The famous Glenfiddich Distillery was founded by Scotch Whisky legend William Grant in 1887 with used equipment acquired from the Cardhu Distillery. Remaining in the hands of the Grant family to this day, Glenfiddich is the biggest selling single malt whisky worldwide and can be found in quality pubs from Indonesia and Beijing to Morocco and Los Angeles. Not only are they a top producer of premium single malt by volume, they are a much honored and loved go-to Speyside of choice for millions of raving fans.
If you know your Single Malts, the first thing that you will notice is the striking black glass bottle — so remarkably unlike anything else Glenfiddich has done. Glenfiddich Grand Cru is indeed 100% their signature Single Malt aged a crazy twenty-three years. Most of the Spirit spent that time in ex-Bourbon casks, and a smaller portion in ex-Sherry casks. The Spirit is married and then finished in Cuvée oak casks from Champaign, France. The entire presentation from bottle to glass is worthy of a celebration.
Smartass Corner:
Most French Champaign producers ferment their Wines in stainless steel tanks — and seriously, there’s nothing wrong with that. But a few of the higher-end producers used large oak casks to bring a round, creamy palate with a dash of vanilla. We don’t know where Glenfiddich’s casks came from, but Veuve Cliquot, Bollinger, and Krug use this technique.
