Release the secret.
The story of the Gosling's Rum dates back to 1806 when James Gosling, who was sent out to the sea by his father, heading towards Virginia, with 10.000 pounds Sterling worth of wines and spirits. After 91 days the charter on the ship Mercury ran out and James had to settle on Bermuda, where he opened a wine and spirits shop.

James Gosling returned to England in 1824 to open a shop with his brother Ambrose, a shop the Goslings maintain to this day. Their first Rum was produced decades later, in 1863, called the Black Seal - a Rum that is synonymous with Bermuda, where it's produced. Today, the 7th generation Goslings lead the family business, in Bermuda, and are the largest exporter of any Bermuda made product, as well as the only company that blends and bottles on said island.

After 156 years Malcolm Gosling, the family's patriarch decided to let the old family secret out of the barrel and share it with the Rum-iverse. Gosling's Family Reserve Rum is created from the same blend of ingredients as their Black Seal, but aged longer in ex-Bourbon Oak barrels. The Family Reserve Rum is made in very small batches and is bottled as was used to be over a 100 year ago - in Champagne bottles and sealed with wax .

What does Gosling's Family Reserve Rum taste like?

The Flavour Spiral™ shows the most common flavours that you'll taste in Gosling's Family Reserve Rum and gives you a chance to have a taste of it before actually tasting it.

We invented Flavour Spiral™ here at Flaviar to get all your senses involved in tasting drinks and, frankly, because we think that classic tasting notes are boring.

A little bit of etymology; nobody really knows where the word Rum comes from. Most popular suggestions are: Rum (the Romani word for potent), Rumbullion (an uproar), Saccharum (sugar in Latin), Rummer (a Dutch drinking glass).

Tasting Notes

Appearance / Colour
Deep amber dark brown.
Smell / Nose / Aroma
Semi-sweet caramel, vanilla, oak, dried fruit and black tea. Hints of tobacco, plum and citrus.
Flavour / Taste / Palate
Sweet, heavy, tastes of wood, cherries, aged fruit and spice. Oily big molasses.
Slow, mellow and lingering. Hints of flavours reserved for Cognac.

Due to the age and complexity the Family Reserve is quite Cognac-like. Very sip-able.
