A very rich and well-crafted Coffee Liqueur made from Australian Vodka and fresh-roasted Ethiopian coffee beans.

Mr. Black Roasters & Distillers was founded by Phillip Moore and Tom Bake in 2013. Phillip was an experienced distiller making award-winning Vodka, Gin, and herbal Liqueurs at his Distillery Botanica in New South Wales, Australia. Tom was an unabashed coffee snob. When the two men got together they created the Mr. Black line of premium Coffee Liqueurs. The pair have taken the Down-Under by storm and are bringing their famous Spirit to the rest of the world.

Mr. Black Single Origin Ethiopia Coffee Liqueur is the natural extension of their line of cold-brew Coffee Liqueurs. They take their uncut Vodka and macerate fresh-roasted, single-sourced coffee beans from Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia. The Vodka is infused at room temperature. This ensures that less of the bitter waxes and oils don’t dissolve into the Spirit, leaving more of the rich fruity and hazelnut notes. It’s delicious neat, but we like it on the rocks. And try it as the base for a Coffee Old Fashioned.

Smartass Corner:
The image of the bird on the bottle is the Blue-breasted Bee-eater. Native of Ethiopia, it was found living in the shade-grown coffee plants.

Appearance / Color

Nose / Aroma / Smell

Better than the regular Mr. Bl...

Better than the regular Mr. Black. That said, I'm not sure I REALLY notice the difference when I mix in complex drinks, but with vodka or in Japanese whiskeys, this one really pulls through where the standard Mr. Black isn't quite the same.

Also, as a coffee industry pro of 7 years, I really appreciate this just by itself. I might be a snob, but I haven't found another coffee liqueur that I can just put on ice and like all by itself.

I gotta say I’m underwhelmed. I bought and gifted this one because of the beautiful bottle, but I don’t get the hype around this brand. We lined up this with the Mr Black original, Kraken black roast, and Kahlua for a tasting comparison. Kraken beat both Mr Black by a long shot.

Just like the regular Mr Black...

Just like the regular Mr Black, this is a super-delicious coffee liqueur. I don't think it is better or worse than the regular version, it is just... different. Regular Mr Black has a broad, smooth, coffee flavor, reminiscent of a good every-day coffee. The Ethiopian blend is sharper and punchier in a "french roast" direction, but doesn't have quite the breadth of flavor that the standard version does. Try them both, pick the one that's right for your drink of the moment.

I love specialty coffee. This ...

I love specialty coffee. This stuff is a step above any other coffee liqueur I’ve tried. You can really taste the gourmet coffee notes. It translates nicely into cocktails. It’s not subtle at all though, so it can easily take over a drink w/ other light flavors. Compliments whiskey nicely.
