Another incredible story of a Bourbon poured in a glass and shaped by the sea.
Jefferson’s was founded in 1997 by Trey Zoeller and his father Chet — a famed Bourbon historian who wrote the book on Kentucky distilleries. Yes, an actual book called "Bourbon in Kentucky: A History of Distilleries in Kentucky." And eight generations ago, their great-great-grandmother was arrested for the "production and sales of Spiritous liquors" in 1799. Which makes her the coolest ancestor ever! They acquire and produce a range of specialty Bourbons and Rye Whiskies. In 2007 Jefferson’s was sold to Castle Brands to build upon their portfolio of premium Spirits.
Each limited edition release of Jefferson’s Ocean "Aged At Sea" series is different. The Bourbon is aged literally at sea in the hold of a research vessel. The route, the temperatures, and tossing of the sea are different. And they experiment with different mash bills, distillations and woods too. Jefferson’s Ocean Aged At Sea Voyage 20 is the current release. It’s different from previous releases because it starts with a blend conventionally aged Bourbon seven and eight years old. They are married and "finished at sea." The blended Bourbon has visited five continents and crossed the equator four times before reaching port and being bottled at 45% ABV.
What does Jefferson's Ocean Aged At Sea Voyage 20 Bourbon taste like?
The Flavor Spiral™ shows the most common flavors that you'll taste in Jefferson's Ocean Aged At Sea Voyage 20 Bourbon and gives you a chance to have a taste of it before actually tasting it.
We invented Flavor Spiral™ here at Flaviar to get all your senses involved in tasting drinks and, frankly, because we think that classic tasting notes are boring.

Bourbon must be made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn.
Delicious stuff. I can taste some sweetness upfront and maybe some a caramel, a bit savoriness from the sea.
Aaron,
Incredibly smooth with complex flavor notes.
Steve,
Love the taste, for me it was smooth and no bite afterword's.
Kyle,
Jefferson’s Ocean never disappoints. Voyage 20 is my favorite since 13.
Andrew,
Really enjoyed this one. Nice and smooth. For the price point was expecting maybe something a bit more but I would buy it again in the $60 range. Not the 100+ it currently is at on here
guest,
Good, but not great. Leaves an aftertaste I can’t quite put my finger on.
John,
Not a fan
Mark,
Overall a good bottle. Over priced in my opinion
Matthew,
Delicious. Very strong with the toffee flavor but not overly sweet.
guest,
My absolute favorite
Paul,
Love Jefferson’s reserve.
Sean,
Honestly, this is the best Bourbon I have had to date. $65 and on par with much more expensive bottles.
Steven,
By far my favorite.
Bruce,
Not a bad bourbon, but you can get two better bottles for the price.
It is a nice bottle to have and to tell the story, but the drink itself is pretty flat and uneventful.
It is very soft with your typical bourbon caramel and vanilla with some oak finish but that is about it.
There is very little bite, but I couldn't find much subtlety neat and a drop of water didn't open it either.
Too expensive and too weak to even try to make a cocktail with it because it would get overpowered.
It will be on the shelf to share with friends and have the experience of the story, but kudos to Jefferson's on the marketing ;)
Stanley,
Smooth. The brine stood out to me, which was unique, and the right amount of sweetness.
Ryan,
Just amazing

Surprised by complex yet smooth taste. Finish is longer than expected. Quickly becoming a favorite.

Great neat with a long finish of briny ocean. Was worried this was a gimmick but it’s by no means so.
Jason,
Easy drinking. Great value.
Jeff,
Salty, fruity, smooth
Rob,
Very smooth and you can smell the salt when you open the bottle.
Zac,
Interesting salt flavor on the front end, with a smooth and sweet finish.
Dominik,
Sweet finish, great caramel
Jackie,
One of best Bourbon I have had!
guest,
My go to
Mike,
Excellent
Steven,
Awesome!
Ron,
It’s good not great. Not a good value for the price.
Prefer lots of single malt scotches in that price point.
John,
Really good neat! Or even to make special Old Fashions
Tony,
Drink it on ice with no food to cloud the pallet. First tried after goat-truffle cheese crackers and did not like it. Straight up on ice with no flavor compromises and it’s wonderful after all
Connor,
A unique salt and smoke taste that finishes with a dessert like finish of caramel and toffee.
April,
What a great nose... every sip was was a sweet and delicious pleasure. It’s sweet, but salty, oak toffee flavors just leave your tongue bursting with true excitement. Definitely worth every penny for that true whiskey drinkers experience. Most definitely do cut or chase, enjoy it neat with a nice fine tuned cigar if need be. While relaxing after a hards day of work or play.
guest,
Fresh crisp refreshing bold
Craig,
Too spicy for my pallet
Eric,
Excellent! Sweet notes and finish coupled with slight saltiness makes this a very tasty bourbon
Linda,
Great finish on this one. Loved it.
Christopher,
I just received this bottle and I tried it right away. Some people (the haters...lol) told me this was a "gimmick" and overpriced (though they never actually tried it themselves). Boy, I disagree, and they are missing out! Voyage 20 is the first Jefferson's Ocean Aged Bourbon I tried, it CERTAINLY impressed me, and am now curious to try others. I found the flavor profile to be on point. It was HEAVENLY smooth, and had a sweet mouth coating feel that was so enjoyable. The finish was sweet with some nice citrus notes. I think I need another bottle STAT! I will now compare this with the Rum cask finish (as I enjoyed both).
Juan,
Nice and smooth
Jackie,
Very smooth & refreshing.
Brett,
Great aroma and liked the start. The finish is a little "off" to me. I can't identify the flavor but it lingers a bit too long for my taste. I was expecting more based on the reviews and price.
Samuel,
Love it smooth and easy to drink love the taste glad I tried this Ill be sure to buy it again
Brian,
best nose, best taste I've ever had! An absolute MUST try for a true whiskey drinker. Very impressed
Gene,
Wow,great nose... sipping pleasure. It’s sweet oak toffee with a great lingering finish. Definitely a must try . One of the best I have tried, highest rating I gave out so far.
Jonathon,
Solid bourbon kissed with the salinity if a Talisker or Oban. Really cool change of pace from your go to bourbon. It’s a new staple in our bar.
Richard,
To those TRUE whiskey drinkers out there, you haven’t had the most delicious bourbon on your lips until you’ve tasted the infamous Jefferson’s Ocean aged at sea (Voyage 20). This has the best nose, the best taste and the absolutely longest lasting finish I have ever poured into my mouth. I have tasted hundreds of whiskeys. For anyone reading this review, stop wasting your time deciding if this is a good whiskey to add to your home bar. Just do it. But don’t you dare add water or ice. Just pour a very small amount in a proper whiskey glass, swirl to allow a decent vortex so the “Harshness” can escape and take the slightest sip you can and keep that on your tongue and enjoy. If you’re new to the wonderful world of whiskey, just make sure you share with someone that has some experience so you can enjoy this whiskey properly.
Cheers!
Brent,
This is my first Ocean Voyage...it's been hard to find for me. I like it. not super deep, and I'm not sure I pick up the salt notes from the caramel forward flavor or my subconscious due to the ocean relation. Either way I'd try more!
