A powerful Rye Irish Whiskey by Powers.

Dating back over 200 years, Powers is a notable Irish Whiskey brand featuring James Power, who owned a public house and had a secret hobby—distilling Whiskey on the side. As it turns out, his hobby was a hit, and before long, it made him more money than the pub. So James decided to establish and rename the company John Power & Son and relocated to a standalone distillery on John’s Lane in 1822. Now, Powers Irish Whiskey is distilled at the Midleton distillery, under the safe wing of Irish Distillers, a Spirit giant that gathered all the big guns such as John Power & Son, John Jameson & Son and Cork Distilleries Company Spirit. It encouraged them to join forces and ensure that Irish Spirit Legacy lives on!

Powers Irish Rye Whiskey is like a fine Wine, aged to perfection at the Midleton Distillery. Distilled thrice and made with 100% pure Irish rye, it’s the real deal, straight from the Emerald Isle. It is bottled at 43.2% ABV and boasts potent rye notes with a smoothness of a proper Irish Whiskey. And just like a true Irishman, it’s unfiltered and unapologetically authentic.

My favorite Rye.

So I just started experimenting with Rye Whiskeys about a year ago after deciding in my youth long ago that the ones generally available then were just too harsh. I have since discovered that modern Ryes have a lot of nuance and flavor, but they are still often harsh on throat and palette (I like my whiskey neat). This, maybe unsurprisingly given its Irish heritage, is anything but harsh. It has all the nice bready, grassy, and woody aspects of a Rye, but none of the harsh aftertaste typical of the genre. It has become my favorite Rye Whiskey and is also among my favorite whiskies all together. Highly recommended. And thank you Flaviar for having this available at a reasonable price; none of my state's liquor stores will stock it. Their loss, my gain.

Very good.

Like all Irish whiskeys I have tried, this is very smooth. I enjoy the ryes about as much as the bourbons, though I do not have lots of experience with spirits in general. For the price, I think this is a great value if rye appeals to you.

A Surprising Dram - In a Very Good Way

I won't lie, at first this seemed like a whiskey that didn't know if it wanted to be an Irish whiskey or a rye whiskey, and the conflict was an odd experience. However, once it opened up, I realized I was a fool. This is harmony, these are two delicious flavors working in unison, music in a glass. On the nose you get orchard fruits (pears, apples, etc.), hints of spices, cinnamon, vanilla and toasted oak. The flavor is excellent, as the wood comes through with more of that spice, carmel and the peppery goodness of rye. A very unique experience - well worth it.
