The total eclipse of Rum.

The story of Mount Gay Rum begins in the year 1703, on the Caribbean island of Barbados, when John Sober (seriously...), inherited a distillery, and invited Sir John Gay to help manage it. Sir John Gay jumped at the opportunity to give the Barbadians something special. He refined the production process and began producing noticeably superior product that has survived to this day. Mount Gay is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, Rum brands in the World.

Mount Gay Eclipse is the measure used by Master Distiller Allen Smith to judge all other Mount Gay products. This is surely a testament to its greatness. It was named after the "double phenomenon" that took place when a solar eclipse occurred at the same time as Halley’s comet passed earth in 1910. The flavors capture its island home, with a thick sweetness and rich fruity tang throughout. It rounds off well with a mouth watering spicy kick.

A little bit of etymology; nobody really knows where the word Rum comes from. The most popular suggestions are Rum (the Romani word for 'potent'), Rumbullion (an uproar), Saccharum (sugar in Latin), and Rummer (a Dutch drinking glass).
It is often misunderstood that the little red star on the image of the island on Mount Gay Rum's original bottle represents the location of the distilleries, but in fact, it symbolizes the capital of Barbados, Bridgetown. The distilleries are actually in the northern part of the island.
Rum is why we measure alcohol proof. To make sure Rum wasn’t watered down, it had to be ‘proven’ by soaking gunpowder with it. If it was ‘overproof’ (higher than 57.15 % vol.), then the gunpowder would ignite, but if it wouldn’t, it was ‘underproof.’
Rum (usually) comes from molasses, the sweet and syrupy residue of refining sugarcane into sugar. Molasses is over 50% sugar, but it also contains significant amounts of minerals and other trace elements, contributing to the final flavor.
Rum used to be accepted as a form of currency in Europe and Australia, a practice we should probably bring back into fashion.
If the center of our galaxy had a signature scent, it would be Rum. Yup, astronomers studying a giant cloud in the Milky Way found a substance called ethyl formate, a chemical that smells suspiciously like Rum.
