A limited edition VSOP that expresses everything we love about Hennessy Cognac.
Hennessy is a giant in the world of Cognac. Jas Hennessy & Co. produces more than fifty million bottles of Cognac each year — more than 40% of the entire market. Interestingly, this most famous French company located in Cognac, France, was founded by an Irishman Richard Hennessy in 1765. The modern company produces nearly two dozen core spirits and many more collectors editions and limited releases as a subsidiary of Moët Hennessy, which in turn is owned in partnership by Diageo and LVMH.
Two hundred years ago, the Prince of Wales — who would become King George IV — loved fine Cognac. He personally requested a “Very Special Old Pale” from the House of Hennessy. The first bottles were delivered in 1818. Exactly two hundred years ago, and this V.S.O.P. elixir has been a mainstay of Hennessy ever since. To celebrate this bicentennial, Hennessy has created Hennessy 200th Anniversary VSOP Privilège Cognac. It is a blend of sixty carefully chosen eaux-de-vie that celebrates the terroir of Cognac and the heritage of Hennessy.
Smartass corner:
The VSOP acronym has been assumed to mean several things, including “Vey Superior Old Pale,” “Very Special Old Product,” etc. Hennessy claims “Very Special Old Pale” and they invented the category. Legally, VSOP refers to a Cognac blend where the youngest spirit has been aged in oak for a minimum of four years.
