Pioneering charcoal filtration, Smirnov soon captured two-thirds of the market and became the favorite of the Russian clergy. But when the Russian Tzar nationalized the Russian Vodka industry in 1904, Smirnov was forced to sell the distillery. Can’t be forced to sell talent though, and when the Smirnov family fled Russia for Europe in 1917, his son Vladimir established another distillery, this one named Smirnoff, that to this day still filters and distills the same Vodka Pyotr pioneered for, only now triple distilled and 10 times filtered for extra smoothness and crispiness.
