The Rum for Whisky lovers.

Don Andres Brugal Montaner launched Brugal in 1888 to break away from the traditional styles of the time and to create a distinctly different Rum. Apparently there are two things that set Brugal apart from others. First, the method of distillation, which removes much of what other Rums leave in. The Spirit is thus cleaner, dryer and less sweet. Secondly, every drop of Brugal is cask-aged, using the same wood policy as the World’s best single malt Scotch Whiskies.

Produced in the Dominican Republic, Brugal 1888 Rum is distilled for dryness - Brugal’s distillation removes many of the heavy alcohols that give other Rums their sweetness. Distilled from fermented molasses, this is a double-aged blend of Rums that were matured from 5 to 14 years in American white oak casks and finished in first-fill Sherry oak casks. Bringing together Bourbon and Sherry flavors, the notes of vanilla, red fruits, and toffee are supported by cocoa and natural oak spice. Think reinventing your Rum Negroni or Old-Fashioned or just sipping it neat to evoke all your senses.

Smells like weak rum to me. Opens with anise and molasses, and more wood notes than I think I want. Transitions to cinnamon and spice and finishes out with dark chocolate. I'm going to be a bit contrary to everyone else and say I don't like it. I get that the goal is to elevate rum into a stand alone sipper. There are other rums that pull it off. For me this goes in all the wrong directions and highlights flavors best left in the background

Vanilla and syrup aroma with a hint of bitter toasted coffee. Taste is almost whiskey-like. Oaky, smoky, and mildly bitter with an astringent tannin quality. Not what I'm looking for in a rum but I can see why other people would like it.

Very whiskey-like; smooth vanilla and oak, just a hint of rum sweetness.

A bit more balanced of a rum. It's sweet but not so much when you consider that it is, indeed, a rum. Spicy and dare I say almost oaky?
