Irish Whiskey in a Rum Cask.

Jack Teeling founded the Teeling Whiskey Company in 2012, with a mission to challenge the norm by crafting Irish Whiskey with more depth of personality and character than the current mass-market options, and to become Ireland's leading independent Irish Whiskey producer. Jack Teeling comes from a family with a long tradition associated with Irish Whiskey. Take for example the Cooley Distillery, which was founded by John Teeling, and Walter Teeling in 1782 who set up a distillery on Marrowbone Lane in Dublin.

Teeling Small Batch Whiskey is Teeling's attempt to create the most interesting Blended Irish Whiskey. Have they succeeded? The Small Batch is a blend of malt and grain Whiskey, specifically 35% malt and 65% grain, which means it's quite high in malt content (good!). It's bottled without an age statement, however we've found out that they use Whiskeys aged from 4 to 7 years. What makes it extra interesting is a further 6 months of maturation in ex-Flor de Cana Rum casks, which imparts sweet molasses flavors and notes, yet, remains Irish in the core. Fantastic? Oh yes. Teeling is making great progress towards reigniting the craving for Irish Whiskey Worldwide. We applaud.

Andrew
Andrew,
Delicious! Definitely a new favorite

Célia
Célia,
Very smooth finish, with vanilla oak notes. Great on it's own, or on the rocks. Quite possibly my new favorite.

guest
guest,
Nose was pleasant apple with a some malty notes. Palate had a lot of apple with a smooth, chocolatety mouth feel. Finish had a little bit of spice. Nice, but I had this along with Green Spot and Red Breast, which I thought were better.

Erik
Erik,
If I can find it I’ll buy it.

J.
J.,
Very smooth and a little on the sweet side. An easy sipper, but for those looking for a smoky, peaty scotch experience.

Michael
Michael,
Smooth with a sweet vanilla taste and a hint of spice

Richard
Richard,
Liked this very much.

James
James,
It’s too sweet and does not have the bite that I usually like. It’s interesting and different with the rum cask finish.

James
James,
This is such a smooth dram. Very subtle spice with a wonderful sweet malty vanilla taste. And a subtle apple aromatic. My go to way to finish my night.

Frank
Frank,
Nice hint of creaminess. Surprisingly good for the price.

Tad
Tad,
Predictable and pleasant. The best moderately price Irish.

Jakub
Jakub,
Smell and taste after apples. Slightly spicy in the mouth, but overall sweet and apart from the little spiciness smooth. Only tasted

Anthony
Anthony,
I can say that I now prefer this over both Proper #12 and Jameson

Matthew
Matthew,
I did not like it very much, too sweet and not very smooth

Joel
Joel,
So far I have only had a couple of drams from the bottle. Not one that continues to call my name. I will not say I don't like it, but I will say I don't love it. I am a fan of Jameson and I think it's better. I'm probably not the best at rating things with the notes and smells and such that you would like. Just an average guy that says it ok, good, or great...

Joe
Joe,
Appropriate level of smokiness

Joe
Joe,
Nice deep flavor and the right amount of smokiness

Matt
Matt,
Delicate and very smooth Very subtle Irish whiskey. Light honey flavours.

Robin
Robin,
Really like this Scottish find. It is not overpowering, but is full of flavor. I'm new to really "reviewing" and whiskey verbage, but i know what i like. I like this whiskey. It doesn't leave you gasping. It goes well on ice...almost prefer it more on the rocks.

Ira
Ira,
Mellow and smoother. Very good both for mixing cocktails or for sipping.

Greg
Greg,
Great new Irish whiskey, definitely takes notes from the bourbon makers as well as the scotch makers, a young spirit but certainly worth the money.

Scott
Scott,
This was very smooth enjoyed it in Irish Coffee

Tami
Tami,
Relaxing. Pensive. Zen-like.

Christopher
Christopher,
Enjoyed it on ice. Great for the price.

Brad
Brad,
The rum finish definitely comes through - not subtly - and it's worth experiencing for the price. That said, it's not to my taste. It's probably not to most peoples taste. But you really should try it to find out because it's pretty cheap and it's definitely not bad.

Terry
Terry,
It's okay. The initial taste is very peppery. It gets better with some ice. It also has an odd fishy smell. It doesn't really affect the taste, but it's odd.

Mary
Mary,
Light, well balanced. Not your typical Irish whiskey.

Jeff
Jeff,
Needs to be served with lots of ice to break up the overtones.

Scott
Scott,
A tad too sweet for my tastes. Probably use it with a mixer or soda.

Joe
Joe,
Rum is most prominent. Some hints of barley. Bubblegum and enriched dough. As always, a good mouthfeel.

guest
guest,
Smells better than it tastes. Like a sharp, slightly spicy candied apple.

Alex
Alex,
Starts off spicy but then mellows to a perfect smooth taste that leaves a flavoring in the tongue that makes you go back for more.

Tyler
Tyler,
Honey and fruit salad on the nose; cocoa, coffee, cream, rich nuttiness on the palate. Long finish for an Irish whisky.

Justin
Justin,
We really enjoyed this bottle. It’s smooth and fragrant with a sweet finish. It goes down easy!

Christopher
Christopher,
Delicious Whiskey....the vanilla really gives it a special taste.

Raymond
Raymond,
I love it. I don't use or understand those fancy terms others use (spicy, oak, etc.) I just think it has great taste, with an afterglow of Irish whiskey.

Ryan
Ryan,
Smooth

David
David,
Smooth, sweet, slightly spicy and malty. Lots going on here with the added time in rum casks. Nice long finish. Will buy again.

Andy
Andy,
Maybe something others enjoy, but not the flavors I personally like. A little too much roasted chocolatey banana going on. Would probably be great in coffee or cocoa.

Gabriel
Gabriel,
Really enjoyed! Nose: Light oak, floral Palate: Light, mixed berry tea, buttery, shortbread biscuit

Conor
Conor,
Toffee and butterscotch with a fresh spring breeze. Walnuts and a hint of shortbread. A little basic, but perfect for a hot toddy

Michael
Michael,
Good Irish dram, but the finish does not last long. There is a spicy kick in the beginning but it doesn't develop any further. The taste that you get is not that great though. This one will get you drunk in a minute if you don't pay attention. I had hoped that this one would be better than Jameson.

Danny
Danny,
Compared this with Bushmills Black Bush. Not much on the nose ut sweet, rounded, slightly spicy taste. Feels like it would be a good dram by the fire around Christmas.

David
David,
Good and flavorful, although I am not a fan of Irish Whiskey, but certainly one if the best I have had in this price range.

Jordan
Jordan,
Great sweet rum finish. Mild apple, smoke and spice

Leanne
Leanne,
I was really hoping for better. I saw this featured on an episode of Night cap, Flaviar virtual tasting on you tube. It smelled delicious and the look in the glass was nice. The taste was good but not great.

Judy
Judy,
I loved it when I had only tried Jameson up to that point. I've since upped my Irish Whiskey game, and now it's 'ok'. A good entry-level Irish

Taste profile of a much more expensive whiskey

I think it is now one of my favorite whiskeys. Very smooth and enjoyable.

George
George,
Instant favorite. Super smooth. Very easy to distinguish an apple background. Prefect level of sweet. A perfect sipper. Add ice for a summer drink.

scott
scott,
I first found Teeling on a trip to Ireland. I visited the distillery and fell in love with their whisky. Very smooth, easy to drink at a great price point. Have not had a bad Teeling yet.

guest
guest,
Might have left my bottle a little too long but I found it a bit bland for my my taste. A solid kick with good mouth feel but aftertaste is not as great.

Susanna
Susanna,
This Bottle was a typical whiskey, there was nothing Especial in it.

Matthew
Matthew,
Very tasty...sharp irish whiskey.

Christopher
Christopher,
Pretty good at the price point but would rather spend a bit more for Redbreast or Green spot.

Josh

Has a fruity smell and taste from the rum barrel. A nice flavor which is smooth and light. Enjoyed it over ice.

Leo
Leo,
Surprisingly bright and smooth but has a personality. I like it a lot.

Craig
Craig,
Pretty good version, light and smooth. Not too special, but good. Wife thought it tasted like alcohol - not a fan.

Matthew
Matthew,
A little harsher than I expected, considering it's aged in rum casks, but it smoothed out well. A couple of ice cubes really opened up the subtler flavors.

Kent
Kent,
Solid. Smooth and enjoyable. Excellent for the price.

Anna
Anna,
Beautifully balanced and smooth, though maybe a touch too sugary.

Bhaumik
Bhaumik,
Since visiting the Teeling factory in Dublin I have been in love with this brand. I have probably gone through every bottle they have released. I’d say this is a nice staple for the cabinet but by no means their best. Just an easy drinking whiskey that you can enjoy if you don’t want to fork out for the brabazon, stout cask or my favourite single cask bottle pulled at the factory straight from the cask and signed by John Teeling himself

Barry
Barry,
It’s the best perfect balance tasting Whiskey.

Michael
Michael,
excellent!

Matthew
Matthew,
Color is a light amber. Nose is grassy, not very sweet, with notes of vanilla and very subtle fruit notes. First sip is mellow and yet has a little bite at the same time. Notes of fresh grass again shine, with a nice slightly oily mouthfeel. The flavors blend into a tight mesh, starting with an every so slightly sweet and creamy malty note, then transitioning to grassy smoothness washed in baking spices that linger all the way through the finish, which is nice and long, staying with you for an extended period. Overall this is an excellent Whiskey. While the individual notes are a little hard to pick out, the overall flavor profile is greater than the sum of the parts.

Joe
Joe,
Nose: Cut grass and orange blossom. Allspice, hints of vanilla, apple pie and blackberries. Palate: Spiced, rich palate with rose petal jelly and lemon curd. Creamy vanilla, hints of dried herbs and cinnamon. Finish: Floral, herbal finish. Caramel on the tail. Overall: A deliciously creamy, spicy and rich Irish blend.

Sophian
Sophian,
Had high hopes and expectations for this, but it came across as young and brash with that young make astringency (think nail polish remover). Gave it time to breathe. Gave it several more chances. Just doesn't do it for me. On the positive side, it had a clear clean crisp taste of an Irish whiskey. Try a 10-ml sip.

John
John,
A nice step between a Jameson and a Redbreast, this is an everyday whiskey with a smooth sweet finish.

guest
guest,
Excellent choice, not incredibly uncommon, but definitely worth the cost.

Jason
Jason,
Love it

Great nose and a bouquet of flavor for such a clean mouthfeel. An absolute pleasure neat, and a drop of water really opens up the notes. An exceptional whiskey from a distillery that is doing great things.

A delightful and affordable scotch. Light and airy, with a subtle sweet finish.

Robert

I actually liked sipping this neat. I certainly agree with the tasting notes on this one, especially the apple. I bought this for Irish coffee for St. Patrick’s Day. Tested it out with a cup of coffee. Wise choice.

Loved it, my new go to Irish Whiskey!

Bradley
Bradley,
Top two favorite Irish whiskeys. Smooth with a touch of sweetness and the rum cask finish puts it over the edge.

David
David,
Surprising Irish Whiskey - flavorful & smooth. It's like what Jameson would taste like if they didn't spend so much time messing it up. I'll be buying this again, and soon.

CJ
CJ,
Solid everyday drinker with sweet finish.

Mark
Mark,
Sweeter. Some Lillie on the front. More florals on the finish

Tim
Tim,
A damn fine Irish. Definitely a step above your basic Jameson or Tullamore DEW. The extra finishing in the rum casks shines through with a sweetness that accompanies but doesn’t steal the spot light.

Aaron
Aaron,
Love Teeling -- their other whiskies are even better, but hard to find outside of Ireland.

Scott
Scott,
Wow. Really into Teeling's whiskeys. This one is fantastic. Lots of apple/fruit to taste.

Edward
Edward,
A smidge at first, nice finish

John
John,
A great whiskey that can be sipped or mixed to equal delight. The rum finish makes it especially smooth. My go to "low cost" whiskey, when I am looking for something better than a Jameson but not looking to break the piggy bank.

Ken

Apple pie in a glass of whiskey. The combination of flavors and low cost makes this a staple in my whiskey bar.

A very smooth sip with a great mouthfeel and just a bit of burn

A little to much alcoholic aftertaste for my taste but I can taste the hints of vanilla and caramel from the rum. Its nice but there are better ones.

My favorite Irish whiskey. You don't have to think about it--you just drink.

Marcus
Marcus,
Nice smooth and a little fruity.

Gary
Gary,
I find most Irish Whiskey to be a bit harsh and expect that. This bottle aged in rum casks is a very pleasant sipping whiskey and most guests are quite pleased with the flavor.

Timothy
Timothy,
Delicious - my wife loves that it’s sweet and the spice doesn’t knock ur socks off at the finish. Very enjoyable.

Erik
Erik,
Great Irish Whisky but I don’t think it is complex enough for my taste.

Deirdre
Deirdre,
The notes added by the rum cask make this a smooth drink. I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy this, but I think the non-chill filtered process makes for a robust flavor.

Sean

Nice...a great first whiskey. This is coming from a confirmed bourbon fan.

Christopher

Smooth and a little spicy. A medium finish. Tastes fantastic in an Irish Coffee.

John
John,
At first tasting, I wasn't a huge fan (I was tasting several other whiskeys and I didn't think it could match up well against the other)...After a second revisit, I warmed up to it. Overall a smooth taste and smooth finish. Light taste, nothing overwhelming. Definitely a good, casual whiskey.

Craig
Craig,
We didn't intend to drink more than half the bottle, but it went down so, so, so easy...and so we did. Super-smooth on the front, with just a little bite on the back, this is a VERY drinkable whiskey.

Chris
Chris,
This Irish whisky is incredibly smooth. It’s full of very pleasant flavors. I find them to be just sweet enough to make this a great everyday go to drink. It’s not as good as my favorite scotch’s, but very close. For the price it’s definitely worth trying and it’s a keeper in my cabinet.

Thomas
Thomas,
Love this whiskey! It's a nice alternative to my Scotch obsession.

Bruce

An absolute favorite of mine. This is a perfectly smooth drink to pair with a conversation amongst family and friends. It is gentle enough that everyone will enjoy it though it has a wonderful set of flavors to be appreciated by those who will.

Charles
Charles,
Outstanding. Very smooth and an enjoyable easy drinking dram. I would have given it a 10 but it would need a bit more "kick" to it, but then it would not be as smooth.
