The world’s Rye Whiskey powerhouse releases its own award-winning Straight Rye.
George Ross founded Rossville Distillery in 1847. Aside from a brief switch to industrial production during Prohibition, it has been producing fine Spirits continuously since then. Through a series of mergers and acquisitions it has been owned by Seagram’s, Pernod Ricard, and others over the years. But since 2011 it has been the flagship of MGP — one of the largest producers of Whiskey, Gin, and other Spirits.
The Rossville Union line of Rye Whiskies is named after the original distillery in Lawrenceburg. Rossville Union Mater Crafted Straight Rye Whiskey is the first release, created from just 159 barrels of two core mash bills from the MGP line-up. The first is 95% rye and 5% malted barley to deliver a nice Rye kick. The second is a 51% rye, 45% corn, and 4% malted barley to provide a balance of sweetness. The blend is well-balanced, aged five to seven years in new oak, and bottled at a very nice 47% ABV.
What does Rossville Union Master Crafted Straight Rye Whiskey taste like?
The Flavor Spiral™ shows the most common flavors that you'll taste in Rossville Union Master Crafted Straight Rye Whiskey and gives you a chance to have a taste of it before actually tasting it.
We invented Flavor Spiral™ here at Flaviar to get all your senses involved in tasting drinks and, frankly, because we think that classic tasting notes are boring.
I was very pleasantly surprised, one of my favorite ryes now.
Kurt,
First nose told me I was about to be happy. My nose was correct,...as taste did not disappoint at all, which sometimes happens in other bottles. Wow, it was good. To clarify: room temperature, straight. Wonderful!
It got my attention from first sip. And sip, you should. Let your taste buds grow and explore between sips. Don't rush it. Trust me. Even my gums tingled long after the sip. Just enough bite, perfect really, for my taste.
Caramel, charred wood and nuts. Little fruity and sweet to please, then the char grows again and another bite. Oak is there too.
This makes me want to sit by the campfire, eat smores, then after (not during), sip on this excellent gift from above. Buy it. I will, again!!! Amazing value for a ride worth taking.
Paul,
I really liked this. I am on a big rye kick right now and I would pit this against bottles twice it’s price. More caramel forward, sweet light sharpness but mellow, casual and warm finish. Slight char. Spice notes late. Very good. Take your time, the flavor mounts nicely between sips.
Mike,
Really good rye!
Elijah,
Spicy as a rye whiskey should be. However, I preferred it in cocktails rather than neat.
Patrick,
Never had rye until I tried this. It is really good
Stephen,
Not a scotch drinker. Samples were to scotchy for me, the Rossville was a pleasant surprise, good taste and smooth.
David,
Cinnamon forward nose with a light oak mellowness before more cinnamon with some spicy nutmeg. I'm new to ryes, but I enjoyed this one
Kyle,
Mediocre, not very flavorful. Best used in cocktails
Michael,
I am a scotch drinker and don’t like when the quarterly selections don’t include a good scotch. So I’ve been forced to try a bourbon (yuck, historical hang-up), and now a rye. It was drinkable, but not my preference.
Jerald,
I’m usually not a rye man, however this one is great! Not too hot or spicy. Will definitely buy another.
Victoria,
Great taste, very smooth.
Clarence,
Got this in my first box. Not a bad rye by any means but it just doesn’t stand out for the price. Good for cocktails though.
Manny,
It was ok. Not my favorite
Rene',
It was alright and fairly boring. It was not my favorite to drink neat. I’ll probably use it in recipes because I’m sure not going to let it go to waste.
Gregory,
Smooth rye with an excellent taste
Warren,
A decent rye that's not phony with light flavor and not sweet. Good for mixing cocktails maybe not the best for drinking neat.
Nathan,
Nondescript. Everything about this rye is just average. This will be a mixer, though I am not optimistic a Manhattan or Old Fashioned will be a better use for this rye as it doesn't even deliver neat. Feels like a $25 price tag would have been more appropriate.
Nathan,
I get brown sugar on the nose, a smooth sweetness on the palate and the finish is clean and spicy. Not bitter like cheaper ryes. Solid sipper.
James,
Nice taste. Makes an excellent Manhattan!
Tobin,
Its alright. Overall flavor is pleasant. I would likely buy again but it wont make it into my top 20 list.
Allina,
I bought this for my husband, his name is Ross. It is one of the smoothest whiskies we've ever had!
Brian,
Solid but unremarkable rye. Mixes well, makes a good manhattan; but wouldn't be my choice when I want to sip something special.
Jeremy,
Not too fancy, but a pretty tasty rye. Added a splash of water to bring out the flavor a bit.
Richard,
It’s a great bottle to get for my quarterly option. Definitely something I’ll make a cocktail with. But not something I’m going back for
Vickie,
My husband says this is one of the best he has ever had!
James,
Good rye.
Rob,
Very smooth rye, manageable spice up front with a pronounced sweetness. Excellent with a couple of ice cubes
Matthew,
Quite nice. Served on rocks. On the sweeter side which I don’t mind.
Bruce,
Smooth, just the right amount of flavor. This was my first order
Billy,
Not a smooth Rye for the price point
Joshua,
Great flavor. This was my first bottle after joining. I'm starting to realize I love rye and caramel notes. Great Indiana rye.
Josh,
Very thick and oily mouthfeel compared to other whisky at this proof level. Certainly a milder rye than some others I've had resulting a more smooth and enjoyable sipper neat. Great for an old fashioned or over an ice sphere if that's your preference. I would pass on another at the price considering I can get Michter's American for the same amount and there's no comparison between them in my eyes. It's good but not worth the price to me.
Stuart,
Fair amount of spice/heat that one cube of ice takes away. I prefer to have drinks near. This needs 15-20minutes to open up if you like it neat but then has some nice flavors. A great rotational drink
Dan,
Very smooth with good flavor. Might just be me, gives me a headache.
Lisa,
Very smooth, no burn at the end.
Sonja,
Very very smooth
Mark,
Warm, spicy start, but not harsh. Good flavor, Carmel and vanilla flavors come through for me.
Joshua,
This is not bad as ryes go, but not my favorite. Good Spice, easy to enjoy.
Mark,
Nice flavors and smooth. Enjoyed it.
Timothy,
I’m not a huge rye fan but this is a decent rye.
Ed,
smooth, easy...comfortable. Love it.
Ed,
smooth. easy. really enjoyed it
Daniel,
Good spice without the burn.
Jose,
Nice strong flavor but it’s not super smooth.
Shannon,
Not worth the price. Too peppery for me. Tried it sipping and in a cocktail, no luck.
Guy,
It has a great aroma right out of the bottle. A very smooth drinking rye whiskey that goes down very easy with not too much spice. Great for hot weather sipping out on the porch.
Ed,
Hey guy. Agreed! Cheers Ed
Thomas,
Great aroma, super smooth with light spice.
Thomas,
Great aroma, smooth taste with light spice.
Gene,
very smooth, too smooth LOL...Love it. Straight up enjoyable
