All about Brugal

Brugal 1888 was a big departure from the traditional styles of the times in the 19th century. What sets this distinctive Rum apart from the rest is firstly, the method of distillation. Brugal removes many of the heavy alcohols than other Rums, resulting in a cleaner, dryer Spirit, less sweet than most.

Another distinctive quality is that every drop of Brugal is cask-aged, like a single malt Whisky. Distilled from fermented molasses, 1888 is a blend of Rums aged from 5 to 14 years in American white oak casks, and finish matured in first-fill Sherry oak casks.

Every Brugal Rum is a pure, handcrafted masterpiece, meticulously distilled using a recipe passed down through generations. The company weaves together different cask types and char/toast conditions so that their Master Blenders or Maestro & Maestra Roneros have sufficient marques to work with.

All about Brugal distillery

Brugal is one of several Rum producers based in the Dominican Republic, and the company was founded 1888, by Don Andres Brugal Montaner, but it wasn’t until 1920 that it produced the first aged Rum.

The modern production facilities at their Puerta Plata facility, built in 1986 ensure that the company can keep up with demand for what is now one of the biggest Rum brands in the world, particularly in Spain.

Rum production is via its highly efficient multi-column continuous distillation process, which results in a distillate that is by its own admission entirely neutral in character, hence the process relies entirely on the Spirit spending time in oak to develop character.

A few years ago, the company had a barrel issue which resulted in a batch of Rum displaying a degree of ‘funk’ that wasn’t particularly pleasant.

Fortunately, the brand's owners (Edrington) were able to step in and assist with its satisfactory resolution.
