A delightful 100% Trinidadian Rum aged seventeen years in Bourbon barrels under the Caribbean sun.

We’ve heard a lot of origin stories in the Spirits business, so it’s hard to impress us these days. But the story of Marc Farrell is pretty darned impressive. He was born in the Caribbean Island of Trinidad and Tobago. At the ripe old age of sixteen he left to study chemical engineering… at MIT. He went on to get a Master in Philosophy from Cambridge and an MBA from some school called Harvard. At the age of thirty-three he became the youngest VP at Starbucks. Last year he stepped out on his own to launch a new Caribbean Rum brand "Ten to One," to develop a contemporary, elevated Rum experience. See what we mean? Impressive, right?

Ten To One 17 Year Old Single Cask Rum is the first "Reserve" limited edition they’ve released. There are only 1488 bottles in total, pulled from just four casks, individually bottled. To create this expression, Marc Farrell went back to his roots, acquiring Rum aged seventeen years in ex-Bourbon barrels in Trinidad & Tobago — where he was born. This delightful Spirit sparkles with flavor and has been bottled without added coloring or flavorings at 43% ABV.

Honestly I was expecting much ...

Honestly I was expecting much more. I am almost wondering if there was something wrong with this one. I have a Cask 4 bottle and on the nose it is pleasant, sweet, but you can tell its got a bit of a punch, but nothing of the nose really prepares you for the taste.

The taste, sadly, is all wrong. It has a VERY strong unpleasant flavor that reminds me of what turpentine and even gasoline smells like . It is not pleasant at all until that evolves brings in an oily pine tar and spearmint that does not help much because it keeps that turpentine underflavor throughout.

If this is representative of the best Ten to One has to offer, I am really disappointed.

I haven't had anything like this before. The apricot and papaya notes stand out the most to me. I will be holding onto this bottle for sipping on special occasions.
