Bernheim Original deserves a spot in your heart and your liquor cabinet.

Bernheim Original is a product of Heaven Hill Distillery. Founded in 1935, Heaven Hill is a major producer of premium spirits located in Bardstown, Kentucky — the “Bourbon Capital of the World.” While most large distilleries are owned by international conglomerates, Heaven Hill is owned by a relatively small investor group controlled by the Shapira Family. A long list of spirits and brands are produced there, but American Whisky and Bourbon are by far the most important.

The first thing you need to know about Bernheim Whiskey is that it is a wheat Whiskey — meaning that the mash bill is at least 51% wheat. The rest is a corn, rye, and a dash of barley. Like most Wheat Whiskies, Bernheim is considered to be a soft Whiskey with less spice and a lighter, smoother palate. Bernheim is aged a full seven years in charred new oak and you will notice that it is a bit less sweet than most American Whiskies. It is definitely an award-winning dram that gets lost sometimes in the current Bourbon and Rye craze sweeping the market right now.

What does Bernheim Original taste like?

The Flavor Spiral™ shows the most common flavors that you'll taste in Bernheim Original and gives you a chance to have a taste of it before actually tasting it.

We invented Flavor Spiral™ here at Flaviar to get all your senses involved in tasting drinks and, frankly, because we think that classic tasting notes are boring.

Rye Whiskey is made from mash that is at least 51 percent rye. The grain gives Rye Whiskey its spicy, sometimes peppery, and bitter flavor. It was a big seller before Prohibition, and after decades in obscurity, it’s fashionable again. Fun fact: George Washington distilled Rye Whiskey at Mount Vernon.

Ratings & Reviews
Rob
Rob,
Great wheat whiskey. Very smooth and great flavors.

Greg
Greg,
Did not care for this at all. At best I would use it for a mixed drink but it’d odd to taste good at all. I may just pour it down the drain

Chris
Chris,
Easy on the nose - floral with slight smoke. Sweet and strong taste that lingers a little. Good but not great.

Tyler
Tyler,
Very smooth. Great everyday whiskey. Can’t beat the quality for the price.

Frank
Frank,
I love heaven hill products, but this one was lackluster. Wouldn’t buy again. Will use as a base for mix drinks.

Philip
Philip,
6/10 overall, but 8/10 for the price point. Floral and sweet nose. Finish is caramel and cinnamon.

Steven
Steven,
Delicious!

Jonathan
Jonathan,
Minty and refreshing with noticeable wheat and a touch of dates. Finish leaves more mint, but warms the mouth and is nice and clean. Born in 1848 just outside of Kippenheim, Germany, Isaac Woolfe Bernheim emigrated to the United States when he was a teenager with just $4 in his pocket. He originally planned on taking a job in New York City, but when his employer filed for bankruptcy, Bernheim was forced to find another line of work. He eventually became a travelling salesman, selling housewares to families in Pennsylvania on horseback. When his horse died, though, Isaac and his brother, Bernard — who had just emigrated to the United States himself — moved to Kentucky. Together, they purchased Pleasure Ridge Park Distillery in 1896 and renamed it Bernheim Distillery Co. During Prohibition, theirs was one of only ten distilleries permitted to remain open and produce whiskey for medicinal purposes. Bernheim Original Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey is one of the first truly original straight whiskies produced since Prohibition. Since its primary grain is winter wheat (as opposed to corn or rye), the whiskey has a soft, sweet flavor profile yet a more complex body. The mash, which includes corn and malted barley, is distilled at its namesake distillery in Louisville, Kentucky and then aged for five years in the rickhouses of Heaven Hill in Nelson County, Kentucky.

Clayton
Clayton,
Had to try the 7-year wheat, and it didn’t disappoint, just prefer the higher corn mash bill of a bourbon. Cherry cola notes upon cracking the bottle, and big wheat flavor at first sip, because of course.

guest,
Wonderfully gentle on the nose, with wheat, a slightly charred oak, peppery spice and vanilla/caramel sweetness coming through. The palette is equally enjoyable. Wheat fades into a nice toasted charred oak (not its not so strong that you feel like you’re chewing on a piece of wood). Peppery spice hits the sides of my tongue as well as a very faint cinnamon before mellowing out into a sweet caramel vanilla note that lingers on the finish. Finish is mellow; this isn’t a whiskey that bits. It does leave you with the pleasant taste of what are traditionally bourbon notes. A great underrated wheat (and inexpensive!) to add to your collection. One of my favorites—as you can tell. :)

Nicholas
Nicholas,
Very smooth and mellow with a sweet finish.

Joseph
Joseph,
Was a lot hotter than I expected and not a whole lot of flavor. Might be a good mixer but is to medicinal tasting to be enjoyed near.

Kenneth
Kenneth,
Sweet and smooth. Not a robust mouthfeel but a good sipper on ice.

Michael
Michael,
not bad. sweeter than expected

Luke
Luke,
Spicier than expected but good

Gavin
Gavin,
It’s very interesting. You hardly think of wheat as imparting any flavor to wheated bourbons because they just allow the sweetness of the corn through. This is a complex and unique whiskey to enjoy neat. Very smooth.

Justin
Justin,
Way too Spivey and strong tasting. Not to my liking at all. All burn, no flavor.

Roy
Roy,
Nice flavor and surprisingly smooth

arne
arne,
very smooth, easy to drink, almost sweet, great for mixing, not interesting enough (imho) for drinking it straight up.

Justin
Justin,
Very warm and spicy. Not as smooth as Bulleit, but smooth with a longer burn and finish. Very long legs. It is buttery on the nose and I like that a lot. I can taste the cinnamon up front and at the long finish with the herbs coming on for an early visit the leaving like a good neighbor.

Kyle
Kyle,
Incredibly delicious. It’s sweet, but not too sweet, smooth, and full bodied. Fantastic whiskey.

Andrew
Andrew,
Very smooth and sweet. No sharpness or spiciness which makes it a nice, easy sip.

Kurtis
Kurtis,
Awesome!!! It explodes with light brown sugar, vanilla and slightly spiced. Highly recommended this whiskey for people who are just getting their whiskey on.

Eric
Eric,
This whiskey is easily one of the easiest-drinking whiskies in my collection. It is soft, mellow, and even my wife enjoys it if she feels like drinking whiskey.

Aaron

Extremely smooth, great tasting, a little bite on the end that's easily cured with a cube.
