In the 1990s, when the USA had just begun its love affair with the premium Bourbons, Brown-Forman Corporation took over a National History Landmark distillery in dreamy Versailles, Kentucky. This place that has been producing top spirits since 1812 has earned a spot in the Spirit-history books as it is The Place where whisky-making was perfected by including the implementation of sour mash into fermentation, nowadays a common practice. And it looks like it’s not done writing history - these days it is the place where the world’s finest Bourbons - courtesy of Master Distillers Chris Morris and Elizabeth McCall - are crafted.
Kentucky premiums must stick together and so the Woodford Reserve became the official Bourbon of the Kentucky Derby in 1999 and the official sponsor of the race in 2019. The commemorative of the 2023 race or “The greatest two minutes in Sports” is the Kentucky Derby 149 Limited Edition. Produced as an artisan Spirit in a small batch, this Bourbon has a mashbill of 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley that makes for a perfect mixture of sweetness and nuttiness, characteristic of all Woodford Reserve’s expressions. This year’s bottle comes with artwork by Jaime Corum which makes this bottle as good-looking as it is good-tasting.
