Melbourne is famous for its insane weather, where all four seasons present themselves in one day like it’s a demo. But while such changes may be obnoxious to people, they’re perfect for maturing booze. David Vitale, Melbourne native, established the Starward Distillery in 2007. He sources his barley from the nearby farms, while the maturation barrels come from vineyards in Victoria. Starward’s Whisky spends two years only in Red Wine barrels, but the crazy climate accelerates the process in "Melbourne years." Their Spirits are unique and unmistakably Aussie.
Starward Nova Malt Whisky is what a lush vision of Whisky can become. Australia, its hot climate and legendary Red Wines are carved in the DNA of this Spirit. The creators had carefully selected barrels that used to house locally made Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot. They made sure the barrels weren't charred. That way they preserved both the character of Wine and oak. The big idea behind this dram is honoring the tradition while not being trapped by it. Innovation and creativity enabled this red renegade to be as palatial as the big boys, despite its young age.
love the fruity flavor of this. nice balance all around.
Beautiful nose of fruit and wine notes, dark fruit, oak and a hint of vanilla dominate the palate, just the right amount of sweetness, underwhelming finish leaving a sour, metallic aftertaste in my mouth. Overall quite enjoyable, though.
Good aroma, but more astringent than I prefer.
Mixed reviews on the flavor and finish.
pretty surprised by how much i liked this. smooth, sweet, full of flavor at the same time!
Very mellow flavour, fruity yet delicately spiced.
Well worth a try
This is the first whisky I've tried from Australia; it's so much sweeter than any scotch I've tried. The sweetness and the red wine notes make an interesting combination that brings to mind dried dates.
After the sweetness and fruit there is a slightly spicy finish.
Definitely recommend for those who don't enjoy the more smoky and woody whiskies.
A very good medium whiskey, with sweet red wine smell from the bottle, but when you pour it into glass you get a nice whiskey scent. Initial taste is a bit rough with a lot of spice, but it fades quickly and after it a variety of fruit taste appears with a long and creamy finish.
Australian Whiskey Starward Nova Single Malt Elementary Matured For 2 Years In Red Wine Barrels. On the nose it reminds me of sherry or sweet fruit and a hint of honey. Tastes of honey, vanilla, jam, tannins dryness of the red wine and a nice coating of oil on the tongue. Lingers of the spice and the sweetness and has a fast burn but long linger it does not overwhelm. Very very balanced reminds me of Yamasaki adjacent......
Too rough for my taste.
Nice and crisp taste. Definitely going on my buy list
Initial nose is red wine, the dangerous grape juice-kind, but also that slight scent of a young whisky. Taste reminds me of a dry red, grapes, and red-fruit. It has a creamy texture with a long finish of toffee and a very slight burn.
My girlfriend didn't know she liked scotch until she tried this.
Nice to try, too much alcohol taste for me. Wouldn't buy a bottle.
Out there single malt! Definite wine cask fruit notes like I’ve seen from other whiskies aged in wine barrels weaved into a typical single malt body of vanilla, caramel and spice. The lack of age shows with a short finish and simpler flavor. Good stuff, but you can definitely get better wine influenced single malts for the money.
Surprisingly sweet but very smooth.
Not at all great - it tastes like Glenfiddich i.e. like drinking edible flowers. Apologies to my antipodean chums who clearly work hard on it, but I prefer proper Whiskey - with some clogs on it.
The first dram really didn’t impress me much - I corked it for a few months - but I recently decided to give it another try and really enjoyed it. Perhaps it was the lower expectations but this time I got lots of fruit up front and then a nice hit of spice towards the end. Dry finish and a decent lingering taste of banana. It was a fun dram
Smooth and fruity up front. Light and drinkable
10 - full bodied and rich with a dry, fruity finish. The red wine barrels add a ton of juicy fruit notes, all the while having a malty backbone. Really recommend this one if you’re particular to Speyside scotches.
I liked it a lot. I enjoyed the fruit notes that came with a kind of dry sharpness to it, but still smooth over all. Recognizably a good single malt but with it's own character.
Bit spicy. Takes away from smoothness. May be its short maturity time too. Overall not bad
Nice undertones but nothing really stood out.
I really enjoyed this. I remember that it was very smooth. I am writing this a month or so after finishing the bottle. It was my first Australian whiskey and I am very impressed
Very smooth texture and nice vanilla notes.
A pleasant surprise to be sure. It’s not something I’d find myself trying, but would definitely recommend and was the one in the tasting box I was lost excited about! The tropical fruity notes give it a pleasant, light profile that make it enjoyable for all palates, even for those who don’t normally drink whisky.
Tons of fruit. Very smooth and easy to sip.
Great flavor and very easy to drink. First time opening it i had a lot more than i intended too. I plan to keep this in stock at the home bar
Fruity nose, not so spicy finish. Not bad!
Dust and funk.
Nice, very fruity nose; did not care for the malty kick.
Drinks a lot like a sherried Highland but with notes of blackberry and black pepper. Finishes bone-dry and oaky. Not bad.
Unique strong fruit flavor definitely taste the wine.
Decent, my second favorite out of the tasting. I wouldn’t order a full bottle, but enjoyed trying it.
My favorite of the sampler I received. Very smooth taste and flavor. Love the fruity finish.
Very smooth, best neat. Similar to a Speyside scotch IMO.
Unique. I get strong notes of tropical fruit
smooth, oak finish, has a little fruity flavor
Very smooth and surprising
It was better than many others, but not my favorite. It did have big, bold flavor.
Wonderful taste and went down smooth.
Surprisingly strong. Complex flavour that I enjoy more with each sip.
I think this is an absolutely outstanding whisky! Very flavorful and smooth, I was attracted to the idea of it aging in wine barrels (even though I'm not huge on wine). It's definitely unique, and I got a second bottle about two months after I got my first!
Flavorful and smooth
Lots of fruit in the nose, strong sweet as it hits your tongue, followed by plenty of savory, woody, spicy flavor that alternates again with fruits, with a vanilla-sweet finish.
Love it! Very full bodied and flavorful. Mixes well with Sprite.
Sweet, strong, nice finish
Complex. Wine influence on the nose. Sweet, but not overly so. Easy drinker. Would definitely purchase again.
Very smooth and easy to drink.
Very easy to drink. I definitely enjoy the sweetness that the red wine lends it.
I’m a huge wine enthusiast, but that didn’t really sway my perceptions of this incredible whisky. The fruit on the nose and palate are perfect, with a beautifully dry and clean finish. I’m buying another bottle now!
Very SMOOTH. I enjoy the sweetness . Nice change of pace. This has become a staple bottle in my bar. My favorite pick as a club member so far.
At first I wasn't too keen on the smell but then I realized it was a wine smell and it kind of came together. Will definitely buy it again enjoy the teast.
I tried this bottle because it is something I would never buy on my own. Aging bourbon in a wine cask seems gimmicky, but it wasn't bad. Sweet, to be sure...and I could taste the wine presence. It is smooth but rather low octane for me at 80 proof, and went well with a cigar as I sat around the firepit. I won't order it again, but I've had much worse.
Smooth with solid flavor. I was expecting something very fruity but it was pleasantly mild and smooth. It’s a great summer whisky.
I prefer the double grain over this, which is also a better value.
The Nova is On the sweeter side. Plums and malt, maybe candied pineapple or bananas. But like you eaten a whole bag of them and are already tired of it..
Something about it makes me think of Chardonnay that’s gone flat, sat in a hot car, and lost its bubbles.
I got a vial of it in a tasting box and don’t think I’ll be ordering a bottle.
I don’t hate it. If you like mildly spicy, you’ll like this. I won’t buy it, but I also won’t turn it down like a bottle of Jack at a party 🎉
Though this was originally scotch when I bought it, I was pleasantly surprised when I tasted, slightly boozy with a bit of smoke to the nose, slight red wine taste
I got this bottle when I joined Flaviar almost three months ago. To be honest, I was not a big fan when I tried it the first time. However, I just tried this again today, and that air time in the bottle really did great things to this single malt.
I'm usually a bourbon and Irish Whiskey guy, so this one is unique for me. Lots of red berries and vanilla on the taste with some nice spices and a slight oaky dry finish.
Very good Whisky that has scotch elements. Great nose with oak and spice, a berry and vanilla taste and a tropical finish. Good stuff considering it’s only AGED 2YRS!!
I don’t like whiskey but I am trying to broaden my alcoholic horizons
complex and unique.
Very easy to drink. Vanilla flavor really comes through along with fruit and the red wine cask. Delicious!
A little different and mildly surprising aftertaste.
SWEET BUT WARM TASTING!! NOT BAD!!
Very smooth with a wine undertone. 10/10 would recommend to a whiskey taster.
Starward was quite a surprise, I mean, Australian Whisky and in Red Wine Barrels? So yummy! The nose is like candy at first, the taste is surprisingly easy to roll off the tongue without any burn and churn. Nice, not too sweet overall, extremely drinkable! My wife, who unabashedly loves Irish Whiskey took a liking to this one and I had to wrestle the bottle from her for a taste! Well done!
Not bad at all, just very different from any whiskey I've had. The grape must comes through a lot, a little rough at the finish, could age longer, relatively light bodied. Probably wouldn't keep it regularly on my shelf, but I will enjoy this bottle.
Very sweet but it’s pretty tasty
Fruity and easy to drink. Not my favorite but that’s definitely because I prefer bourbon.
Great red wine smell. Fruit and vanilla forward with a spicy kick at the end. Very good.
An awesome experience that went way too fast. Full taste without the bite.
Pleasantly surprised. Very smooth with nice notes of vanilla and red wine. Almost a cognac flavor but still maintains a solid whiskey character.
it really grew on me
At first it was slightly mild and nothing to write home about. Now I enjoy it with ice or as a highball. A little bit bland to just sip.
smells like black licorice, taste dark, burnt caramel, and fruit.
Great bottle for sipping or mixing with coke.
My first impression was that of the red wine, I can smell it and taste it. Smooth and a little fruity, with a nice bite at the end. Will buy again
Smooth. Taste the fruit with a hint of red wine. After taste has a mild burn. Looking to purchase again.
The bottle it self is poor quality. The sticker you have on there for the design are peeling off right out of the box. Disappointed in the design.
Nice taste, but kinda harsh. A couple of ice cubes makes it pleasant enough.
Sweet and smooth. Pairs great with a nice Dutch oven almond and pear cobbler! Nice little hint of the oak wine barrel. Overall recommendation as a mid shelf.
A very good blend. Okay for sipping, has good heat and has a hint of the wine the blend is aged in. Best for mixing than sipping.
Hints of pear or tropical fruit on Initial nose and taste followed by the flavors from the wine casks. Smooth. Not a long finish but enjoyable. Will by again.
Very good, I have brought 3 bottles back
from Australian holidays
Perhaps my least favorite bottle I've tried through flaviar. Did not play nicely with other cocktail flavors.
On the nose you catch hints of the red wine and some tropical fruit. In taste, you can definitely get the flavor of red wine and it is coupled with a spicy fruitiness. I haven't quite had this taste with a whiskey before and I greatly enjoyed it. Is a great daily sipper.
Easy to drink - good flavor similar to Cotswolds Founders Choice - but it lacks depth and finish. Not sure if I’ll buy again but definitely a nice whiskey to try if you’re new.
Smooth and flavorful. Finishes nicely.
A good whisky kick, with a red wine taste finish that smooths it out. For those that like flavor or those that are getting used to ‘neat’ or ‘on the rocks’ drinks I would firmly recommend.
Quite nice. Notes of honey and caramel. Blew away my expectations.
Beautiful color and a nice, spiced bite
My first thought when I took a sip was how smooth it was. Not at all harsh, like some whiskey. There’s a slight smokey taste but it’s not overwhelming.
I liked this scotch. Has a different kind of taste coming from the wine barrel....it is not Macallen, but it isn't Cutty Sark either....I think it is a top drawer drink.
It was a really interesting whiskey. A bit too spicy for my taste, but the red wine barrel gave it a really interesting fruity note.
Very surprised with how great this is! 10/10 would recommend.
Very nice sweet finish accompanied with smoothness. Even my wife enjoyed it.
Pleasantly surprised. Wasn't sure about a an Aussie whikey ,but the wine barrel aging is superb, very smooth and great flavor
Refreshing finish of vanilla and cinnamon. Very mellow and relaxing.
Love it. Very smooth. Sweet ending. Light fruit flavor. Great for sipping on the rocks.
Very nice I would get this again I love the taste and flavor of it.
was enjoyable, had a little too much bite, but flavor was good. for the price it was great.
This is a decent whisky. It is still really young and that shows, it has more bite than you would expect and that would undoubtedly improve with more age. What it lacks in smoothness it does try to make up for in the flavor, it is an interesting set of flavors (and no smoke).
A good whiskey with a wine cask nose.
Tasted like jet fuel. Not my speed.
Very tasty at a very good price. Good general drink.
Pretty fruity on the nose. I smelled more wine on the cork than the actual whiskey. I didn't get the red fruit on the palate. I actually thought it was dominated by the savory/sweet combo. I tasted caramel creme cow tails, vanilla, and banana. I didn't find it that oaky either. I didn't find this that complex, I actually thought the flavors were pretty dull and muted and it was a bit spicy without any smokiness which I thought was kind of strange. Fine to mix, not the best for sipping neat.
Not a $50 bottle. Wouldn't buy again.
I love the fruity aroma and flavor. Amazing
Spicy. Rough around the edges. Burns. Tasty. Oaky. Not smooth at all.
If you are a fan of red wine and trying to get into whiskey, this will be up your alley aged in red wine barrels very sweet floral smell very low heat but a lingering finish
Nice and strong, with red wine shining through.
Very nice neat and smoother than I expected. Will definitely add to my bar.
The genius thought of using wine barrels to age this single malt give it a very pleasant and sweet smell. The flavor falls short of the initial nose however, and I find that it's a smooth and enjoyable version of any number of other more inexpensive whiskeys.
I like it alot. It has a smooth little sweet flavor to it. Definitely something I wouldn't of just bought in the store but since I had a chance here to get it was well worth it.
This does not have any harsh flavors. The sweet red wine aftertaste was very surprising. Not your typical whiskey. Would order it again.
Smooth and delicious! A very pleasant surprise!
very drinkable, smooth, light with a sweet spicy finish
Love it. Some peat but not too much.
A fantastic spirit. Great aroma, smooth and silky feel. A pleasant surprise. I have not found it anywhere else, and will likely have to grab another bottle soon.
Not bad, but quite forgettable.
Smooth, with a great aroma and taste.
Surprisingly smooth with a pleasantly soft finish. Good value!
Aroma of red wine with a fruit taste. Very smooth. Great price for such an enjoyable bottle. Will hold a place on my shelf.
Great flavor profile.
Long legs savory spicy fruit with an undertone of oak
Great easy drinking whiskey. Highly recommend.
Very young and less complex than a true scotch. Great flavor however and wonderful aroma. This isn't a scotch for your first sip but a very good second drink where the nice flavor takes over and you don't notice the youngness and places where it lacks.
Yummy stuff! It has a unique flavor that I really enjoyed. Great single malt for the price. I will definitely buy again.
Loved this bottle, the flavor really opens up with a few drops of water or a small ice cube. would order again.
A nice interesting dram from down under. I get a lot of pear on the front end. Fruity with just a hint of spice. Very good for the price.
One of my more favorite single malts. I understand there are better tasting options for a lot more money. But for this price point, an excellent choice for me.
Good looking bottle. Not bad tasting but I wouldn't order it again.
Thick huggy legs. Smells like red wine
Hm. Nice intake. After take is spicy. Not harsh; spicy.
Very smooth with a rich flavor. Can taste the tannins and wood from the red wine casks. Reminiscent of a really good blended scotch.
A bit hot for me
It’s not bad but definitely not my favorite.
It is an outstanding, rich, Single Malt Whisky that has a spicy-sweet birth with notes of nuts, red wine, dried & tropical fruits; while a complex & creamy life adds notes of red fruits, strawberry, honey, cinnamon, fresh oak spice & red wine; that lead to a dry & oaky death with notes of marmalade, toffee, walnut & baking spices.
High notes of port and the Australian accent comes through heavily. A definite change from a single malt scotch but very good sipping whisky. Great color and interesting aging process.
Interesting whiskey with nice and unusual flavors. Good for sipping and good finish.
Oak comes in but not too strong. Not harsh on the tongue. Fruity aftertaste. Good but not great.
Fantastic drink. Good price.
Kind of fruity from the wine and not in a good way. It's drinkable, but that's about it.
A very nice and solid flavor with a hint of dryness-smooth with a small bite at the end. I would buy this again.
citrusy notes on the nose with a first taste of spice leading to a dry finish.
Me and my friends got this for game night, very good, little sweet,
Sweet on the nose and can definitely smell the red wine. Stays sweet with a bit of oak and light spiciness. Smooth finish. Could use a little more complexity, but overall I enjoyed it.
I really liked it. I like whisky on the sweater side. Very smooth. I could easily drink it daily. Maybe dangerous.
This was my introduction to Australian whiskey and I was impressed. Smooth, a little sweet, very easy drinking. Very bourbon like in it's taste profile.
Very smooth. Never think of aussies for whiskeys but it was very tasty
Sweet with a taste of oak and a very smooth finish.
Sweet start with a smooth finish. Taste like a decent quality Scotch. Would be happy to keep this one in my collection!
Super smooth. Very light wood/smoke and finishes sweet. Light on the palate. Zero awkward aftertastes. Lingering flavor. Only missing some complexity which would make it a ten
Great wood flavor all the way through. I love wood flavor. I think it’s just missing something small that would make it a 10.
Delicious. Mixed berries on the nose. Strawberry & pastry on the palate with a splash of oak. Slightly dry with more berries and cake on the finish.
Liked the falovor
Color is a light bronze. Nose is a mix of classic malt, bright red fruit, mild sweetness, and even more fruit. First sip is less sweet than the nose, with malt the dominant flavor. Mouthfeel is very pleasant, moderately viscous, with a mild drying tannin effect. Fruit flavors start to work out in the following sips, though less abundantly than the nose would lead on. Finish is a mix of red fruit and subtle citrus, though a little short. Overall, nothing outright wrong with it, but a little disappointing as the palate doesn't follow up on the bright, deep nose.
Really nice and smooth... good for everyday sipping
Sweet, a little oak and I can get the wine from the barrels they use. Not bad overall. 6.5
Not alot on the noise, but drinks very nice. Oak and fruit come through. Overall very good for the $40 price.
Mild oaky flavor, with a nice hint of fruit. Kind of tropical in a way, but not sweet.
There’s a weird dryness and it goes oddly flat for me. This isn’t working. Spiral says oak strongly normally I don’t mind oak but if it’s the oak it’s just not working for me.
Perhaps faint banana bread on the nose but very mild. Sweeter vanilla notes up front with fainter oak background and malty body. Pleasant spice lingers on the finish. Smooth sipper
This is not very forward on the nose. Maybe some hints of vanilla or banana. On the palate you can definitely appreciate the flavors influenced by the wine barrels. There are dark fruits, raisin, honey. Oak is prominent midway through all the way through the finish. Some spice lingers at the end. Very pleasant overall.
Nice amber/mahogany color. Oak, vanilla, fruit, and spice. Pretty smooth. Seems like an older whiskey.
Very smooth, a little sweetness.
Really liked it, awesome banana bread nose and fruit flavors; the red wine cask aging adds a nice sweet, oaky taste as well, and dry finish.
A lot of fruit on the nose, which is very pleasant. Fruit and spice upon tasting, with the oak permeating underneath. There is absolutely something tropical about the fruits, but I can't place which fruits. That tropical aspect makes this whiskey unique. Don't get me wrong, though, I would not classify this as a highly sweet whiskey. Overall, extremely smooth whiskey and very enjoyable to drink.
Really interesting. My first Australian whiskey. Very oaky and spicy, with a meaty undertone.
Love the dry red wine flaviar with the whiskey. Very solid.
Smooth taste, I like to use my drinking glass at an ½ to 1 ounce per serving for myself..
No rugged after taste an my limit was 4 glasses til I felt great!!
Smells sweet and like one too many bananas. Doesnt taste bad but wouldn't be my first choice. Really sweet and fruity. Spicy on the roof of my mouth instead of the back of the throat. Thought I tasted and smelled butter but that could be brain association with the marmalade notes.
This might be the worst whiskey Ive tried so far. I love whiskey but this was just rough..
This is actually quite tasty for a such young whiskey. As a ‘Speyside gal’, it fits in well with my preferred flavor profile. It has a lovely smell and is not in the least harsh. I’ll definitely get more...great taste for a great price!
Very Tasty! I thought this was going to be too fruity, but the taste has some nice complexity to it. A bottle that I thought would work its way to the back of the shelf has stayed front and center. Worth a go for sure!!!
There is a raw edge to the nose, but lots of tasting character and surprisingly smooth finish. If this is what they can do in 2 years, they are definitely a distiller to watch.
At first I was hesitant when I saw that the single malt whiskey was aged in wine casks, but as soon as I tried it I was pleasantly surprised that the wine notes were more aromatic and only noticeable in color. This modest two year aged whiskey has excellent notes of malt, gentle fruits and nut with a hint of vanilla. I raise my glass to this Australian brand and will recommend for life.
Wonderful flavors from start to finish. Also smooth - you can taste a bit of the fruit and oak flavors from the barrels which distinguishes it from other single malts.
I would order this again.
Normally not a fan of spicy but this combination really works.
This was a great whiskey. I have never tried an Australian whiskey let alone a single malt. The flavour was great with subtle fruit notes form the wine barrels. Only thing is it is a rad flat and could use a few more years in the barrels. Surprising how smooth it is for the age though.
Very smooth on the nose without being too fruity. Again smooth on the palate with just a hint of those wine barrels, followed by a clean finish.
I may be new to Whisky but I am not new to Australia. I can imagine myself sitting beside (not atop) Uluru staring up at the stars while sipping Starward. Or watching the Tuna toss at Pt Lincoln during the annual Tunafest and sharing a glass of Starward with a new found friend. This is just like most Australians - smooth and gentle on the soul. I look forward to sharing over Thanksgiving here in the States. G'day Mate!
Smooth and very favorable. I perfect blend.
Extremely smooth going in and going out. My favorite bottle as if today
Smooth smoky complexity with a really nice lingering finish. I'm no expert, but of all the whisky I've ever tasted, the best by far.
Very nice, everyday drinker. It has a bit of heat and then mellows our nicely. Not super complex. I’ve gone through my first bottle quickly!
A very excellent single malt whiskey. Had it been brewed in the Southern USA; it would be a perfect bourbon!
Nice and smooth with just a hint of fruitiness from the wine barrels without being overpowered by it like you get from some of the sherry barrel aged whiskies.
Even tho this bottle is extremely young, it has a deep flavor profile. Straight from the barrel
Fruity and complex without being overbearing. Smooth and easy drinking. You could get in trouble as this one goes down easy!
What a surprise that a 2 year old, single malt, is so smooth and smoky. I love it.
Didn't know what to expect with the wine Barrel aging but was pleasantly surprised. The barrel imparted a nice fruitiness to the Whiskey but did not overpower it. A very nice dram!!
Never had a red wine finish before. Easy drinking, great color, enjoyable for such a young whisky.
