Corby Spirit and Wine was founded in 1859. It is located in Corbyville, Ontario, Canada — a very small, rural town about 120 miles WNW of Toronto just off the north shore of Lake Ontario. The old, abandoned distillery building can still be found there. Today, Corby Spirit and Wine is based in Toronto, has more than 200 employees, and is closely aligned with mega-Spirits-giant Pernod Ricard who has taken a 46% ownership stake in the company. Corby produces several brands of Spirits and markets Pernod Ricard products in Canada.
The first edition of Lot No. 40 was actually designed back in 1998 by Master Blender Michael Booth: it was how Booth envisioned 100% Rye Canadian Whisky was made in the early days of 1920s when his ancestor Joshua Booth was making Whisky. He even named the Whisky after the plot of land that was given to him.
Today, Lot No. 40 100% Rye Whisky is created by Master Blender Dr. Don Livermore who altered the original recipe a bit based on his PhD findings. Made from unmalted Rye and aged in brand new American char No. 2 oak barrels and finished in new American oak char No. 4 barrels, this is a Dark Oak version of the Whisky. We’re not the only ones who think it’s pretty darn tasty as it’s already won Gold at the esteemed 2022 San Francisco World Spirit Competition and 96 points with a Gold Medal at the 2022 International Wine & Spirits Competition.
