A classic golden Rum from the Dominican Republic.

When you hear the name Matusalem, you can probably guess we ain’t talking about no new kid on the block. In the Old Testament, Matusalem would live up to be a 969-year-old and while Matusalem Rum hasn’t been around for 969 years as it was founded in 1872 in Santiago de Cuba by Benjamin and Eduardo Camp, the idea behind the name was – timelessness. The most sought-after Rum during Cuba’s Golden Age – you know, when all the artists wanted to be there, including Hemingway who even ended up living there – Matusalem never followed trends, but instead opted for the classics. Named the Cognac of Rums for using Solera ageing, today, Matusalem is bottled in the Dominican Republic as the family initially producing it went into exile after Castro gained control of the country.

Matusalem 10 Year Old Clásico is distilled from fermented molasses in the Dominican Republic. Its beautiful golden color comes from spending time in ex-Borubon barrels, although we don't know exactly how much time. The Solera ageing system means that selected aged Rums are married and aged, for an average of 10 years in this example. And voilà, here is your exceptionally soft, breezy, floral and sweet Clásico. You can savor it neat or it can be exactly what your next cocktail night needs.

This has an interesting contrast, in some ways. Its mouth feel is buttery and smooth, but it still seems to have a little bit of an alcohol bite to it despite only being 40%. Tried it with just ice at first, but I think my next venture is to put it in a Mai Tai or other cocktail. That might be where it shines.
