Port Ellen is a silent Islay distiller that operated between 1825 and 1983, mostly known for exquisite Single Malts. There are still barrels full of insanely precious Whisky, and each year a new sought-after, instantly-cult offering is released.
The 16th release is the oldest Port Ellen bottling thus far. A mix of refill American oak hogsheads and European oak butts was filled in 1978. When they bottled the treasured juice in 2016, it yielded only 2,940 bottles, all individually numbered.
Curious what it tastes like? The nose is refined, leathery, and smoky, while the palate offers a harmony of sweetness, seaside saltiness, and charcoal. It's a true collector's item, but since Port Ellen is known for gorgeous flavors, we wouldn't be able to keep it in a safe for too long.
