Discover the Rye Whiskey that Helped Revive Cocktail Culture

From the Manhattan to the Old-Fashioned to the Sazerac, rye whiskey is an essential ingredient in many of the world’s most famous whiskey cocktails. But for decades, it was incredibly hard to find the spirit in most liquor stores and bars.

One of the greatest untold spirits stories is the launch of Rittenhouse Straight Rye Whisky in New York’s bars and how this bottled-in-bond liquor helped kick off the rebirth of the craft cocktail around the world.

In order to properly recount this amazing history we’ve gathered some of the world’s most-trusted whiskey authorities and famous bartenders: Dale DeGroff, David Wondrich, Noah Rothbaum, Joaquín Simó and Meaghan Dorman.

“I’m not sure that we would have had the same revival of cocktail culture if Rittenhouse Rye wasn’t available,” says Noah Rothbaum, Flaviar’s Head of Cocktails & Spirits.

For the first time, in this short documentary film, these legends share their memories of how the re-introduction of Rittenhouse Rye changed their world and how it continues to be a staple in craft cocktail bars today.
