Pleasantly surprised

When I saw American Single Malt, I was skeptical. This is a fine pour. It has the right balance of everything. The price tag makes it a great value. Thin and light in color. Classic, scotch like smell. Spice and warmth on the palate. Upfront sweetness, nice and toasty. It’s not listed in the notes, but I also get citrus. Really enjoyed 6.5/10. Price taken into account 7.5/10.

This is why I like the advent calendar

I've seen this one at the store but never really had the urge to pick it up, so I was interested in the sample.

Tasting this one kind of gave me the same feeling, the bottle was interesting, what was inside the bottle was just run of the mill for me. I like the story behind it, but my original notes were "just ok, it might grow on me" and I still feel like that.

This was a fun reveal on day 3 of the Hotel Flaviar Advent Calendar. My wife and I have previously enjoyed the Diamond Peak (Black Label) and currently have a single-barrel 94 proof (Yellow Label barrel select). What we love about this whiskey is the clean toasted barley flavor and a consistently excellent mouth feel. There's just something about these Stranahan whiskeys and the way they coat your mouth with their bright cereal flavor.

This Blue Peak (Blue Label) was enjoyable, and had a bit more spice than the single-barrel we currently have. Stranahan whiskeys seem to open up more than other brands once the bottle tastes some oxygen, so I am eager to revisit this sample at the end of the month!
