All about Dufftown

As we have noted, there are only a few scattered independent bottlings to try and guage the flavor by - not exactly optimal. But generally speaking, the flavor profile of Dufftown Whisky is consistent with Glenfiddich across the way - light with no smoke and fruit-forward in the traditional Highland style.

All about Dufftown distillery

There is a bit of confusion about Dufftown Distillery, because there are nine distilleries located in the town of Dufftown. But this is the one actually named "Duftown."

Anyway... Dufftown the distillery is in Dufftown, about five miles east of the Spey River alongside Glenfiddich, Mortlach, The Balvenie, and five other tightly clustered Highlanders.

Dufftown is a production house owned by Diageo. Not much effort has been made over the years to give it a unique identity. It was founded in 1895, by two entrepreneurs from Liverpool, as the Dufftown-Glenlivet Distillery Co.

It was then acquired by Mackenzie & Co., and then another acquisition, and another merger, and another acquisition later... it is owned by Diageo. It used to be one of Diageo's largest production facilities, but others have vamped up, and newer distilleries have opened, so now it is a rather middling one by comparison.

The distillery was recently upgraded from an annual output of approximatley 4 million liters, to 5.8 million liters. Almost all of it goes into blends. A few independent bottlers have issued special single malt releases, but few and far between.

There was a 15 YO Flora and Fauna release, and Singleton issues from Diageo from time to time. But none of these can come close to being deemed a signature style in production. It is one of the primary components of Bell's famous blended Scotch.
