Whiskey Advent Calendar - DAY N°. 9

The Irishman The Harvest

750ml
40% ABV

The Irishman The Harvest stands as a beacon of innovation in the Irish craft distilling scene. Crafted with passion by Bernard Walsh, this remarkable blend combines 70% single malt and 30% single pot still spirits, matured in ex-bourbon casks to deliver a complex flavor profile that is both layered and inviting, with a hint of spice from the un-malted barley that distinguishes it from the crowd. Adorned with Gold Medals like jewels, The Irishman The Harvest is a multi-award-winning testament to the art of distillation and a must-have for connoisseurs seeking a dram that truly stands out.

The first blend from Walsh and one of the best with an earthy combination of Single Malt and Single Pot Still Spirits.

Walsh Whiskey set out to rediscover real Irish-style Whiskey as it was made 200 years ago. When Walsh Whiskey first started in 1999, they contracted their distilling to Bushmills. But their success has allowed them to build out their own distillery in Carlow — in the heart of Ireland’s southern farm country — where they make eight versions of The Irishman Whiskeys, six Writer’s Tears blends, and two varieties of Irish Cream Liqueur.

The Irishman The Harvest is the first blend created by Bernard Walsh, and it is still one of their best and one of the most unique coming out of the Irish craft distilling market. It is a blend of 70% Single Malt and 30% Single Pot Still Spirits aged in ex-Bourbon casks. This twist on a classic adds a very nice layered complexity and a bit of grain spice that makes this dram a stand-out. It is also a multi-award-winner with Gold Medals dripping off the bottle like honey.

Smartass Corner:
"Single Malt" is a distillation of 100% malted barley from a single distillery, "Single Pot Still" also comes from a single distillery, but the mash consists of a combination of malted and un-malted barley.

*The Irishman has recently changed their labels, and as the original labels are being phased out, there is still a chance that you might receive a bottle different than what is pictured. But rest assured, the liquid remains the same, regardless of the label.

Appearance / Color
Toasted Grain

Nose / Aroma / Smell
The aroma opens with baked stone fruits — apricot and peach — over a backdrop of new hay, vanilla, and a dash of cinnamon.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
The influence of Single Pot is noticed in the almost Rye-like spice note under warm notes of cocoa, rancio, umami, and caramel cream.

Finish
The finish is long and warm with an earthy butterscotch note.

Distinctive

Smoky, herbal notes beneath caramel scent. Nice bitterness and strong burn. Phew. Might also be good in a cocktail.

Most complex so far

Light straw color, heat on the nose with little aroma. Sweet/sour mash. Very layered and complex. Rating would be higher if I was more into this type of whisky.

This might not be for everyone, but there was nothing about it I didn't like. It punches way above its price and proof. I haven't bought it yet but when the month is over it will probably come to fruition.
The cocoa is prominent on the nose and palate. I picked up some banana as well. The mouth feel, and components of umami and rancio (i had to Google it but it does apply here) made this very complex for me but your experience may vary. Again, I was really impressed with everything this dram had to offer and feel there is incredible value at $42 retail. The fruit wasn't as pronounced as Jake seems to think, but that is part of the mystique and enjoyment for me.
I initially rated this as an 8.5. Increased it to a 9 as it breathed, and I've moved it to the top of my list slightly ahead of day 5. The single grain and single malt whiskeys are capable soldiers that might be bosses one day. Cheers!
