If David Landrum likes anything, that is Detroit and community and art and Spirits. (He is a guy of many likings.) After majoring in art history and studio art, he went on to mix cocktails and procure wines as a sommelier for 14 years before he finally decided to make Spirits of his own. They would be local and handcrafted and they would build a community around them. And the bottles would be a work of art.
Ten years after its foundation in 2012, the Two James distillery is all that and more. Located in a former taxi garage in Corktown, Detroit's oldest neighborhood, the distillery produces 11 specific handcrafted, environmentally-conscious made Spirits, all while utilizing mostly locally sourced agricultural products, therefore supporting local communities and making jobs. And the bottles are a work of art. Dreams do come true.
One of the 11 Spirits is Grass Widow Bourbon, named after an old Whiskey brand that produced Spirits in Detroit before Prohibition. This Bourbon is made from 58% Rye, 36% Corn, and 6 % Barley and aged for three years in new American oak-charred barrels before being finished in ex-Madeira casks. This craft Bourbon is smooth and spicy with some exceptional flavors of hazelnut and dried raisins, courtesy of that Madeira. This is a unique Spirit with a remarkable flavor profile and intriguing levels of complexity.
