Tasting notes, drinking recommendations, comparisons with other premium tequilas, we’ve got it all! By the end, you’ll know exactly why this tequila has become such a modern classic.

A Quick Look at Our Espolòn Tequila Review

Before we get into the full review, let’s take a quick look at what makes Espolòn Tequila one of the most special brands of our time.

  • Classification: 100% blue Weber agave tequila (Blanco, Reposado, Añejo, and Cristalino varieties are available)

  • Tasting Notes: Bright citrus, roasted agave, tropical fruit, peppery spice, and subtle vanilla

  • Distillery: Destiladora San Nicolás (Jalisco, Mexico)

  • Proof: 80 proof (40% ABV)

  • Pros: Authentic 100% agave, good for cocktails and sipping neat, great value for premium quality, a bright and complex flavor profile.

  • Cons: Intensity of flavors might overwhelm light mixers, may be too peppery for those who prefer softer tequilas.

What Is Espolòn Tequila?

Espolòn Tequila started in the Highlands of Jalisco, a fitting metaphor for how the founder, Cirilo Oropeza, aimed to take the world of tequila to new heights with his brand. This distillery served as a workshop where the brand mixed art and science to craft a unique vision for Espolòn.

Using only 100% blue Weber agave, it crafted Espolòn in small batches, slow-cooking the piñas in traditional brick ovens before extracting the sweet agave juice.

The result was a tequila that embodied the spirit of Mexican folklore from the inside out. Espolòn Tequila Blanco bears a fresh and crisp taste, whereas Reposado is more suited for those craving warm oaky undertones. Añejo and Cristalino are perfect for those who want more rich caramelized depth in their drinks.

And let’s not forget the artistic bottle design that’s as iconic as its flavor! These labels take inspiration from Mexican folklore and the vibrant Día de los Muertos tradition. You’ll find stunning skeleton characters celebrating life and history in each bottle.

What Is the Alcohol Content of Espolòn Tequila?

Espolòn Tequila is 40% ABV (80 proof).

Flavor Review: What Does Espolòn Tequila Taste Like?

If you take a sip of Espolòn Blanco, it will open with bright citrus, like fresh lime zest and grapefruit. The sweet, earthy flavor of roasted agave balances this brightness before tropical fruit and pepper take their place. The finish is clean with lingering herbal and mineral notes.

The Reposado ages for about six months in American oak barrels, and it has a deeper character of vanilla and butterscotch alongside gentle baking spices.

The Añejo ages up to a year and has more rounded sweetness, with caramel, cocoa, and dried fruit emerging alongside oak spice. The same goes for the Cristalino. Expect caramelized agave, honey, and toffee in every sip.

How Should You Drink Espolòn Tequila?

There are various ways you can drink Espolòn Tequila, but here are some of our favorites:

  • Use Blanco in cocktails that are on the fresher side, such as Margaritas, Palomas, or Tequila Sours.

  • Reposado works better in deeper and more spirited drinks like the Tequila Old Fashioned. You can also sip it neat to enjoy its oak-enhanced depth.

  • Añejo and Cristalino are best appreciated neat or with a single large ice cube.

When pairing with food, we recommend trying Espolòn Tequila with ceviche, grilled shrimp tacos, or citrus-marinated chicken. You’ll be serving this drink at room temperature for sipping, slightly chilled for shots, or over ice for a slow, intentional experience.

Is Espolòn Good Tequila?

Absolutely. Espolòn Tequila is high quality and priced just right, so you can enjoy top-shelf flavor without emptying your wallet. The flavors are beautifully layered yet light, bursting with authenticity and a vibrant tribute to Mexican heritage that makes every sip a celebration.

Espolòn Tequila VS. Patron Tequila?

Espolòn Tequila and Patron Tequila are both solid choices for high-quality drinks, but you’ll find a stronger and more peppery flavor profile in the former.

The latter has more of a sweeter approach. Espolòn is also more on the affordable side for creative cocktails, whereas Patron is better for sipping.

Is Espolòn Tequila a Good Gift?

Espolòn Tequila is an all-time favorite of ours to gift to friends, family, and colleagues. The label is eye-catching as it is, but it’s the production method using 100% blue Weber agave that gives this bottle instant credibility with tequila lovers.
