The Original Gosling.

The story of Goslings Rum dates back to 1806 when James Gosling, who was sent out to the sea by his father, headed towards Virginia, with 10.000 pounds Sterling worth of Wines and Spirits. After 91 days, the charter on the ship Mercury James had to settle on Bermuda, where he opened a Wine and Spirits shop.

James Gosling returned to England in 1824 to open a shop with his brother Ambrose, a shop the Goslings maintain to this day. Their first Rum was produced decades later, in 1863, called the Black Seal — Rum that is synonymous with Bermuda, where it's produced. Today, the 7th generation Goslings lead the family business, in Bermuda, and are the largest exporter of any Bermuda-made product, as well as the only company that blends and bottles on the island.

Goslings Black Seal Rum consists of distillates that were aged independently in ex-Bourbon casks. They have been triple-distilled using a combination of pot stills and continuous stills, and blended together according to the secret family recipe from the 1850s. The generations of experience has resulted in a Rum of exceptional quality and they have earned multiple awards to prove it — including a Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, among several other platinum and gold wins. The Black Seal is great to sip with a cigar or mix with various cocktails.

Smartass Corner
The name comes from the black wax they used to seal their 'Old Rum' champagne bottles. Try it with their signature Dark ‘n’ Stormy cocktails: 2 oz. Gosling’s Black Seal Rum, 1 oz. Lime Juice, 0.5 oz. Sugar Syrup, Gosling’s Ginger Beer. Shake ingredients except ginger beer with ice and strain over ice into a highball glass. Top with ginger beer and garnish with a lime wedge.

Justin
Justin,
Almost too much flavor, but good if you don't mind overwhelming whatever else your drinking it with

Steve
Steve,
First, I love dark rum. This is a good one for both sipping and mixing. The after taste is not a very harsh bite, so it goes down wonderfully. The only thing that keeps me from giving a 10 is the heavier than most molasses after note, but that is a personal taste preference

Paul
Paul,
Heavy Molasses flavor light on the spice. I find this great for sipping or mixing with ginger beer.

Richard
Richard,
Good to mix not to drink straight

Jason
Jason,
I like this one in dark and stormys. Don’t drink a ton of rum but this one does the job.

A little too much neat, but fantastic in a Dark 'n' Stormy

Solid cheap rum. A good addition to any home bar. You can taste the ginger, ginger beer, licorice, lime juice, and a hint of cinnamon.

Ronald
Ronald,
SURPRISINGLY good - particularly for the price. If you like Rum that has actual rum FLAVOR and not because it will quickly get you rip-snorted, this one is hard to beat. You can sip it neat but not too pricey to feel guilty about mixing with it (I like it half-and-half with spiced rum, then top with Coke - for COLD winters it recently edged-out Meyers for Hot Rum Toddys)

Nicholas
Nicholas,
This is my go-to dark rum. It's not terribly distinctive on it's own. Pretty good but not completely outstanding. I'm giving it a slightly higher rating due to its versatility. This is rum meant to be mixed.

Alec
Alec,
Spices all around. Nutmeg and maple are very front and center followed by a calming cinnamon. Brown sugar echoes the maple flavor. Usually I love Zacapa 23 but this narrowly edges out ahead of it.

Simeon
Simeon,
Superior for the dark and stormy!
