A truly special and limited Rye dram with a wonderful apple influence.

In 2007, aspiring Whiskey-maker Raj Bhakta bought the farm — he actually purchased a plot of land in Vermont lovingly named Whistle Pig Farm. He teamed up with master distiller Dave Pickerell — formerly of Maker’s Mark — to bring genuine Rye Whiskey back to the forefront of American Whiskeys. It took a lot of time, patience, experimentation, and reinvestment, but they have grown to produce five award-winning core products and have experimented with a variety of finished wood special edition Whiskeys too.

The Whistle Pig Distillery actually has … ahem, "celebrity" pet pig named Mauve. Calvados is an aged Brandy made from Apple Eau de Vie. WhistlePig The Boss Hog V is the fifth edition of the a special Rye Whiskey — this time a thirteen year-old finished in Calvados casks. And the result is truly exceptional in a spicy American Whiskey with a decidedly apple influence bottled at cask strength of 58.4% ABV. Even the flask-shaped bottle is special with pewter stopper.

We love the humorous bent, but this is a darn good dram. This one’s special folks.

Smartass corner:
What the heck is a "whistle pig" anyway? Even though all Whistle Pig Whiskey labels are adorned with the sketch of a tuxedo-clad hog, a "whistle-pig," groundhog, and woodchuck all refer to the same animal.

What does WhistlePig Boss Hog Vth Edition: The Spirit of Mauve taste like?

The Flavor Spiral™ shows the most common flavors that you'll taste in WhistlePig Boss Hog Vth Edition: The Spirit of Mauve and gives you a chance to have a taste of it before actually tasting it.

We invented Flavor Spiral™ here at Flaviar to get all your senses involved in tasting drinks and, frankly, because we think that classic tasting notes are boring.

Tasting Notes

Appearance / Color
Baltic Amber

Nose / Aroma / Smell
This dram greets your nose with notes of warm harvest cider, ginger, pipe tobacco, leather, vanilla, and just enough Rye spice.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
Remarkably, the palate makes you imagine stewed pears with notes of oak and dark chocolate. Add a dash of water or cocktail ice and classic Rye spice and fruit jump to center stage.

Finish
The finish is long and complex with toasted oak and apple pie.
Ratings & Reviews
Nathan
Nathan,
I Think this is really good rye, but I don't enjoy it significantly more than a knob creek cask strength or a templeton rye which are 1/10th the price.

Brendan
Brendan,
Overpriced in my opinion. Very good and complex, although it was harder than I expected to pick out flavors from the calvados finish.

Scarlett
Scarlett,
Apple with the spice of rye. A beautiful dram.

guest,
I alternated between this and a Thomas H Handy 2018 to compare, and this release of Boss Hog won. It packs a lot of flavor, and the aroma is among the best I have encountered with any whiskey.

guest,
Wow. Just wow. The wonderful flavor profile with crisp apples, and hint of smoke and then that 58%!

Dave
Dave,
Worth every penny! So smooth and easy to drink. Amazing finish! Enough heat to know you have a well done bourbon but disappears among the flavors.

Byron
Byron,
Overpriced. Smooth and complex with several interesting flavor notes. I found the leather to be prominent and the oak and rye understated. It's definitely a good whiskey, but I've had bottles that I enjoyed more for 1/4 the price. Value is of course subjective and your mileage may vary.

David
David,
Smooth but complicated!

Nolan
Nolan,
Got this for my 50th birthday! It didn’t survive the evening! One of the best I have ever had!

Benjamin
Benjamin,
Not so impressed. Enjoyed a glass at a hosted sampling. The price is definitely not commensurate with the expectation. Flavors are smooth; with the Spice at the end, the oak finish is displaced by a hint of black walnut and fresh baked bread...probably the rye mash still lingering in the finish. The lesser whistle pigs significantly less weighty on the wallet and provide a reasonable experience.

Helen
Helen,
Super smooth. Very flavorful. Super high proof but goes down like silk.
