Susan gets our vote again.
The first small-batch distillery in Chicago since the dark days of the Prohibition era was founded in 2008 by Robert and Sonat Birnecker who abandoned their academic careers to follow their hearts. Growing up, Robert lived in Austria and was immersed in a culture of small-batch distilling, so this might just have been destiny. The distillery supports sustainable agriculture and is certified as both organic and kosher — there’ll be no outsourcing for these guys & gals. In less than 10 years they have expanded their miracle-working to just about everything from Gin, to Whiskey, to Liqueurs, and a bunch of other fiddly things, all of them professionally crafted and tasty-good. Cast aside all doubts, for they are rated as one of the top ten small-batch distilleries in the US.
Let's discuss this 'presidential candidate' business first. Susan was the aunt of co-founder Sonat and an artist through-and-through. True to her creative spirit, she at one time decided to campaign for President of the World — just as a gag, of course, having no real interest in politics and possessing a general dislike of bureaucracy. Susan for President Prune Brandy is the second release in the series that celebrates Susan's creativity as well as Robert's Austrian heritage. The 100% prune distillate is bottled at 86 proof and features a deliciously floral, nutty, and gently sweet profile.
