A delicious sipping Rum with a rich, Whiskey-like flavor profile.
Rum production is THE primary industry on the island of Barbados — the eastern-most island in the Caribbean. Mount Gay is not only the oldest Rum Distillery on the island, it is documented to be the oldest Rum Distillery in the world with land title papers stretching all the way back to 1703. Technically, the Distillery is independent, but Rémy Cointreau is a majority shareholder of the facility and controls the Mount Gay brand — and they do a very good job leaving them alone to create their brand of Caribbean magic.
Mount Gay Black Barrel gets its name from the deeply-charred finishing casks. It’s a cross section of Mount Gay Rums aged between three and seven years with more than half of the Spirit dripping off double-pot stills and the rest coming from the column stills. All of the Rum was aged in American Whiskey barrels. After marrying, the Rum was finished in ex-Bourbon casks and bottled at 43% ABV. It really is a wonderful expression and a great Rum for Bourbon-Lovers in all the best ways.
Appearance / Color
Brilliant Amber
Nose / Aroma / Smell
The aroma is deep with notes of Rum-raisin cream, vanilla toffee from the Bourbon casks, allspice, and a hint of brown butter.
Flavor / Taste / Palate
On entry, the flavor of gingerbread was warming followed by more toffee and plenty of spices from cinnamon to cracked pepper.
Finish
The finish is long and well balanced between richness, sweet, and spice.
