William Larue Weller decided to swap rye for wheat when he distilled Bourbon back in 1849, creating the first Wheated Bourbon. Great lad, right? The eponymous brand from Buffalo Trace celebrates him with an annual release of rare, uncut, and unfiltered Wheated Bourbon.
The 2019 Edition was distilled in the winter of 2007 and bottled at 128.0 Proof after it matured for 12.5 years in #4 charred new American oak (in Warehouse I). Kentucky corn and wheat and barley from North Dakota gave this gem a vanilla-forward character with additional caramel and pecan notes on the nose, and a long oak, cherry, and dark chocolate finish. 2019 William Larue Weller Kentucky Straight Bourbon won a Gold medal at the Los Angeles International Spirits Competition. Kinda want this one, right?
