Learn more >A classic Speyside Single Malt famous for its smoothness, but aged twenty-five years for a deep, rich burst of florals and fruit.
The Tomintoul Distillery was founded in 1964 by two successful Whisky trading companies — Hey & Macleod and W. & S. Strong. Initially, all the Spirit was intended to support premium blends. But demand was fierce, so they doubled capacity in 1974 when they issued their first Single Malt release. It has changed hands several times, but is now owned by Angus Dundee Distillers PLC, who also own the Glencadam Distillery. Although officially a Speyside, it actually sits on the River Avon in the northeastern hills of Cairngorms National Park.
Tomintoul has a reputation for smooth and mellow Single Malt. In fact, they are called "The Gentle Dram." Tomintoul 25 Year Old is true to their core Spirit with a velvety smoothness that is warm and soothing. But this classic Speysider is also darker and deeper than its younger siblings. And the aroma bursts out of the bottle with an effervescent bouquet of florals and bright fruits. Is it possible to be both gentle and exciting at the same time? The evidence of Tomintoul 25 Year Old suggests that the answer is an unequivocal "yes."
Smartass Corner:
In 2009 Tomintoul Distillery set a world record for producing the largest single bottle of Whisky — 105.3 liters of fourteen year-old Tomintoul Single Malt at 46% ABV. It’s about five feet tall and weighs nearly 400 pounds. It was sold at auction in 2019 for £15,000 (~$19,000). That’s the equivalent of 150 standard bottles at $125 each. We do not know if the new owner popped the cork for a pour.
