Member Reviews and Ratings of Johnnie Walker Red Label
JW makes this for mixing, not for sipping. As such, it deserves a little more credit than it gets. Great in a Rob Roy or in a scotch Old Fashioned. With the price in mind, and taking into account the purpose for which this whiskey is made (mixing), this is a great value.
Good for mixed drinks, no straight.
I will drink this on the rocks, cut with tonic water and lime. I prefer JW Black label as the red tends to be more peppery. I find the Black label to be smoother.
My Scotch of choice...good price point
It was ok, not bad, but not my favorite.
To be fair, this is only the 2nd scotch I have tasted, with Macallan 12 being the other. I was not a fan.
Tastes like burnt ash, terrible, can't even mix it....
this scotch is fine; however I prefer my glenlevit
Good ever day blend, little smokier than other less expensive blends
Consistent and easy-going blend. Perfect with sparkling water.
Appearance: Color is amber, decent legs... Nose: Mild peat, Malted barley, cream, vanilla. Nothing offensive, but offensively muted. Needs to either bring the peat more or have other notes... Palate: Dry smoke on front of palate. Very trace bright fruit note. Midpalate is vanilla malt with some sweetness... Mouthfeel: Average... Finish: Faint linger of dry smoke and peat spice... Overall: Definitely not bad for the price, but also priced where it is for a reason.
To smoky. Maybe with cola?
Adequate for occasions I don't deem special. Because of the price, I don't feel the need to save it, but it's the only scotch I don't drink neat if that tells you anything.
Classic good value blend, slightly smoky but bitter aftertaste. A relatively smooth blend.
Not fan on the rocks. Only way I've found that I like it is with ginger ale and lemon juice.
I think this is one of the most under appreciated whiskies out there. You like cheap smoky scotch? Take Red Label. Neat may not suit your tastes, but taking it with a large ball of ice does wonders.
Love it as a mixer. I enjoy the lingering smoky notes at the end.
It’s...ok I guess
Cheap for a reason. Not terrible but not great. Keep a bottle on hand for the old Uncles that come over and want a scotch soda.
Smoky scotch that's fine for mixing. My recommendation would be to pass on the red label and upgrade to the black if you want to stay in the JW line.
Cheap scotch - not for sipping.
A bit on the extremely smokey side for my liking.
A cheap whisky
It's a great mixing scotch goes with some mineral water and a large cube of ice.
Get what you pay for, cheap but available scotch. Should choose black label over this
This is my go-to, everyday, affordable scotch. It's not Lagavulin, but it doesn't cost as much either.
A bit rough, but enjoyed it on the rocks
Pretty mild comparatively and honestly prob one if my more preferred labeled of the blend JWs.
Smokey, tannin, fruit, medium finish
Harsh to drink and be prepared for hangover
Alright. Not really great for sipping
Almost unable to drink on it's own, mostly followed it with cranberry juice and was thankful when it was gone (whisky is still whisky at the end of the day)
Harsh on the initial taste but has a lot of flavor. Not as smooth as others in the Johnny line.
Decent for a daily drink. Good value.
Wasn’t expecting much, but I actually enjoyed it. Not as good as JW Black but I’d definitely drink it again. Nice change of pace
I have always enjoyed Johnny Walker Red. There is a reason it is one of the most popularly selling blended scotches. This one will not be the best you've ever had, but it's not supposed to be. It's affordable for those that like to have a bottle with less rationing on the mind. I find this nice and try with pleasant notes of sawdust.
Good for drinking if you're drinking to get drunk.
great mixing scotch. lots of complexity but not too much "smoke" to turn off those new to scotch.
Fun to mix into cocktails, one of the first whiskies I had as a young man
This isn’t a great scotch but it’s better than I expected. The smoky flavor then fruit flavor is appealing but the finish is weak/non-existent.
I know everyone thinks of this as the low brow scotch that should be used only for mixed drinks, but for a very affordable everyday scotch, I enjoy it. It’s reliable and tasty to me. For special occasions I prefer the much nicer stuff though.
Intended to be mixed in cocktails. That's about all it is good for.
Entry level, just above a status of mixed drink only use. All Johnnie has the same base flavor of spice and some honey. Long spicy finish.
Ew...maybe mix it
Not very good. Very bitter
Its what you keep in the car for when you run out of gas.
Like drinking soggy lumber. Just awful.
Excellent budget scotch if you like a peaty smokey taste. Great as a sipping drink and tastes much better than many pricier scotch whiskeys.
Not a fan like red food coloring in water
Not super fancy but if your in a mood it keeps you from drinking all of your good stuff
good for scotch and sodas
Good, but on the dull side.
Not a smooth as i was expecting.
Ok but not a favorite
Wasn’t a fan. I could even finish a glass.... it was gutter trash
Recht guter Standard Whisksy mit genau jener gaanz leicht torfigen Note die ich mag
08/18 - Jasper
A lot of alcohol for the money but lacking in taste and quality
Comes off with a metallic taste on its own. Better if mixed in cocktails.
My go-to if I need something cheap, yet satisfying to mix with coke.
Mixer, have also used for cooking-both for flavoring food and a little something for me at the same time...
I really enjoy this one. It's smooth. Great on the rocks or off.
A lil bit of smoke-peaty, tangerine and apple. Smells really sweety ( brown sugar)
Perfect for cocktails or mixing
Not pleasant to drink.
Bleh. I thought, "maybe its like a cheap version of the black." I'll be saving this one for guests. Lol.
My go to scotch.
Red Label is not meant for drinking neat, but there is nothing better as a mixer. Red Label and ginger ale, sprite, or 7up is phenomenal. It will also make excellent cocktails. It does what’s its supposed to do very well.
good but spicy bitterness on the finish that lingers
Disliked it. Too petey.
Smells cheap and tastes cheap. Just get JW Black Label.
A pretty great whiskey to get started with. Has a touch of smoke/ peat. Reminds me of tequila
Just rough. Not much else to say.
Better for washing wounds.
Utterly disgusting. I’ve tasted liquor made in somebodys bathroom that tastes better than this.
A decent Scotch, more oak than sweet.
It's a fine, smooth, peat free scotch.
This is good when friends come over and we are just chillin
It is nice...with chocolate ice cream for a Don Pedro.
Erg simpel, weinig body. Misschien om te mixen
No match against the black. I can't imagine you prefer to have two bottles of these above one black. And even if you do not want to pay more than € 20, there's better on the market!
Standard for on the rocks.
Good for mixing with coke, not much more.
One of my go to when I was in Beijing.
Ok mixing whisky if you need to supply the masses
Good in a pinch!
It took me 20years to get halfway through a bottle... So only drink it in a mix, or share it with people you do not really appreciate ;)
A bit of funk on the nose that I don't appreciate but others might.
Gasoline for mixing only
Быстроиграющий. В нём как бы всё есть, но быстро проходит. Послевкусия почти никакого. Больше для пьянок, чем для смакования. С колой, наверное, самое то.
Voor in de mix met ginger ale
It's not black and green. Good for mixing not much else.
