A Bourbon that is more than wheated — delivering smoothness, fruit, and creamy toffee.

Old Elk Distillery is not "just" another start-up operation in Colorado. Serial entrepreneur Curt Richardson launched the dream seven years ago in Colorado Springs. And he has his right-hand man — Luis Gonzalez — as CEO. They’re both great guys, but Curt knows that a successful business is built on the talent of the team, and that’s why he recruited Greg Metze who worked at… ahem, a certain prolific distillery in Indiana (what is now MGP) for thirty-eight years, rising to the position of master distiller. That’s a team you can build a company on, and the result demonstrates their success.

Old Elk Straight Wheated Bourbon is for those who want things smooth. The mash bill is 51% corn, 45% wheat, and 4% malted barley. That is about as high-wheat as you can get. It’s aged five years in new oak and bottled at a PERFECT 46% ABV. And while we love all those stats, it’s the taste that matters, and this dram delivers.

We all know that rye delivers the spice and wheat delivers the smooth, right? But this is not a "tame" Spirit. It is pungent and flavorful and alive. But the profile leans more toward peaches and cream. Wheat lovers, this is the Gold Medal dram you’re looking for.

About The Flavor Spiral

What does Old Elk Straight Wheated Bourbon taste like?

The Flavor Spiral™ shows the most common flavors that you'll taste in Old Elk Straight Wheated Bourbon and gives you a chance to have a taste of it before actually tasting it.

We invented Flavor Spiral™ here at Flaviar to get all your senses involved in tasting drinks and, frankly, because we think that classic tasting notes are boring.

Tasting Notes

Appearance / Color
Mahogany Library

Nose / Aroma / Smell
The aroma is classic for wheated Bourbon with toffee and caramel, but has overtones of marzipan and warm florals.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
The palate is smooth and silky with notes of almond praline, English toffee, vanilla creams, baked peach, nutmeg, and clove.

The finish defines smooth satisfaction.
Ratings & Reviews
Smooth bourbon with full taste. Big fan!
Smooth and well balanced. Hint of spice and plenty of oak.
I was between this and Knob Creek 9year 120 proof. I wish I went with the latter. I enjoyed Weller Reserve, Weller Antique 107, and Jefferson’s Special Wheated (V22). So, I thought (even based on the spiral) that I would like it. Nah. I put it on the bottom shelf. The smell was pleasant and inviting, but the end of the taste before the finish drive me away. It was definitely nutmeg forward and I didn’t like the clove or peppercorn taste. On the positive note, the initial taste was sweet and soft in the mouth (similar to Buffalo trace), which I love. I will continue giving a 4th and 5th chance, but it is not something I will grab and be excited about. Also, the price is high for what it is. I would rather overpay for Weller Reserve.
Smooth, mild, sweet, rich. Love it.
Decent, but not good enough to purchase again for the same price.
Fruit and leather off the nose with a creamy smoothness that I cant resist.
Fantastic smooth drinkability. Smells sweet but doesn’t taste overly so. Pepper flavor without the aftertaste.
