The mamas & the papas of California craft.

California, the land of dreamers, where the Pacific kisses the shore and mountains reach for the sky. It's a place where deserts blush at sunset and vineyards stretch like an artist's canvas. This Tasting Box is a music box dedicated to the Golden State and its diverse landscapes. It's the rhythm of the coast, the harmony of the mountains, and the ballad of the desert distilled into three unique Whiskey samples.

Rod & Hammer's SLO Stills Cask Bourbon Whiskey strums the chords of a "surfer cowboy", an ode to the endless California Summer. It’s an uncut and non-chill filtered cruise down the Pacific Coast Highway, surfboard riding shotgun, the salty breeze playing with your hair, and a beach bonfire waiting for you at dusk.

High in the Sierra Nevada foothills, a mountain symphony is crafted, called the Hinterhaus Distilling Calaveras Cask Finish Bourbon. Brewed with glacier-fed waters and aged in a variety of local Wine casks, this is a tribute to California's Winemaking heritage and the perfect encore to a day of high-altitude adventures steeped in regional flavors.

With Joshua Tree Distilling Company's Lost Horse Whiskey, the Mojave desert sings in your glass. It's a Spirit as vast and mystical as the desert itself, whispering tales of the Old West and revealing secrets of the arid landscape. It’s the perfect accompaniment to exploring the rocky terrain, getting lost and found in the desert's mesmerizing beauty.

Nothing better to transport you to the land of dreams and diversity on a winter’s day (or any other day for that matter).

Smartass Corner:

1) California is home to the tallest (Mount Whitney) and the lowest (Death Valley) points in the contiguous United States, showcasing its diverse geographical landscape.

2) The Golden State produces 90% of all Wine in the U.S. and if it were a separate country, it would be the fourth largest Wine producer in the world.

3) California's Napa Valley, one of the most renowned Wine regions globally, has more than 400 Wineries and grows over 30 different grape varieties.

4) The state has one of the highest concentrations of craft distilleries in the U.S., with over 160 scattered from San Diego to Mendocino and at least 20 of them are in the Tri-Counties.

5) The craft distilling industry in California has seen a significant revival since 2015, thanks to changes in legislation that have made it easier for small-scale distilleries to operate, such as selling bottles directly to consumers at their tasting rooms.

6) Joshua Tree National Park, home to Joshua Tree Distilling Company, is named after the unique Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia), a type of plant native to the southwestern United States, particularly found in the Mojave Desert.

7) "California Dreamin'" is a song by The Mamas & the Papas, released in 1965. It's one of their most popular hits, reflecting the longing for the warmth of California during a cold winter.

8) Bourbon rules refer to manufacturing methods rather than location. Bourbon must be matured in new and charred American white oak casks for at least 2 years. If the bottle has no age statement, the Bourbon is at least 4 years old. No coloring or flavoring of any type is allowed, and the mash bill must contain at least 51% corn.

9) Sure, Kentucky gets all the press when it comes to Bourbon. And with good reason—nearly 95% of it is produced there. But Bourbon can be made anywhere as long as it’s within the United States.

Mixed blessings

Sample them in ABV low to high order, NOT A-C in our received order!
Joshua Tree was middle of the road. JUst plain nice...
Rod and Hammer's was like tin or iodine. My tasting partner did not finish
so I took one for the team. ;-)
Hinterhaus certainly needed to be cut a bit @ 56% and was delightful.
It would be great in a cocktail with its consistent and long lasting taste.
