John Little of Smooth Ambler Spirits set out with his father-in-law to make something his adopted state of West Virginia would be proud of. In 2009 that dream became a reality when they opened up their distillery in the tiny town of Maxwellton — which sits in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains. They have a single, small batch still. But sales have done well and they are up to approximately 80 barrels per month produced across two shifts. In-house they produce two Whiskies, two Gins, a Rum, and a Vodka. The company was purchased by Pernod Ricard a few years ago, but John Little still runs the show.
Smooth Ambler Old Scout was a HUGE hit. But back when it started, Smooth Ambler was buying barrels of aged Spirit from MGP to supplement its inventory. Problem is, they didn’t buy enough, so they ran out of their most popular product. Fortunately they started laying down barrels of new-make Spirit at the same time, and those barrels are now fully aged for five years and ready to bring this winner back. Smooth Ambler Old Scout Straight Bourbon Whiskey is 49.5% ABV of tastiness without chill-filtration. The mash bill in 60% corn, 36% rye, 4% malted barley, and 100% ready for prime time sipping.
*Smooth Ambler has recently changed their labels, and as the original labels are being phased out, there is still a chance that you might receive a bottle different than what is pictured. But rest assured, the liquid remains the same, regardless of the label.
