Destileria Herencia de Sanchez is located in the tiny mountain town of Candelaria Yegole, Oaxaca, Mexico. Fewer than 200 people inhabit the rural, isolated community, which is several hours from Oaxaca City via twisting roads that skirt rock cliffs and steep landslides that washout during the rainy season.
The palenque (distillery) is run by Romulo Sanchez Parada, who learned to make Mezcal from his father. Romulo was raised in and around Mezcal production and worked in the palenque until age 20. He lived and worked for a few years in North Carolina while in his 20s before returning to Oaxaca in 2003.
Upon returning, he inherited the family Mezcal business and began bottling his Mezcal under the brand names Herencia de Sanchez and Rey Campero. Both of these brands are produced by Romulo at his palenque and both are made with the same traditional techniques and practices that have been used in Mezcal production for generations. Each batch is handcrafted using both wild and cultivated agaves that are harvested from the steep mountain slopes that surround the Palenque.
