The return of a classic Reposado flavor from an historic distillery.

The story of 7 Leguas Tequila is pretty interesting. The details are hard to pin down, but our sources say that the 7 Leguas Distillery in Atotonilco El Alto, Jalisco, was the original home of Patrón Teauila. They sold the brand to St. Maarten Spirits in 1989, but continued to produce the product. As Patrón grew, St. Maarten built a new distillery in 2002 to keep up with demand, and 7 Leguas is now producing their own line once again using the same tried-and-true methods of success. The Men’s Journal named 7 Leguas one of “The 18 Best Tequilas in the World.”

Given the history of the distillery, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that 7 Leguas Tequilas taste like the original, high-end Patrón Tequilas did back in their hay-days. 7 Leguas Reposado is made from 100% Blue Weber Gave. Importantly, some of the agave hearts — the piñas — are shredded in sugarcane mills and the rest are pressed in mule-driven tahonas (stone mills). This releases different sugars and natural oils, adding complexity to the Tequila. The spirit is aged in white oak casks for eight months, bringing smoothness and vanilla tones.

Smartass Corner:
7 Leguas Distillery is named after the famous horse owned by Mexican hero Pancho Villa. He named the horse “Siete Leguas” because the horse could run that far every day, showing exceptional stamina.

Great reposado

Aroma: cooked agave, citrus, oak and pepper. Very earthy

Taste: agave, cinnamon, grass, citrus, black pepper.

Finish: agave and citrus are dominant, lighter citrus notes.

Overall, a very approachable and enjoyable sipper. The blanco is my favorite but this is a close second. A solid buy at $55
