A Straight Bourbon from Chicken Cock that is 100% made in Kentucky and 100% delicious.

The Chicken Cock brand goes all the way back to 1856 in Paris, Kentucky. It was a fairly successful Bourbon in its day, but things REALLY took off during Prohibition when the owners moved production to Canada and took the innovative step of packaging their hooch in tin cans to hide it from Johnny Law. In the 1950’s the Chicken Cock Distillery burned down, but liquor wonder-kind and serial entrepreneur Matti Anttila of Grain & Spirits bought the brand in 2012 and released their revitalized line of Whiskey in 2017. And things have gone very very well. So well, that in 2018 they entered into a collaborative distilling agreement with Bardstown Bourbon Co. — a powerhouse — to help them keep up with burgeoning demand.

One of the interesting things about Chicken Cock Kentucky Straight Bourbon is that it feels like a return to the roots of the brand. It’s currently 100% distilled, aged, and bottled in Kentucky, just 76 miles from the original distillery site — the G. G. White Distillery — in Paris, Kentucky, where Chicken Cock was made back in the day. This Straight Bourbon is designed to follow in those footsteps with pride. And to make certain that you can taste all that hard work, it’s bottled at 45% ABV without unnecessary filtration.

During Prohibition, those famous "tin cans" of Chicken Cock Whiskey were smuggled into Manhattan where they were reportedly the house Whiskey at the famous Cotton Club in Harlem where Jazz greats like Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong entertained the crowds.

Nose / Aroma / Smell
The aroma opens with soft wood tones before hint of dried cherries, vanilla, and caramel.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
The palate has a creamy mouth-feel with notes of caramel-corn, plenty of butterscotch, toasted oak, mueslix, and a dash of pepper.

Finish
The finish is medium-to-long, lightly sweet, and dry.

Day 4 Chicken Cock

Mellow, smooth, no burn, not complexed, not remarkable, second the Heaven Hill. Perhaps a good choice for someone's first option exploring bourbons/whiskeys.

My Favorite so far

I poured into one cup and swirled to release the aroma. I was not disappointed. The taste was refreshing, and the finish was smooth with a hint of vanilla and corn (tasty).
