El Dorado Rum is also known as the ‘Liquid Gold of Guyana’. Demerara Distillers started in 1670 when every sugar estate in Guyana had its own Rum still and a group of sugar cane producers formed an exporting co-operative. This early production of Rum for sailors was the beginning of the Demerara. Guyana had as many as 300 producers at any given time over the years.

El Dorado 15 Year Old is something a little bit special. It was voted the Best Rum in the World at the International Wine & Spirits Challenge four years in a row. Hailed by virtually everyone in the Rum world as being out of this world, it truly is a crowd pleaser. It takes Rum to another level and away from some of the younger, less refined Rums out there.

Rum is why we measure alcohol proof. To make sure Rum wasn’t watered down, it had to be ‘proven’ by soaking gunpowder with it. If it was ‘overproof’ (higher than 57.15 % vol.), then the gunpowder would ignite, if it wouldn’t, it was ‘underproof’.

Ratings & Reviews
Matt
Matt,
Deep caramel notes. Smooth with pleasant sweetness. Vanilla and dark brown sugar notes.

Toni
Toni,
Rum is not my thing, but this was excellent!

John
John,
This is pretty incredible stuff. Bananas and butterscotch on the front giving way to some mild heat and vanilla from the oak. The finish draws out and lingers with demerara coming through.

Črt
Črt,
My first rum. I'm blown away..

David
David,
Appearance 🧐 ; A beautiful warm Dark Amber coloured liquid with a lot of legs along the glass, Nose 👃 ; Forest honey and full of ripe sweet fruits, Taste 👅 ; Complex syrupy flavours of caramel, milk chocolate, vanilla, roasted coffee, Finish 🇫🇮 ; Long, warm with brown sugar and a light tobacco, 10 / 10 🥃 All I can say is ; WOW 😍

Christopher
Christopher,
Nose: Molasses, a touch of plum, maybe some banana. The palate is much more plum forward that the nose. Let's call it prunes. There's also some brown sugar, with a caramel lingering on the side of my tongue. A decent sipping rum, but Flaviar butchered the description, listing the ABV at 43%. Nope, it's 40%. (They've since corrected it.) This would be a much better rum at 43% or 46%.

Diego
Diego,
Good price, very good

Raoul
Raoul,
Very nice, long aftertaste

João
João,
It's good, but a bit too sweet for my taste

Benjamin
Benjamin,
Very nice sipping rum. First taste was not indicative of the bottle. Once it opens up, it is very nice. Dark sweets, but not too sweet.

Bill
Bill,
Spicy but drinkable. Little bite of cinnamon and brown sugar

Todd
Todd,
One of the best runs in this price range. Well balanced.

John
John,
Best rum I’ve tasted. So smooth and full bodied and sweet

Robert
Robert,
It wasn't as sweet as the flavor profile let on. Prefer Plantation or Bumbu as a sipping rum. Doesn't seem to be too bad mixed with Coke or Dr.Pepper

Andrew
Andrew,
Good but not great

Robert
Robert,
Smooth with a nice molasses finish

Harrison
Harrison,
Great flavor. Reminded me of an oatmeal raisin cookie with a warm spicy finish in liquid form.

Antti
Antti,
It is an outstanding, rich, Demerara Rum with a thick & rich birth; while a syrupy life leads to a long & creamy death with notes of chocolate, fire, sweat spices & dark spices.

Aaron
Aaron,
Very sweet with lots of brown sugar, caramel, vanilla, and molasses. Flavor isn't artificial tasting, which is why I normally shy away from dark rum. Very tasty!

Stephanie
Stephanie,
Very sweet with brown sugar and Carmel. Had to mix with ginger ale to finish it.

Gregory
Gregory,
I didn't feel it was as sweet as everyone seemed to let on however very good rum.

Marcus
Marcus,
Very sweet and smooth rum

Angela
Angela,
Very brown sugary/molassesy. A little too much burn, but might be calmed with a little ice

Harry
Harry,
Very good sipping rum. Guyana has improved their rum production enormously. Not yet in contention with old amazing stablished premiums like Pampero Aniversario, Diplomatico, and Santa Teresa Solera from neighboring Venezuela, but El Dorado is a very good rum to enjoy with a mellow to medium-bodied cigar.

Alice
Alice,
Wow what can I say, this one astounded me. I never drink rum, as they tend to have a specific aftertaste I don't care for. This one though was just delightful. So much complex flavor, with lots of dried fruits and sherry on the tongue. Sweet finish but doesn't linger, leaving your mouth clean and wanting another sip. I'm adding a permanent spot in my home bar for this one.

Danny
Danny,
Lots of earthy tobacco flavors. Slight heat in the finish.

Jason
Jason,
This smells like classic rum, reminds me of a rum tobacco I used to smoke. Lovely fig Newton flavor that lingers long. Might gift myself some, but a bit heavy and expensive for my rotation

John
John,
Great siping rum. Loved the sweet (but not too sweet) taste and the slight bite at the end. Definitely a favorite.

Charles
Charles,
This is one of the smoothest, interesting drink I have had so far. I had to be careful not to get into the bottle. Then I realized I had almost finished half the bottle.

Ken
Ken,
A nice sipping rum, sweet but not overly sweet. For the price I would go with Ron Zacapa 23, but that is just me.

Scott
Scott,
Very nice, very smooth! Something I would definitely drink again!

Joe
Joe,
Just lovely. Maple syrup and honey with a subtle herbal touch? Sweet but not cloyingly so. Smooth but still structured; not a beanbag chair but a welcoming leather couch :-) This is a beautiful sipping rum. I tried this a few years ago before really appreciating rum and I’m so glad to have it again.

Brian
Brian,
Nice sweet rum. My kind of dessert!

Patrick
Patrick,
Very brown sugary/molassesy. A little too much burn, but might be calmed with a little ice

Charles
Charles,
I don't know much about rum, but this one impressed me. It's smooth flavour makes it one of my favourites on here so far. I can see why it won the 2019 awards.

Deja
Deja,
I’m not a rum drinker but I really enjoyed this one.

Sabrina
Sabrina,
Delicious. Received in a tasting box. “I don’t like dark rum”. Well apparently I just don’t like cheap off the shelf dark rum. Imagine dulche de leche ice cream in a glass. More please.

Katherine
Katherine,
So smooth! Worth every dollar

Israel
Israel,
I love this rum! I was introduced to it in Nassau during my honeymoon and is one of the smoothest rums out there, if not the king! It can be a bit sweet depending on your pallet, but an ice cube or whiskey stone can curtail it. Flavor of caramel and honey up front with a nice spicy / fruity finish.

Howard
Howard,
Very good sipping rum. Not the best, but very good. Too expensive to mix. A little sweet, smooth and not too much molasses flavor if you don't go for the heavier Rums.

Keith
Keith,
Very nice alone or with a mixer

Keith

This was my first love in rhums. Love that long and good aftertaste. Bought a bottle in 2006 and did fall in love the spirits of rhums! <3 This is a perfect match for a sigar smokers.

It got a bit spiced taste (what you feel in your throat), not the best I had, but also not bad

The best rum I have ever tasted. There is no need to mix anything into this rum. Very smooth.

Outstanding Demerara Rum. Cigar smoke, bittersweet chocolate, toffee, dried fruit, raisin, dates, brown sugar, vanilla, orange zest, American oak. Cognac like

Excellent for sipping and enjoying but the 8-year-old was a bit sweeter.
