A seventeen year-old WhistlePig Rye masterpiece finished with two exotic woods.
In 2007, a band of dedicated Rye enthusiasts bought the farm — they actually purchased a plot of land in Vermont lovingly named WhistlePig Farm. They teamed up with master distiller Dave Pickerell — formerly of Maker’s Mark — to bring genuine Rye Whiskey back to the forefront of American Whiskies. It took a lot of time, patience, experimentation, and reinvestment, but they have grown to produce five award-winning core products and have experimented with a variety of finished wood special edition Whiskies too.
The Boss Hog editions are special experiments in wood and finishing. A few of us have the previous Boss Hog releases on our shelves at home — parsing them out with an eyedropper on special occasions because these things are always amazing. As the numerical naming implies, WhistlePig The Boss Hog VII: Magellan's Atlantic is first and foremost an incredible, high-quality, single barrel Rye Whiskey that has been aged for seventeen years. But then the masters at WhistlePig finish the Spirit by adding rare Spanish oak staves. But they’re not done, because then they cross the Atlantic (like Magellan) to finish it a second time with South American teakwood staves. Get your bottle now before the staff loses all self-control to raid the warehouse.
Smartass Corner:
Ferdinand Magellan was actually Portuguese. But he organized the Spanish expedition to navigate to the East Indies by heading West, thus becoming the first known to circumnavigate the globe, completing the journey in 1522.
