Founded in 1832
Being one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland, Glen Scotia is situated just at the very heart of Campbeltown.

Founded by the Galbraith family in 1832, Glen Scotia remained in the family until 1919, when it was sold to West Highland Malt Distillers. The company went bankrupt and a director from the company, Duncan MacCallum took over.

But things went south for MacCallum, after a dodgy business deal ruined his life, and he commited suicide by drowning himself in the Campbeltown Loch. Production resumed again in 1933, despite the setbacks through the years. In 2014 Loch Lomond Group bought the distillery, with a big investment.

Glen Scotia is a small scaled distillery. It has just one pair of stills which are 12,000 and 16,000 liters respectively. The onion shaped stills are short necked and wide, and their lyne arms are almost horizontal.

Glen Scotia buys its maltings from Greencore Maltings. Its American oak casks are put in a warehouse that can hold up to 7,500 casks.

Glen Scotia's standard bottling was a 14YO. However, it was exchanged with a 12YO bottle in 2015.

Glen Scotia is actually a town building, like the other Campbeltown distillers.

The unspoiled peninsula of the Campbeltown region used to be home to 34 Whisky distilleries, but now boasts only three coastal Whisky producers.

Despite the region’s contraction, the malts produced are fiercely enduring and distinctive. Wet wool, salt, smoke, fruit, vanilla and toffee are embraced, abandoned and cocktailed in the various malts of Campbeltown.

Hello, and welcome to where fine spirits meet. Today, I'm in Campbeltown at the Glen Scotia Distillery, and it was built in 1832, and today we will see what the Glen Scotia Whisky is all about.

The first step at Glen Scotia is the milling. The already malted barley comes here from the top and goes through four rollers in two stages and is milled down to a course grist. [inaudible 00:00:39] goes to the mash tun. Glen Scotia has peated and unpeated malt, and what they do is they have definite time intervals when the whole distillery produces peated spirits and other times when they produce unpeated spirits.

Behind me is the Glen Scotia mash tun. It has a capacity of 20,000 liters, and it is filled with 7,250 liters of water four times to wash out the sugar and the starch from the grist that came from the malt. After that, it goes off to the fermentation.

The Glen Scotia Distillery has nine fermenters. Three of them are located outside. They hold a capacity of 25,000 liters each. Glen Scotia uses two kinds of yeast to give the wash a fruity flavor that then ends up in the Whisky. Fermentation takes about three to five days, and after these days, you end up with a wash that has about eight percent alcohol by volume.

Behind me are the stills of Glen Scotia. This here is the wash still with a capacity of 11,800 liters. It does the first distillation and distills the spirits to about 20% alcohol by volume. The still itself is a bit younger. It comes from the '70s and that's because one of the valves got clogged, and this created a pressure situation that it was not designed for, and the wash still broke. It was replaced by the exact same shape as the one before to keep the distillery tech character at exactly the same level as before.

This here is the low wines and feints still also known as a spirits still. It has a capacity of 8,600 liters and distills the spirit up to 76% alcohol by volume.

...[inaudible 00:03:01] from the pot stills, goes through these pipes and goes down to the condensers. From the bottom, there comes cold water and rises and condenses the warm alcoholic fumes back into the spirits that becomes, then, the Whisky.

So I'm here at one of the warehouses of Glen Scotia, and this is the Dunnage Warehouse. Glen Scotia has three warehouses. One, of the traditional dunnage style and three layers, then we have [inaudible 00:03:31] warehouse and warehouse where the casks are being palletized. You can see how Glen Scotia labels their casks. You have distillery name, you have the year and then you have MP, and that stands for medium peat, so there is a medium-peated Whisky in here.

Here we have a cask that doesn't say MP, so that means we have a normal Whisky with no peat in here. People go around with a measuring stick to measure how much much fluid is still left in the cask and a Whisky thief to taste the Whisky if it's already ready for bottling.
