Welcome to join us in a toast to this fine Spirit.

You know that feeling when you taste a great Whiskey that takes over your mouthful and your whole mind-body and you think about how lucky you are that a delicious thing like that was granted to us by gods and you wonder if that’s a flavor that you yourself could match … well, Jason Jackson certainly does. A singer-songwriter from Colorado was so inspired by a glass of Knob Creek he tried to make his own Whiskey and it turned out… he can. When he passed samples out to two of his friends, they took one sip and they knew they had something special at hand. In 2013, they founded Axe and Oak Distillery, a place where crafty artisan Spirits are born and provides the time-space where folks can slow down, take a sip, and enjoy life.

The distillery's frontrunner is Colorado Mountain Bourbon Whisky, the first Spirit they presented and the Spirit that put the distillery on the map. The exact mashbill of this goodie is not disclosed, but we know it’s a high-rye blended Bourbon that’s easy to look at and even easier to drink. This Bourbon has been aged for 3 and a half years and has an Nr 3 Char, which means that once the angels and the devil have been paid their share, we’re left with a well-balanced Bourbon with a deep earthy and spicy flavor profile. Colorado Mountain Bourbon is bottled non-chill filtered and proofed with fresh Rocky Mountain spring water at 92 proof. A great sip.

Just Spicy Caramel

There is not much complexity to this bourbon. It's nose is lots of caramel. The taste is got some spice from the Rye, caramel and vanilla. It has a good long finish, again with that Rye spice. Overall, kind of bland.

My buddy and I tasted eight whiskeys last night. Rather than rate them specifically 1-8, we put them into three groups (although maybe it should be four; read on). Since I am a relative noob, I won't get into the nuances of each, flavor notes, etc. I'm just here to say where I think they rank.

Least favorite: Trader Joe's Kentucky Best Bourbon, Breckenridge Px Cask Finish Bourbon, Breckenridge Dad's Stash Reserve Blend Bourbon.

I'm really going to try to warm up to Breckenridge. I didn't DISlike it, but compared to the rest, it was a little bland, weak, and meh. The Trader Joe's bourbon is good for a cheap bottle of booze.

Mid-range: Blackened blended whiskey and Blackened Kentucky Rye.

Yep, those ones supposedly 'sonically enhanced' by Metallica music. There isn't really anything special about these whiskeys, but they're not bad. The blend is strong and has a bite.

Top shelf: 10th Mountain Bourbon, Jefferson's Ocean Aged at Sea Bourbon, and Axe and the Oak Colorado Mountain Bourbon Whiskey. These three stood out as exceptional, with Axe and the Oak really surpassing the other two as the best of the three. This is the only one I'll mention flavor notes for, because the oak flavor in this bourbon is terrific. I went out looking for a bottle locally today and was unable to find one, so I'll be ordering one either from Flaviar or direct from the distillery. And if we ever find ourselves in the vicinity of Colorado Springs, you can bet we'll be making a stop at the Axe and the Oak Whiskey House.
