Rum from above the Clouds.

Ron Zacapa is named after a town in eastern Guatemala. Their plantation is located high on the volcanic plains of Retalhuleu, 1148ft (350m) above sea level. Most Rums use molasses as their base. In an effort to impart a sweeter and smoother flavor, Zapaca meanwhile uses only the concentrated first press of sugar cane, known as virgin sugar cane honey. When it’s time to start the fermentation, a strain of yeast extracted from pineapples is used, which produces unique aromatic compounds.

The Rum is then distilled at sea level in continuous column stills, before being moved higher into the mountains, where the maturation takes place. In the highlands of Quetzaltenango, 7,544 ft (2,300 M) above sea level, lies The House Above the Clouds. This stunning location – one of the highest aging facilities in the World – is where Zacapa slowly develops its complex flavor and character over time. Rums between 6 and 25 years old are used in the blend of Ron Zacapa XO. These Rums are then blended as they age in a sequence of barrels that previously stored robust American Whiskeys, delicate Sherries, fine Pedro Ximénez wines and are finished in French oak cask that previously aged Cognac. Talk about a fusion of flavors!

Smartass corner:
The lower atmospheric pressure helps intensify the infusion of flavors from the barrels.

Comment:
This is a huge, impressive, award-winning and showy Rum. Sip slowly and straight.

Eric
Eric,
Bought this as a wedding gift for my wife. She absolutely loves it. I’m told it’s flavors are perfectly balanced. Not to sweet and goes down really smooth, no harsh burn going down like most of the cheaper rums.

gregory
gregory,
I really like this rum! Sweet but spicy, the chocolate and caramel come through for me. We sip it after dinner as dessert. Would like it better for $20 less

Bill
Bill,
Everything good about the 23 solera without the bite. Pure and smooth, gives you all the great flavors without the bite. Recommend as a dessert drink, pairs well with a good cigar.

David
David,
Extremely tasty sipping rum; however I do not find it significantly better than standard Zacapa to warrant the price tag. Would never turn a bottle down though!

Eric
Eric,
The best rum I have ever had. So smooth you won’t be able to stop. You won’t ever want any other run after you try it .

Patrick
Patrick,
Liquid silk. It goes down so easy, it's very dangerous. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Clayton
Clayton,
Process complexity into a fabulous and still simple experience. The taste is complete with everything you expect from a classy rum but it still stands out. Loved it

Jonas

Very nice and good amount of complexity.

Chad
Chad,
Its decent but that's all I can say about it. Its very unmemorable.

Corey
Corey,
Very good rum, for the price however I would stick with the 23 solera. Ron Zacapa XO is incredibly smooth, like, the smoothest rum you will ever drink. But what it trades for its velvety smoothness is its flavor and I found myself impressed with the quality but also not really reaching for that second pour.

Steven
Steven,
I absolutely love this rum. It is so smooth and easy to drink that I can sit around all night just sipping on it. Best rum I've tried to date.

dan
dan,
Good flavor. Very mild. Good for just sipping by itself - neat - NO ice. I don't like my stuff watered down and ice would wash this one out in a hurry!

Barry
Barry,
Best rum I've ever had

Rodger,
Am I the only one who would compare some of the notes to amaro montenegro?

Joseph
Joseph,
The best of the rum tasting. Not too sweet and well balanced flavors. Great nose.

The Cadillac of rum

Mike
Mike,
The 23 is a solid offering. The XO is a little bolder, a little more complex, a little more sippable. Not sure I'd splurge on the XO over the 23, but I also wouldn't turn down an offered dram.

guest,
A delicious rum that is not too sweet yet great on the rocks. Can be used with a cola mixer as well. Try the Ron Zacapa Centanario 23 as well.

Matthew
Matthew,
Amazing rum, rich but very smooth. Expensive, and worth it!
