tend to opt for bourbon. I had it neat and was a bit overwhelmed by the spice. Enjoyed the warmth. Can’t wait to try it in a cocktail.
David,
I like the taste
Rian,
I enjoyed this one on the rocks. Spicy up front with a smooth caramel finish.
Richard,
Caramel and honey. Spicy.
Pierre,
Good
Brett,
Not usually a fan of rye; however, this was one of the better ones.
Jeff,
Very peppery. Much prefer the bourbon to this rye version
Anand,
Very smooth and caramel forward. Delicious and still complex
Eduardo,
Neat: Lots of heat and spice up front that immediately gives way to grassy mint, vanilla, and oak. Not for the faint of heart, but a great drink to add some variety to your rotation.
Mixed: A superior mixing rye whose spice cuts through *just* enough without overpowering other flavors. Mixed with Averna, a splash of angostura butters, and a cherry it makes a fantastic black manhattan. Even better with a small spoon of maple syrup and a splash of sherry vinegar over ice.
Overall: If this whisky were a friend, it would be great at parties but a bit in-your-face alone. There is no better rye for cocktails.
Bruce,
Smells like pickle brine. Not a fan.
guest,
Very well said.
Emily,
Not as good as what whistle pig usually puts out there. A solid rye, but not necessarily better than other ryes at similar or lower price points.
Chris,
Very drinkable, a little bit of burn upfront, but it's so smooth afterwards. If you drink with ice, it's all smooth and good.
Jeremiah,
Very nice. Easy to drink slowly and enjoy it.
Samuel,
Very smooth spirit. Big finish of spice/rye along with a little mint/vanilla/honey on the aftertaste.
John,
I'm not a big rye fan because I don't tend to favor the spiciness. That said, this one is still very drinkable.
Eron,
Enjoyable, but a bit alcohol forward for me. Too much burn. Prefer the Knob Creek Straight Rye.
Rae,
Good easy
Michelle,
Very nice.
Brad,
Pretty sure it was this rye that turned me on to rye's a couple years ago, and after circling back I still think it holds up great. It has a pretty unique flavor, one that speaks well to my individual palette. That said, I think it's priced a bit high.
Lawrence,
I am LOVING this selection . I drink mine neat and the warmth it produces on my pallet is resounding. I have treated my colleagues to this and they are amazed at how smooth the taste is. The bouquet is fantastic. Thank you.
Dana,
Ugh! Did not like this one at all. Too much of a banana aftertaste. Not for me.
guest,
Thank you someone who knows what he's talking about.
Tom,
Has a high expectation on this one as Whistle Pig produces some great product. However i was underwhelmed with this one. Not as smooth as i would have liked.
Patrick,
Nothing special here. I would drink it with ginger ale. Of course, Rye and Ginger.
Joyce,
I'm not personally much of a rye drinker, but this one wasn't bad at all. Might be a bit pricy for what you get.
Nicholas,
This is a delicious rye. Smooth and complex. Had it back to back with some others and there was no comparison. Whistle Pig does it right.
Brian,
I really enjoyed this Rye. One of my favorites. Very smooth. When my glass was empty I even enjoyed the vapors coming from the glass. Can't wait to try other WP's
JAMES,
Over hyped did not live up to expectations
Patrick,
David,
This is a great rye and you'll seem pretty cool having Whistle Pig on your shelf...but you're paying for trendiness as well as good whiskey. Realize you'll can find tastier whiskeys for less... but that doesn't change the fact that this is pretty tasty stuff with a good spicy bite, and come on, what's cooler than having something named Whistle Pig.
Ken,
As I still learn to appreciate more whisk(e)ys, I can't get past the waxy taste that so many of them have; including this one. My husband enjoyed it immensely, but it was not one I want to repeat.
James,
Great Sipping Rye.
Kris,
I did not care for this whiskey!
David,
a bit strong with a hint of pear. definitely a sipping whiskey. Tried it as a drinking whiskey but woke up with a headache.
Clay,
For a 10 year aged rye, I was expecting a mellower flavor
Michael,
It has a very strong bold flavor, definitely something y0u should sip and enjoy rather than just drink.
David,
Good flavor a small bite when neat. Woody and vanilla are the main notes
Theodore,
was not for me. Tasted like whiskey with a sour lemon in it. I really looked forward to it, but it just wasn't for me.
Michael,
Very off-tasting. Not sure what is wrong, kind of mildewy/moldy flavor. Very unfortunate. Hopefully, a bad batch and not typical for this brand. Disappointed in selection.
Stormy,
Maybe you dont enjoy top shelf whiskey? Cause this is great whiskey
Michael,
Unfortunately, it was bad. My buddy had another Whistle Pig that I tried and it was night and day difference between the two.
Marc,
Tasted like mold. Had to dump it down the drain!
Stormy,
Maybe you're not a whiskey drinker pal.
Brian,
Solid medium bodied rye. Smooth up front with the rye bite at the back end. Good flavors throughout
WM,
Didnt really care for the Whistle pig. Just not what I like
Jessica,
Nice whiskey to sit back and enjoy! Night cap worthy.
Chris,
Pretty good
Sunil,
Great flavor and finish. Woody and smooth with little bite.
Bryan,
So balanced, it goes down almost too easy.
Kirsha,
The spicy notes are very forward but has a nice smooth finish
Jeremy,
Absolutely delicious. Very smooth with some heat on the back end
Becki,
This is my first ‘rye’ (as such my first review, as well).
This 10-yr old Whistle Pig was spicy at our introduction, smooth and warm as we got to know each other and then tingly as we parted.
Quite enjoyable
Pat,
Very smooth. easy to drink.
Richard,
I tried to like it but couldn't.
Jeffrey,
Nice Rye and interesting and pleasant mix of spice and flavor.
Bill,
This is how all ryes should taste. Definite hints of caramel and honey IMOP
BRENDA,
Holy whiskey, Batman! I had heard so much about WhistlePig and was happy to find that the hype was well deserved.
Shannon,
Sweet, spicy, and smooth
Anne,
strong not a lot of flavor
Connor,
Nice spicy rye without a lingering bitterness
Stephen,
Started poor but finished decent
Shane,
Was not my favorite with a strong wooded/oak even pine taste. There are better ryes at this price point.
Scott,
Nothing really remarkable about this. Aftertaste was high compared to bullet or similar
Nick,
Being a bourbon man, I have not had much experience with rye whiskey and I have not yet purchased a bottle of rye for home. Thanks to the good folks over at Flaviar, I was provided with a bottle of WhistlePig 10 Year Straight Rye for purchasing a membership. I knew WhistlePig is a respected a sought after brand and that 10 years makes a good whiskey, but outside those two bits of information, I knew nothing of what I was in for. I poured it neat into a Glencairn glass and braced myself.
I don't know what the typical notes of rye should be, but I noticed a sweet mint smell, caramel, perhaps faint banana, and an earthy undertone (Is that the rye? Is rye earthy? I'm out of my depth here, someone help me). The mouthfeel was silky smooth and I knew immediately that if I had enough money I would fill up a bathtub with this stuff and luxuriate in it all night. The palate has brown sugar, pecan, and vanilla upfront with plenty of baking spices and orange in the back. Made with 100% rye, there is certainly a kick on the way down that is stronger than the bourbon I am used to, but it is nice. The finish is long and warm with tobacco and leather and a nice spice lingering in my gums (if this is unusual, please let me know so I can contact a dental professional as soon as possible). I don't know if staring with a 100% rye mash bill was the best introduction to rye that I could have chosen, but I did like this one and it has certainly opened the door to further exploration of the category. I can't compare it to other ryes or what a rye "should" be, so my rating is simply based on my experience with the label. A good experience, indeed.
Stephen,
Not premium, not awful.
Brad,
Was not a huge fan despite liking other Rye's. Agree with others, a bit of a bite and a bit of burn. Next time I'll let it sit out for 15 minutes or so to breathe a bit more. That may soften the bite.
Jason,
Douse in coke to drink. Sipping it confirms not a fan of rye blend.
Jim,
This rye is just to hit on the pallate, I couldn't really pick up any of the flavors. I prefer pikesville or Sagamore myself
Andrew,
Decent. Don’t love it, don’t hate it.
Tim,
Not a lot of flavor, lots of burn
Charlie,
Pleasantly surprised by this one. Has a somewhat harsh bite, but a smooth and tasty finish.
Rob,
Not a fan of the charred after taste
Justin,
Don’t have much experience with Ryes but I liked it. From the spice to the caramel and vanilla it was surprisingly smooth. I’d get it again.
Rod,
One of the few ryes I genuinely like. Some bite but not overpowering, spicy and great finish.
Robert,
Not a big Rye drinker but this is tasty. Light in taste.
Todd,
To me, this was definitely light in taste. It was almost airy. It has a pleasantly bitter bite at the end that I enjoyed.
Jim,
Definite bite
James,
Wasn't thrilled at all. It tasted like pickle juice. Almost turned me of ryes completely
Stefano,
Not a big Rye drinker but this is tasty
Christopher,
I had three bottles of this rye and I don’t get it. Each pour has an aftertaste of mildew that I can’t get past. Not sure how so many people like it.
Michael,
I'm a fan of earthy, exciting flavors just as I like the milder end of the spectrum at times. This us an aggressive, almost unhealthy landmark that teeters on the edge of moonshine. When I have something on my mind, this is a catalyst for action. it appeals more to my Irish than my Italian, Dutch or 100% American genes. It's powerful but brief because its potent. Beer chaser always to follow.
Ed,
I thought this was very good for the price point. Their 12 year old is even better.
Harwood,
Start selling this gut-rot by the gallon. I'd rather drink water.
Will,
Real good.
Josh,
Best Rye I’ve ever had
Daniel,
This is gross. Tastes like knock off Jack Daniels. Terrible aftertaste.
Tim,
I thought I didn't like Rye Whiskey..............I was wrong!
Rene,
Its a really good rye whiskey i have enjoyed it a lot it makes a great old fashion 100% proof and still has a great almost smooth taste . A must try if you like a good rye whiskey
Francisco,
Yeah definitely not premium whiskey.
Derek,
This is definitely not your typical rye whiskey. This has a very deep and rich flavor, and the 100 proof gives it the perfect bite. The only reason I gave it 9 stars is because of the price. When Bulleit can sell a 12yr rye for less than $50, why is this bottle $80+ in the full size version. They are both sourced from other distilleries. Sorry for the rant...I really do enjoy this bottle.
John,
Fairly good bottle. Not too much of a bite so I liked that part. Also, mixed well with soda and for old fashioneds
William,
I tried to drink it like a sipping whiskey without realizing it was 100 Proof. Big mistake. As Cleveland said "it's a little too verbose for my palate." However in an old fashion or Manhattan it makes a powerful punch that will sneak up on you.
Eric,
Yummy
CLEVELAND,
Good potent whiskey. But it's a little too verbose for my palate. I enjoy it but it has a very strong flavor that reminds me almost of rubbing alcohol.
Scott,
It felt thin and tinny. I am glad Flaviar gave it to me, as I would have felt bad buying it.
Daniel,
Based on the comments, this is apparently a very divisive pour; however, I shared my first pour with a group of friends and we unanimously found this to be a pretty fine dram.
Sean,
There's a historical site near where I live that has a museum attached to the welcome center. It's called Desoto Bend, and it is the site of an old paddle boat's resting place. The boat was excavated and all of the contents were placed in the museum, which has a very distinct smell. That smell is how I would describe the taste of Whistle Pig.
It is, in my opinion, vile and worthy of the deepest depths of hell. The addition of cola is not enough to overpower the onslaught of my tastebuds and the remainder of the bottle was swiftly poured down the drain.
I tried to find some redeeming qualities, I really did. However, this vile potion obliterated my senses so thoroughly that it could not be saved. In short, don't submit yourself to the abuses of this liquid unless you are a masochist and drinking vulgar spirits is your preferred form of self-punishment.
Austin,
Smooth and distinct flavor that is enjoyable after every sip. Highly recommend
Alycia,
Smooth and easy to drink
Clint,
It had a horrible aftertaste not a very good whiskey to drink neat.
Trishanna,
One of the better bottles from Whistlepig
Harwood,
Better with a bit of water.
Rachel,
Very smooth with a sweet finish. Loved it.
Kent,
tasting notes were right on for me with a strong woody/smokey finish.
I enjoyed it more as I worked through the bottle.
Emily,
Normally don’t drink Rye but this was easy and smooth. Gets better every sip
Cody,
Had a very stout flavor, with a hint of smoke that wasn't too overpowering. Me and the Mrs finished the bottle in one night over game of thrones. Goes down very easy. Defiantly worth a buy.
Michael,
Very smooth. Flavor spiral was dead on.
Steven,
I thought I just don't like Rye but it turns out it was just this whistle pig. It's a great gift I found out. Wish I remembered specifics it was just not that Rye I was looking for.
Ed,
Smooth start, strong smoky middle and a nice spicy finish
Michelle,
I’m not the biggest whiskey fan honestly, most of them burn me up later. This was way different, good bit, spicy aftertaste and all around pleasant
brendan,
Very sour and odd finish. Not crazy about this one
Kim,
Not a fan of this one but my adult son liked it - so, Happy Birthday!!
Michael,
Amazing journey of taste. I recommend for educated palate.
Michael,
I love it! But those who don't like the earthy intense after taste be warned. Definitely not a beginners drink. Would recommend to whoever wants to give their tongue a unique treat
David,
This was my first Rye and if was any indication of what Ryes bring to the table, it will be my last. Left an odd almost moldy aftertaste that lingered for an unpleasantly long time. Maybe if you mix it with a ginger ale or equal, you might disguise the taste.
Caleb,
Very tasty, a bit of smoke on the finish. So smooth!
Greg,
This tasted like grass clippings to me. I enjoy Whistle Pig, but not this one.
Martin,
Great flavor and very smooth
Matt,
for some reason gave me a headache
Laura,
Smooth and tasty.
Viyan,
Spicy, molasses flavor
Jonathan,
One of my favorite whiskies! Very smooth and drinkable, it is wonderful straight up. It has nice undertones of vanilla, honey, and other flavors built upon its rye base. Freaking great whiskey.
Michael,
Great taste. Smooth for the 100 proof that it is.
Mark,
Great
Brenton,
This was really smooth and sweet. Has a lot of flavors the more you
Sip it.
Brandon,
Very smooth !
Scott,
One of my favorite drinks period!
Scott,
It was okay but not a fan of rye whiskey.
Johnathan,
My first box and this was my gift I am pleased to have had the opportunity to taste this rye whiskey and it lived up to my expectations. It was sweet in the nose and the blend of flavors on the palette was surprising. Looking forward to more.
Brian,
Good strong taste.
Damian,
Very nice. Got me interested in trying more ryes. Love the spice. Will be buying more.
Chrystyna,
My husband really loves this one
Brian,
Nose was light slightly vanilla. I think it was my bottle but definitely a mold or bad cork taste that carried through to the finish. Too bad as I had high hopes. Much prefer Bulleit rye.
Jon,
Did this taste like fresh cut grass meets a root cellar to you? I was trying to place the flavour and you seem to have noticed it.
WESLEY,
This was the most unique whisky I think I have ever tasted. That being said, I enjoyed it. I can see how some people did not care for it because of how different it is. I thought it was smooth and had a great spice to it. Tasted like someone was making cookies at the same time they were making the whisky.
Elliott,
Weird finish. Not good.
Richard,
Very distinct flavor, not bad but def not a favorite. Can’t exactly place the flavor but goes well with a little ginger ale.
Kristyn,
Tastes like plastic on the finish. Was hard to finish so I mixed it with a cocktail.
Frank,
I don't know if it was just my bottle but this sample had a deep moldy taste to it. This may be "distinct flavor" that I've read about but not something that I will be drinking again anytime soon.
Jon,
Did this taste like fresh cut grass meets a root cellar to you? I was trying to place the flavour and you seem to have noticed it. I wonder if its a bad batch or if they are all like that?
Byron,
Straight up tasted like the cork rotted no matter the airy glass or ice
Tracy,
Sharp and strong. A piece of ice mellowed it enough to enjoy the taste. The spice not my favorite.
Jim,
Was a bit ruff when I first tried it, it has grown on me. Nice flavor.
Rodney,
That is a beautiful bourbon, lots of flavor. smooth followed by burn. Will purchase this bottle again.
Patrick,
Don't care for this Rye much. It has a very distinct flavor and finish. Not sure what the distinct flavor is that I'm getting, but it's not working for me.
James,
To the nose not as smith as I would like but has a nice finish with lots of flavor going on. Love it
Justin,
Excellent whiskey, very smooth with a somewhat nutty flavor and long and intense finish! Great choice to drink straight or in cocktails.
Val,
Delicious
Anthony,
Nice complexity, long finish, a tad hot but I keep reaching for another sip
Jose,
First time trying it, surprisingly good, you can taste the spice at first, and a smooth caramel finish, definitely will restock
Matthew,
Too much burn for me.
Melissa,
I give a AA+++
Melissa,
Very smooth I would give it a 9 out of 10 will be putting it in my whiskey cabinet
Robert,
Very smooth. Aftertaste more woody than smoky. Slightly sweet. The flavors are subtle. Overall very drinkable and I would definitely buy it again.
Charles,
This stuff was much better than I was expecting...it was pretty flavorful and smooth and an overall good taste.
David,
I’m a Whistle Pig fan and this doesn’t disappoint. A nice relatively complex rye that’s finishes smooth.
Stephen,
Enjoyed this one, both neat and with a small cube of ice. A great introduction to the club. Will be stocking the bar with this one.
Doug,
Got this from my first Flaviar pack! It's challenging and spicy, without being overly complex. Reacts nicely to a little ice or water.
Joshua,
Smooth and easy to drink mixes well with almost anything
Mandy,
Spixyness hits heavy at first, but fades into richness and rye. there is a charred flowery taste that lingers for quite a while. This is my first taste of rye whiskey; cant wait to taste more to see the differences.
Marcus,
Very spicy/peppery with first sip, has a long finish
Anthony,
Surprisingly delicious! Spicy up front followed by a great oaky flavor with hints of vanilla and caramel.
Sara,
Smooth and good taste and a great finish. My favorite so far.
Jennifer,
Warm and smooth. But for a lover of Rye and Kentucky Bourbon, it was a bit too peaty for me. It was a hit at the party.
Bryan,
Delicious but strong
Mark,
Nose is very smooth. First taste bites the tongue initially with spice and citrus orange. Added few drops of distilled water and flavors really opened up.
Clifford,
I found the rye somewhat harsh, and not truly to my taste.
Melissa,
I enjoyed WhistlePig. I drank it neat. It was smooth and had a lot of flavor. Warmed me up from the inside out.
Aaron,
Fine mixing rye but nothing really special. There’s better bottles out there in that price point but as part of the welcome box it was ok.
Mark,
Smooth yet strong....easy to drink neat and worked well in an Old Fashioned.
Kelly,
I haven't had a lot of experience with rye, but of the ones that I've had, this has been my favorite. It's not a drink to take neat, unless you're going very slowly. I'm still learning and don't have the vocabulary yet to sound like I know all about what I'm doing, but going slow (as in sipping a drink over the course of a long movie) made it very enjoyable. Any faster than that, and yes, I can see why people didn't enjoy it.
Mark,
Taste like dirty straw
harold,
Great smooth flavor
David,
Left the aftertaste of dirt. Very hard to drink neat.
Lori,
my first rye.
Too much burn to drink neat, which is how I usually drink. Interesting and learning a lot Flaviar. Bring it on.
Denmon,
A fantastic whiskey.
Brandon,
Heavy spice notes...mint, clove and pepper with vanilla and charred oak tones. The slightly higher proof gives room for further exploration with water/ice. It's a good rye in my book.
David,
Almost a grassy flavor, not to my taste. Too light, and with an odd tang.
FRANK,
Its not the greatest Rye Whiskey but it is smooth
Thomas,
Lighter Fluid
Melody,
This is my first foray into rye whiskey and was surprised by the aroma, initial taste. Before this, the best whiskey/bourbon I've had was Gentleman Jack Daniels which was nice. I might have to make this my normal whisky, when I drink it.
Trey,
Has a very smooth entry with a sharp bite. A very subtle earthy tone on the exhale. Overall a very high quality rye.
Jeremie,
not awful, it was just kind of boring for a rye . makes a nice mellow manhattan .
Andrew,
Flaviar sent me this one for my welcome gift and I was pleasantly surprised by the burn! Not like the bourbon I normally drink, but a welcome flavor that I may grow to love.
Michael,
Nice, kind of hot but you get a lot of spice and honey. Much nicer than most whiskeys but then again I’m a bourbon guy.
Pete,
Classic rye spice, but not a whole lot going on afterward. Nice in a cocktail, but there are many other ryes I’d rather drink neat.
Luke,
Nose: Rye spice and honey
Taste: Sweet honey, rye spice heavy, some oak on the finish
Helen,
Light on flavor. High burn. Smooth but harsh.
Robert,
Has a strong bite, but smooths out on the second shot. I like the peppery afterburn.
Evan,
My goodness, this is a tough one to sip. I would try this in a Sazerac but it’s a bit harsh to drink neat (at least for me).
Jesse,
Smooth with a kick for an aftertaste
Darren,
First experience with rye whisky and very pleasantly surprised. Very smooth- I dig the peppery bite.
Savannah,
The spice is interesting and it seems to linger. Combined with the mint and honey it’s definitely something that has a unique taste.
David,
This was great and the minty notes were amazing!!!
Michael,
I like this one. Smooth for a Rye and very balanced.
Corey,
I don’t typically drink Rye whiskey, but received this as a gift. It has a really good flavor, but the finish is a bit harsh for my tastes. Again, not usually a Rye whiskey drinker, so take that with the grain is salt. All in all, I like it
David,
Great flavor, one off my favorites.
Justin,
Excellent. Crisp but also smooth. This got me looking into more ryes. I tried the High West double rye, but that doesn’t live up to Whistlepig. I’ll buy another bottle.
Thomas,
Loved it very much. Nice to have a glass ir too after work.
Brendan,
Something I’m goin g to have to grow into
Brendan,
Something that I’m going to have to grow into
Stanley,
Quite oaky, sharp, not smooth, floral, perfumey nose. Rating 5/10
Eric,
Great flavor. I liked it with a couple of ice cubes to dial back the alcohol burn.
James,
Wonderfully fun. It's like a bail of hay. One of the few whiskeys my wife likes right off the bat
Bob,
I was unsure of what to expect because I really never had been exposed to rye that much. I was pleasantly surprised on how smooth of a pour this was; looking forward to my next glass.
Luis,
An excellent rye that opens well, with medium legs. A touch on the bourbon side, with strong hints of vanilla, but a unique spice all its own.
Steven,
Too sharp of an alcohol flavor
guest,
Very disappointed given price range
Maxx,
Adequate Rye. More floral on the palate while lacking some complexity of other more refined ryes. Will give WhistlePig's other ryes a taste in the future.
Devin,
I wasn’t sure about Rye, I couldn’t have been more wrong. It’s a great sipper with an enjoyable lingering bite. Thanks for the introduction.
Jennifer,
Classic favorite
Bruno,
Not super drinkable on its own, but a likely standout for Manhattans and hot toddies.
Sarah,
My favorite order so far. Very drinkable and great finish.
Eric,
AMAZING! This is one of my absolute favorites now. Right up there with Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch.
Rob,
Amazing rye whiskey. Great finish, especially for rye. The guys at WhistlePig are onto something special.
Winston,
Very good, enjoyed very much
Adam,
Excellent
Adam,
A great rye whiskey, spicy and smooth.
Lester,
Very good rye whiskey
Chris,
Spicy and smooth! Best rye I’ve had so far.
Dianne,
Turns out I'm not such a fan of Rye Whiskey, so my low rating is more a reflection of that than the actual quality of the brand. More of a Scotch gal, it seems. :)
Paulette,
did not like - wasn't smooth at all - very bitter
Dana,
Very smooth; good dearth of flavor; one of our favorites !
Alecia,
I share my spirits. This Whiskey was enjoyed by several different tasters, and only disliked by one, who felt it was too strong of a finish. I, like the majority who sampled, disagreed.
Richard,
Rye not being one of my favorites I thought I would try this one.
Tasty but Still not one I will purchase again.
Jelani,
Very vanilla forward, with caramel and plenty of spice. Love this rye and how transparent the WhistlePig brand is.
Dallas,
My favorite Rye so far, it had a stronger taste of spicy butterscotch to me which was good.
Lawrence,
Nice flavor. It didn't last long on my shelf. So, I thought if that was good, the 12 year old would be fantastic...not really. Read my review.
Max,
Not a big fan of rye, but this was a really nice expression with a very spicy finish
Leslie,
Strong start more flavorful finish. This is the first taste of a Rye Whiskey for me.
Johanna,
Tasted like it was made in a mildewed cask. Not smooth, not pleasant. no thanks.
al,
tasted of lamb spleen and timber ash.
Steve,
Not a bad change of pace from what i normally drink but not one i will go out of my way to purchase. If you like the spice it’s a perfect fit, I prefer more flavor.
Amber,
Gross
John,
Great flavors. Smooth. I like the notes of caramel and honey.
Melanie,
I did not like this at all. It tastes like swamp water. It has an aftertaste akin to something stagnating. I actually looked in my glass to see if I had grabbed a dirty one that might have had algae growing in it. Not for me at all.
David,
I can see myself drinking a lot of this
Jonathan,
A lot of character in this - more so than my usual bar staple 100 proof (Rittenhouse) and not as cleanly drinkable (neat) but deliciously eclectic with varying flavors to chase. What is clearly conveyed as mint comes through to me as more grassy (not all bad - but distracting). Butterscotch on the nose is glorious and the other elements round out a great experience. Just way to pricey to consider (oft a real good reason).
Niels,
Really surprised with the Rye whiskeys. This was really easy to drink. Once it runs out I will replace it! If you want to try Rye I would only recommend it to someone that does enjoy the burn at the end.
Brinkley,
Great rye! The mint really comes through! Smooth and spicy! Favorite rye so far.
Steve,
Very strong, but enjoyable flavor. Personally enjoyed it on the rocks over neat. Not a huge rye fan but this was good.
Anthony,
Enjoyable
Eric,
Recommended to me when I couldn't find Thomas Handy rye or E.H Taylor rye. This is a good substitute if you can't find those. Not quite as full bodied, but for the price it's a great rye.
Garrett,
Too harsh for my taste
Patricia,
I like it. Love it is too strong of a word for this one.
Laken,
I thought it was pretty good over ice but a bit harsh without it.
steve,
Smooth with an initial char but then sweetens with a honey finish
Jared,
Good flavor, easy sippin,
Jeff,
Great introductory RYE with a smooth and flavorful taste. It’s only gets better from here when you wet your Whistle!
Michael,
One of the smoother ryes I've tasted, not too spicey. 100 proof
Aaron,
Good rye, but not much rye flavor. Starts spicy and ends smooth with a hint of earthiness in the middle.
Justin,
I have to admit that I am a bourbon drinker and Rye is not my thing, but wit that said this was a better Rye. My wife who loves Rye said that was one of her favorites. Not too sweet, not too spicy, but it still had the herbal notes of a rye to me. Overall I don;t know if I would spend the $80 on a full bottle when there are other just as good Ryes available for half that.
Steven,
This is a very good Rye. Great taste, smell and is smooth. I however do not think it is worth the almost $80 it costs.
Travis,
Unexpectedly very clean, easy Rye. Not too much spice drowning out the flavor. The finish is better than most Rye Whiskeys I have tried.
brad,
Glad i got this one for free. Doesn't compare to Angel's Envy Rye or Masterson's.
Brandon,
Wasn’t nearly as good as I thought it was going to be. Strong taste but not flavorful.
Aaron,
Very earthy and grainy without any complexity. Not at all worth the price tag. Whistlepig does make some great juice, but this is night/day compared to the tasty old world cask or boss hog
Eitan,
Delcious. So smooth. Would definitely buy it again.
Dylan,
Very smooth and great flavor
Chase,
I was never a fan of rye until trying this. Surprisingly easy sipping with a good rye spice. I really picked up leathery notes in this which was new for me. I will likely pick up another bottle if I can find it on store shelves or it comes back into stock.
John,
This is a very unique rye whiskey. It has a somewhat stony/metallic aftertaste, like mineral rock or granite--hard to describe, but still enjoyable as something different.
Devin,
First sip goes down like water. It’s unbelievable on how smooth this is. It’s gotta be one of my favorite rye whiskeys and will be definitely getting a lot more of it.
Mike,
What a great drink. So popular I brought it to an outing and only got a smidgen. But it was fantastic and smooth
Burton,
I prefer the nose to the taste. The aroma is vanilla and cherry. The taste is grainy … rye and grass. And burn. This is not a favorite, but I would drink it if offered.
David,
My Whistle Pig is lovely. It is however, very hot to the taste and its bouquet. The legs were long and thin. I added a dram or two of water and the enjoyment was born. It had a silky mouth feel and was warming to my throat and nose. It was slightly peaty, but my palate is not yet educated and experienced enough to pick out much of the flavor spiral. I will continue to enjoy this spirit with a dram of water and at room temperature or slightly warmed in my palm as I take it in my Glencairn Glass.
Dwayne,
I’m new to this but I loved my first bottle. I enjoyed every sip. Thank you for introducing me to my new drink.
Christopher,
I really enjoyed this whiskey. Smooth with a nice finish, not overpowering. Serve neat and pair with a Perdomo Lot 23.
Edgar,
Out of the freezer and it is very smooth and the flavor smooth and rich a different finish than bourbon 10 out of ten
Chris,
Better as a mixing whiskey than a sipping one.
Duane,
I loved this Rye... spicy and a bit smokey. Made a terrific Manhattan!
Kihm,
A medicinal opening note and lingering tannin made this too much rye for me.
Michael,
This would be a good drink to have over ice. I feel that way for all Rye since it is a spicy whiskey. Straight it was too sharp but still a good rye. Definitely smelled and tasted caramel. Will try it in a sazarec soon
Lawrence,
Too spicy for my palate
Mark,
I thought it was horrible.
Gayla,
This is extremely smooth with a pleasant finish.
Kyle,
Really like the caramel and butterscotch then finished with spice. Haven’t had a lot of Ryes but now I can say I’m a fan!
Daniel,
Excellent. Highly recommended.
Brian,
I was not a fan of Rye until I was offered a shot of Whistle Pig. Yes, just a few rocks soften the pepper and make this a fine sipping whiskey with notes of caramel and vanilla with the typical rye spice. It has opened my palletes to the world of rye and I have found a few others I like, Templeton and Wild Turkey, but most are too medicinal in flavor. But Whistle Pig is still my favorite rye.
charlie,
Not my favorite rye I’ve ever had , but still grs the job done
Aaron,
Was not really worth 45
Rebecca,
This is pretty hot; I needed a touch of water to cool it down enough to taste. More experienced whiskey connoiseurs might not, I suppose.
After that, I get a nice pepper & honey, followed by barrel a hint of cinnamon on the nose. For the taste, mostly sweet/honey shows up, with a short finish.
Gary,
I like it, was a very nice Rye in comparison to some others like Crown Royal Rye.
Michael,
If you like rye whiskey you’ll like this! Smooth with a nice rye bite
Ralph,
I was surprised how smooth this Rye was despite packing an ABV OF 50%. It has a nice spice to it. Delicious neat!
Francesco,
Smooth clean taste, not harsh. Very enjoyable
Scott,
the tastiest 50% alcohol I have ever had... Put some starch in your panties.
Tim,
Smooth. Nice rye spice. Not harsh
Steven,
Too spicy.
Michael,
Did not like it. Very bitter and harsh, not many flavors to taste due to the harshness of the alcohol taste.
Reuben,
Smells like rubbing alcohol. Tastes like spicy honey. Goes down smooth. I’d call that a win.
Joseph,
Really enjoyed this. It was my first taste of rye whiskey and I liked it.
Thomas,
Very Good Rye - I'm a scotch, Gin, Brandy drinker but have had some rye as a change of pace.
Mark,
One of the best whiskey!!
Geoff,
Interesting initial flavor, however, on the back end...it tasted like grass. Not one I would buy
Devin,
Love this Rye Whiskey, DO NOT use with mixers! Great poured by itself or as an Old Fashioned. Heavier Oak with Cinnamon, puts hair on your chest and finishes smooth.
ramy,
Smooth and great on the rocks my favorite was an old fashioned using this rye
J,
I can’t get past the oak taste. Not sure if I’m a big Rye fan. So take my rating with a grain of salt. It tastes like a typical whiskey, smooth, but just so much oak flavor.
Sergiy,
The distinct smelll of cheap alcohol. The taste is very much the same. Very bitter. Has a strong bite.
Christopher,
Smooth and strong taste
Shaun,
I didn't get smooth from this at all, lacked notes cause the heat was overwhelming. Very disappointed in what I thought would be a higher standard with this label. Ice helped but made it watered down and couldn't find the sweet spot with it.
Paul,
smooth nice little bite not a lot of heat going down
Daniel,
Very tasty
Allen,
I like it. Smooth like an old pair of shoes. great on the rocks after dinner. Oh hell, good anytime straight up or with ice.
Ian,
Got this with my 1 year Flaviar Membership. Fantastic Rye! Did not last long on my shelf.
Thomas,
Did not like.
Harsh, low quality.
Will not have again.
Kat,
Easy on the sphere bourbon. Smooth mellow palate
Kevin,
The flavor of this was excellent. Smooth from start to finish. The biggest disappointment was it’s so thick I might as well drink syrup. I took 5 or 6 sips and gave the bottle to a friend. If you enjoy a thick spirit then you may enjoy the flavor and consistency.
Jacob,
100 proof. 'Nuff said.
Joshua,
well Done, not at all what I was expecting. My wife and I were expecting a punch instead it was a smooth well balanced taste from beginning to end
BILLY,
Great mixing whiskey little to harsh for me.
Jason,
Not so much of a rye guy, but after a couple of sips, it became much smoother than its harsh beginning.
Jason,
Not so much of a rye guy, but after a couple of sips, it became much smoother than its harsh beginning.
Eric,
Spicey caramel flavor. Has a bite, I don't find it very smooth. Not a Rye I would add to my collection.
Arnold,
A slight bite at first then notes of caramel, vanilla and honey then a pleasant finish.
Ronald,
This is just not what I look for in a whiskey.
Caroline,
The raisin was too prominent and ruined this whiskey for me and my boyfriend
Aaron,
Huge fan of WP. The 10 is excellent. I haven’t found a WP I didn’t like actually. The smaller bottle of 10 that came with the welcome box was a nice treat!
Justin,
Drank neat: I like the caramel and vanilla notes I pick up at first. The finish is okay for me. A bit too much spice for my pallet.
Brian,
It finishes nicely. A little vinegary taste at first but the finish makes up for it.
Tim,
Don’t like rye whiskey.
Billy,
A decent drink a slightly vinegary taste initially but a smooth finish
Daryl,
My first rye. Guess I’m more into something smooth. From the rest of the comments, it sounds like I need to save the rest for an old fashioned.
I did get hints of butterscotch and honey, neither of which I’m crazy about. It’s got a nice finish though, and the harshness of the proof waned.
Christopher,
Agree with a lot of folks here. Tried it neat first and it was pretty harsh. Went to rocks and as the ice melted in the better it got. I had a second glass. A good rye for sure.
Mira,
Initially harsh, but overall a clean and smooth finish
Brandon,
First experience with rye whiskey. A bit more bite at first. Drank on the rocks so longer ice was melting the better it got. By the end I wanted another glass.
Andrew,
More bite than flavor. Expected it with 100 proof.
Christopher,
A little harsh straight, but the best rye I’ve ever had in an old fashioned. Really great flavor stands out in the cocktail.
Thomas,
Pretty solid rye. Not a ton of the spicy notes in my opinion you can get with rye, but still good for what it’s worth!
Charlie,
Really good Rye
Elisabeth,
I tend to find rye whiskeys on the harsher side, but this is incredibly smooth with a balanced flavor.
Bryan,
Wonderful rye!! The flavors lineup and take their turns. Very spicy yet tame enough to pick up on the complexity
Laurence,
I am "not" a Rye man.
Tonya,
The scent was overpowering, causing our nose hairs to burn, reminding us of turpintine. Our eyes watered before we even took a shot. The liquid was smooth going down, leaving a wake of a smouldering caramel and smokey pine. I felt it coat my stomach, and I was imediatly flushed like the lightweight I am. My husband took another dose, knowing he could handle it. Overall it was an enlightening experience, we're still learning and adapting to all the new scents and tastes. We're certainly not dead yet, and this whiskey helped remind us of that.
Brian,
Awful. Tastes like synthetic Astro turf...as I imagine they would taste like.
Chris,
Pleasantly surprised! Can drink it neat or in an Old Fashioned. SMOOTH
Daniel,
Smooth with spice up front, Clay Risen describes the flavor as ‘red hots candy’ and that’s pretty on the spot. Drunk neat with a few drops of water opens up the vanilla up front and mint on the finish.
Cameron,
Very strong wintergreen presence. Overall pretty good.
william,
really enjoyed whistlepig. Did not think I liked rye whiskey
until I tried this. Thankyou
Jacob,
Great Rye! I agree it's a bit harsh at first, but that's to be expected with 100 proof.
Alex,
Great rye, very smoky finish.
Thomas,
Decent flavor, but initial harshness crowds it out. Try it if you like your whiskey aggressive.
Kevin,
Not bad, very harsh at first. However it gets smoother still on the fence with this one.
Bob,
Little harsh going down gets smoother on aftertaste
Barb,
Very smooth and loved the flavor.
Robert,
It's alright. Not my favorite but its decent. I haven't mixed it into anything yet just straight for right now.
Russell,
Very strong at the onset but then all flavor disappears after a few seconds.
Kurt,
Fantastic RYE, I love the spice and vanilla flavor! It has a great finish. One of the best Rye’s I have had. A definite favorite!
otis,
Have not tried many ryes over the years. So far the wistle pig is the best.
Shane,
Not a very smooth taste. Harsh and bitter. Not my choice.
Jeff,
Good taste, bit still more of a vodka drinker.
Jeff,
Best rye I’ve ever had. I love a good rye manhattan, but this stuff doesn’t get mixed with anything except a bit of cool still water.
Thomas,
I am not a fan of rye but having that said, this one is a smooth tasting rye. I would agree with others who have commented that adding a couple of cubes of ice make a difference in the smoothness and finish.
Kelsey,
Smooth for the rye whiskeys that we have tried. Will definitely get again.
Brandon,
It's decently smooth when consumed neat. Nice finish.
