This is what Tequila tasted like a generation ago… and that’s a good thing.

Altena Distillery has been operated by the Camarena family since… well, forever. Their first distillery was destroyed during the Mexican Revolution, but they rebuilt in 1937 near the town of Arandas in the heart of Tequila country. They still do Tequila magic using old-school techniques with masonry ovens and an ancient tahona mill stone. Today, La Altena distillery is operated by grandson and master distiller Carlos Camarena and they only make the good stuff, including premium brands El Tesoro, Tapatio, and Ocho. Muchas gracias por todos amigos!

Tapatio Tequila Reposado is special stuff. All Tapatio Tequilas are fermented with a special strain of yeast that has been nurtured for over seventy-five years. And the 100% Weber Blue Agave is estate grown on-site. Even more… the agave piñas are slow roasted for four days, which is twice as along as most traditional producers. Distillation is small batch in copper alembic stills before being aged for six months. This is definitely an old-school Tequila from bottle to spirit.

Excellent sipping tequila. It’s very smooth and the earthy notes are a nice contrast to the (IMHO) overly sweet tequilas that seem to dominate the market
