A Stunning Whisky Inspired by Gorillas, Volcanoes, and New Friendships.

Stauning, nestled on Denmark's West Coast, is a tranquil farm community where the art of Whisky-making was redefined in 2005 by nine friends with two small pot stills and an abandoned butchery. With a climate mirroring Scotland's Highlands rather than Copenhagen, Stauning was the perfect setting for their whisky adventure. Today, this passion project has transformed into a respected distillery offering 6 core editions, each meticulously crafted with Stauning’s own malted grain.

In the summer of 2023, Flaviar embarked on a creative journey with the Danish Whisky innovators, and one lucky Flaviarista from Rwanda won the sweepstakes! Together with Stauning’s artist, Thit Hansgaard, they crafted a stunning label inspired by Rwanda’s volcanoes and gorillas.

Stauning Heather Smoked Barley Danish Whisky is a masterpiece made from the local heather-dried barley. Double-distilled in direct-fired pot stills and matured for five years in fortified wine casks and a smoky Islay whisky quarter cask, it's nothing short of extraordinary. The flavor profile is a unique blend of raisins, thyme, lemon, honey, and cereals, with a subtle hint of smoke

This limited-edition small-batch Whisky is available only at Flaviar so make sure to get a taste of this liquid testament to the spirit of collaboration and the art of whisky-making!

Not my style and not my taste

Just don't like it. Leaves a different taste in my mouth that is not on the good side.

A nice sip

I’m not experienced enough (or in my mind snobby enough) to start talking about raisins and rainbows or whatever the fancy folks say. It smells good. I do sense what I would call on oily mouthfeel. Some nice complex flavors.

Un-elevated smoke

While this does have smoke, it is unrefined - almost an afterthought.

Smoke on the nose, smoke on the palate - but nothing else. It’s shallow - imagine a very thin puddle. The smoke is the surface of the puddle, and that’s about all there is to it.

I expected something with greater refinement and complexity, to be honest. There is no middle and end to it. No lasting note, which I find to be the element I quite enjoy in my favorite whiskeys.

As for mouthfeel - it has decent body to it with a mild oiliness. Very fitting for what it is.

In sum, the flavor profile is a movie trailer for a film that never came into existence. A preview that leaves you wanting something more, that you’ll never get. Was it worth the Black price point? I’d say yes, though know what you’re getting when you buy it and don’t expect anything other than a shallow smokiness.

Not as described…

Hints of citrus, honey, vanilla, raisins, with pleasant grainy and malty flavors.
Finish: Bittersweet chocolate, sweet nuts and raisins, caramel, and brown sugar, meet with final drifts of bonfire smoke.

Full disclosure, I do not enjoy peaty whisk(e)y. That said, I would not have ordered this bottle if anywhere in the description it mentioned peat. I know to stay away because, although many people love it, it’s not my thing. Flaviar, IMHO, I think you missed on this one and I would have saved my cash.

Wonderfully unique

This stuff knocked my socks off. I'm an experienced scotch drinker and like peaty and smoky flavors. This stuff was different, more herbal and campfire in quality, less medicinal. Very nice change of pace and I will be buying Stauning again.
