What does an average 19-year-old do in their spare time? Not become an acclaimed independent US bottler, that's for sure! Karl Schoen founded The Perfect Fifth in 2019 in Miami, Florida, and despite his young age, soon achieved fame by uncovering and bottling rare Scotch casks.

The one in question here, The Perfect Fifth Aberlour 30 Year, is a superb (and unusual for the Sherry-focused distillery) ex-Bourbon barrel Speysider, a 1989 vintage bottled at 51,5% (103 proof) in 2020. The juice has elegance and surprising degree of weight, with a gentle smokiness in very old-fashioned Speyside style. An absolute classic and an unusually mature pick from the bottling prodigy.
