American whiskey thrives on reinvention. While tradition provides the foundation, today’s leading distillers are expanding the category with bold ideas, regional identity, and creative maturation techniques. This collection brings together three producers who approach innovation in very different ways.

Westward Stout Cask Finish begins with their signature American single malt, brewed like a craft beer, distilled in Oregon, and aged in new charred oak. It’s then finished in local stout beer casks, infusing roasted malt, cocoa, and dark fruit into a rich, full-bodied pour.

Mary Dowling Tequila Barrel Finish Bourbon honors the woman who carried Kentucky whiskey beyond its borders. A Kentucky Straight Bourbon matured in toasted and charred American oak, it is finished in ex-tequila barrels as a deliberate nod to Dowling’s move to Mexico during Prohibition. The tequila cask imparts bright agave tones, citrus lift, and soft spice that complement bourbon’s caramel, vanilla, and oak, creating a cross-category expression that bridges bourbon tradition with global influence.

Frey Ranch Bottled-in-Bond Rye represents innovation through agriculture and transparency. Grown, distilled, aged, and bottled on the Frey family’s Nevada farm, this rye is crafted under Bottled-in-Bond standards and aged a minimum of four years. It delivers cinnamon, citrus, herbal notes, and bold rye spice, showcasing the power of estate-grown grain and disciplined maturation.

Together, these three whiskies highlight how American producers are shaping the future of the category, not by abandoning tradition, but by building on it with creativity and precision.

SMARTASS CORNER

  1. Westward Whiskey distills from a grain mash fermented with ale yeast, blending brewing and distilling traditions unique to the Pacific Northwest.

  2. Stout cask finishing is a technique borrowed from the beer world, known for adding roasted and chocolate-like flavors to whiskey.

  3. Westward was named “Craft Producer of the Year” at the 2023 Icons of Whisky Awards and has received Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

  4. Mary Dowling was a pioneering Kentucky distiller who relocated operations to Mexico during Prohibition to continue producing whiskey legally.

  5. Tequila barrel finishing introduces subtle agave and citrus notes that complement bourbon’s traditional caramel and vanilla profile.

  6. The modern Mary Dowling brand is produced at Rabbit Hole Distillery in Kentucky.

  7. Frey Ranch is a true grain-to-glass distillery, growing 100% of its grain on its Nevada farm.

  8. The Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897 was America’s first consumer protection law for spirits, requiring at least four years of aging and bottling at 100 proof.

  9. Frey Ranch controls farming, distilling, aging, and bottling on-site, a rare level of vertical integration in American whiskey.
