The 13th edition of Parker’s Heritage might be their best yet.
Heaven Hill Distillers is unique. They are one of the oldest and largest Bourbon distillers in the world, they have the second largest standing inventory of aging Bourbon, and they have grown to become the seventh largest supplier of spirits in the US. BUT… they are still family owned. In fact, they are the only family-owned production house left in Kentucky. God bless the Shapira family! The spirit brands owned and controlled by Heaven Hill includes Evan Williams, Elijah Craig, their namesake Heaven Hill, and many dozens more.
As we’ve noted before, the “Parker’s Heritage Collection” is a limited edition series from Heaven Hill. Each year they select a special Whiskey to honor the legendary Heaven Hill Master Distiller Parker Beam. Since each year is a hand-selected release, the proof, age, and flavor profile varies each year. The 13th Edition Parker’s Heritage Collection is an eight year-old Rye using Heaven Hill’s standard Rye mash bill. But where the core Whiskies in their line up age in barrels with a medium, Level 3 char, this special edition has aged for eight years and nine months in Level 5 char barrels on the seventh floor of Rickhouse Y. The heavier char yields a strong, spicier, and smokier profile and the higher position in the Rickhouse means hotter summer temps and variation, yielding more wood penetration. And you will taste everything at a full-blast 52.5% ABV.
Smartass corner:
The late, great Parker Beam suffered from ALS — Lou Gehrig’s Disease. As a tribute, Heaven Hill makes a donation to the ALS Association in his honor for each bottle of Parker’s Heritage sold. Over the last six editions that has amounted to over $1 million.
