Bulleit Bourbon 10 Year Old is nothing but tasty from the first shot.

Tom Bulleit comes from a family steeped in distilling fine Spirits. He set out to make his own mark in 1987 when he launched Bulleit Frontier Whiskey by reviving the old family recipe — Bulleit Bourbon — with a high-rye mash bill and a ton of attitude. Today they are a part of the Diageo portfolio producing a range of four Bourbons and one Rye Whiskey that have become the Spirits of choice for discriminating cocktail drinkers around the world.

Which brings us to today’s lesson in tasty awesomeness, a 10 year-old Bulleit Broubon. Now, the first thing you got to know is the mash bill. All of the Bourbons coming out of Bulleit Distillery Company are made from the same time-honored recipe: 68% corn, 28% rye, and 4% barley. There are no wheat or grain fillers, and every % point of that mix serves a specific purpose. The corn makes it sweet and savory, the rye adds some spice and body, and that dash of barley gooses the fermenting process just right.

Nothing else is needed, so nothing else is added.

Bulleit Bourbon is aged at least 6 years, but is famously "not bottled until it’s ready.” But for their 10 YO, those medium-char American white oak casks are left alone for a full decade and bottled at 45.6% ABV. Golly-Bob-Howdy Vern… That's some damn good sipping Whiskey right here! Somewhere along an ancient, hidden part of the Appalachian Trail the ghost of old Augustus is smiling wide.

I like this bourbon. It's not ...

I like this bourbon. It's not complex, but it's balanced and is a nice representation of a high-rye bourbon. It's surprisingly bright and lively (in a very good way) for a 10 year bourbon. If you like Four Roses Small Batch, but find Four Roses Single Barrel a little "heavy," try Bulleit 10 Year. Personally, I think Four Roses Single Barrel is an overall better bourbon (taste and price-wise). However, Bulleit 10 isn't too far from the mark. Just a little on the price-y side and a little too low on the proof for my tastes. If it were 100+ proof, or even better, cask strength at the same price, I'd make sure to always have a few bottles on hand.
